in the field sys$maintenance directory on lookin.
They are in 3 seperate sub directories :- .tape_1
                                          .tape_2

79.2COMMAND PROCEDURE for updating SYSMAINT ACCOUNTKERNEL::BLANDtoward 2000 ...Mon May 13 1991 06:25213
	This could be useful to those engineers in the field who are not
    aware of it.
    The following is the Release Notes for 43.COM (a command procedure for
    building/updating the SYSMAINT account).
    I first noticed it on VAXPAX RELEASE 42, where it was named V42.COM.

                      ***********************************
                      *                                 *
                      *   43.COM PROGRAM DESCRIPTION    *
                      *                                 *
                      ***********************************

 FUNCTION: [SYSMAINT] Diagnostic Update Tool

       This is a menu driven comfile that provides the engineer
       with a simple, efficient means of building and maintaining
       the [SYSMAINT] diagnostic account on all VAX CPU's.

 UPDATE PROCEDURE:

       This file will always be included near the beginning of
       VAXPAX Tape 1 and will always have the name that corresponds to
       the latest release (e.g. 43 for Release 43).

       Copy the file from the source tape into the [SYSMAINT] directory
       and run as per the following example:

                 $ MOUNT $1$MUA0: VAXPAX               (tape 1)
                 $ COPY $1$MUA0:43.COM []
                 $ @43

       The program will then verify the proper running environment
       (See Program Considerations below) before displaying the
       following option menu:

                    Enter "U" to Update the existing account!
                    Enter "A" to Addon to an existing account!
                    Enter "I" to Initialize a new account!
                    Enter "Q" to Query the Database!
                    Enter "V" for a brief Intro to 43.COM!
                    Enter "E" to Exit!

       The following is a general description of the program options
       and is what is seen when choosing the "V" option:

   1........INITIALIZE OPTION

     The Initialize option is best utilized during Install and works
     best if there are no diagnostics present. It is suggested to
     have a CONFIG.COM file built on the system to speed up Initialize.
     If there is no CONFIG.COM file present, this program will
     automatically establish the CPU and Memory Diagnostics. Option
     diagnostics will be prompted for by name. When the Diagnostic
     Account has been established, you will be instructed to load the
     required Vaxpax tapes...insure the correct tapes are loaded.

     If running under a true cluster environment, you will have the
     choice to place the diagnostics in SYS$SPECIFIC, SYS$COMMON, or
     BOTH Directories. Normally, under the cluster environment, the
     best choice is SYS$COMMON making the diagnostics accessible to
     other nodes on the cluster. When making this choice, the following
     files will remain in the specific directory.

                         DIAGBOOT.EXE  (contiguous)
                         E?SAA.EXE     (contiguous)
                         EVSAA.HLP
                         EVSBA.EXE
                         EVSBA.HLP

     The first 2 for STANDALONE BOOT capability.
     The latter 3 to support them.

     If the CPU Specific diagnostics are no longer supported,
     only the EVxxx Diagnostics to support the CPU and it's options will
     be loaded. You will be given information on which Vaxpax release
     last supported your specific type cpu at the beginning of the program.
     Retired diagnostics will be reported.

   2........UPDATE OPTION

     The Update option is used to update ALL diagnostics found in the
     [SYSMAINT] account that are presently supported by the latest
     Vaxpax release.

     Use Update to keep the diagnostic account current once the Initialize
     option has been run. Some accounts have an excess of diagnostics
     and should be cleaned out. Some accounts do not have the
     correct diagnostics. The average cluster of 4 CPU's with a total of
     16 options should have approximately 80 diagnostics. Any account
     having in excess of 100 diagnostics should be looked at closely and
     is a good candidate to clean out and Initialize.
     If the decision is to ""clean out"" the account prior to running this
     program, keep in mind that the non-supported diagnostics
     mentioned earlier should be saved if applicable.

     The Update option will update ALL diagnostics seen by the cluster.
     Once the account has been established, the average update time is
     approximately 15 minutes depending on the load device. Version
     numbers will reflect the originating release.

   3........ADDON OPTION

     The Addon option is used to determine the correct diagnostics needed
     to support any options added to the system.

     In the cluster environment, these diagnostics will be copied to
     sys$specific. These new diagnostics will remain in sys$specific until
     the next Update or unless you wish to copy them to sys$common manually.

     If a diagnostic has been retired, you will be notified.

   4........DATABASE OPTION

     The Database offered reflects only those options/diagnostics that are
     supported by the CURRENT Vaxpax release. By typing D1 or D2,
     you can instantly obtain a complete directory of each Vaxpax tape.

             Enter "D1" for the directory of Vaxpax tape 1.
             Enter "D2" for the directory of Vaxpax tape 2.
             Enter "D" for diagnostic in.....option out.
             Enter "O" for option in.....diagnostic out.
             Enter "R" to return to the program menu.
             Enter "E" to exit the program

     Entries are valid from ANY prompt. You can use CTRL/C to exit from
     the lengthy printout of a Vaxpax directory and return to the
     Database menu. The only way to exit the Database option is to enter
     "E" to Exit, or "R" to Return to the program menu.

   5........PROGRAM CONSIDERATIONS

     Prior to the start of the Update or Initialize function, the system
     disk is checked for sufficient disk space. Should there be
     insufficient disk space, you will be immediately notified of
     the amount of extra blocks needed to continue the program. The
     program will then exit. If the system disk is fragmented, you
     will be notified at the completion of the program. In both the
     above instances, the customer should be notified.

     This program will insure that both the Diagnostic Supervisor and
     DIAGBOOT.EXE are contiguous and in sys$specific. The only exception
     to this is if the Diagnostic Supervisor is no longer supported,
     in which case you will be given the last Vaxpax release to support
     the type of CPU in question.

     If 43.COM was previously run on the system, you will be
     notified of the run date and the number of diagnostics copied. This
     is to prevent duplicate runs. You will be given the option to
     exit or continue. Same day runs are ignored.

     This program will NOT run on any Version of VMS less than 4.0.

    Yep. This is something that I and a colleague do as an un-official, but
    useful, task. The intention is to have the latest diagnostics
    available, preferably at the time of release. We should currently have
    VAXPAX 44 (tape 1 & tape 2) but other things have prevented me from
    copying them. We are also able to copy diagnostics in advance, for
    example, if I required a new diagnostic that was available from VAXPAX
    45, I could copy that now. There is always the danger of getting a bad
    diagnostic when copying it prior to the final QA.
    If you would like to know more about where we get our diagnostics from,
    then please mail me as follows:- KERNEL::BLAND.
