We are extending the special allowances on VMS user licences for targeted

SIFT NO: 820

SUBJECT: CPU Upgrades/ Mandatory Returns

AUDIENCE: All Sales/ CAS

ORIGINATOR: Mike Barthram/ CPU Upgrades Merchandising

Many of the recent board upgrade programmes specify that the old CPU modules
must be returned, and their value was taken into account when the price of the
upgrade was calculated.

Failure to return these parts will result in an additional charge being made.

The process for Mandatory Returns is shown in the VAXupgrades Migration
Handbook, and defined in the CAS Policies and Procedures Manual.

Leaving these parts on site could result in them falling into the hands of
Brokers, System Integrators, and so on, and so future sales could be affected.

Recent specific programmes affected by the above are:

1. VAX 6200 to VAX 6300 upgrade special offer (now finished).

2. MicroVAX and VAX server 3500/3600 to MicroVAX and VAXserver 3800/3900
    upgrade special offer (now finished).

3. VAX 6200 and VAX 6300 to VAX 6000-400 Upgrade special offer.

Many other upgrade programmes require mandatory returns; please check your
copy of the VAXupgrades Migration Handbook for details.

heard mention of a major event planned for November this year.

"Competing in the 1990s - the Digital Advantage"
================================================

This SIFT provides additional information to encourage you to slot time in
your diaries now to attend one of the events in your region. Further
information and a detailed Agenda will follow in September.

Target Audience
---------------

All Sales, SWAS, Field Service personnel (all levels) who are in a position to
influence our customers.

Objectives
----------

To sell more successfully as a company, by providing Digital personnel with
the information and tools needed to help our customers to understand:

o the significance of IT to their business.
o the benefits of a distributed style of computing vs centralised approach.
o the Digital Advantage - the reasons why they should invest with us.

Benefits to you
---------------

The event will provide concise and practical information, presented in a
logical and direct manner so that you will be better able to

o convince your customers to invest in IT.
o show them why Digital is the natural choice.

This information is based on recent research, both internally with our selling
teams and externally with our customers, and will provide a framework to help
you differentiate Digital from the competition.

Professional sales tools along with a 'where to go for additional
information/help' will also be provided.

What do you need to do
----------------------

Nothing for now, except to review the following event schedule and pencil in
the appropriate date in your diary. The event will start at 9 am and go
through to 5 pm with lunch included. Please note, we are still finalising
some aspects of the schedule.

A firm schedule, along with a detailed Agenda, will be available when we
formally announce this event in September.

Expert Systems in Marketing & Sales, a One Day Seminar, 14th September 1989.
============================================================================

A three day conference aimed at Senior Managers and Executives involved in
Sales and Marketing, to be held in central London.

Although this is an external conference, the programme has been arranged in
conjunction with Digital, and includes four Digital speakers, plus a Digital
chairperson on Day 2. The conference is an excellent opportunity to promote
Digital to key decision makers as a leading edge supplier in this space, with
contributions not only from ourselves, but also from third parties, and major
industry speakers.

Special discounts of 15% and 20% are available for Digital customers attending
the conference who have been introduced by account teams.

For details of the conference agenda and how to book, see the Sales Notice
Board section (Option 0 Notice) of UK Field VTX.

ORIGINATOR: Mike Barthram/ CPU Upgrades Merchandising

"Pre-packed" VAX 6000 Upgrade mailings have been sent to all salespeople
this week via internal post for onward mailing to installed VAX 6000
customers.

Contact me via DECmail (Mike Barthram @RDL) if you haven't received your
copies.

I M P O R T A N T - prices currently on the system and in the price books
already include the special offer price reductions of 20%, 35%, or 46%,
and these prices will increase when the special offer closes on 28th
October.

In order to measure the effectiveness of this method of getting upgrade
information to customers, (i.e. they receive it from you, the salesforce,
rather than via a central impersonal mailshot), I have sponsored our Out-Bound
Telesales group to call a percentage of the salesforce over the next 2-3
weeks, and ask for feedback.

Please take the short time needed to answer these questions which will provide
me with the information I need for future mailshots.

        ORIGINATOR: Dick Clements/Sales Programmes

The Management Team for EDI '89 are seeking assistance from the field for our
participation in this exhibition which runs from October 31st to November 2nd
at the QEII Conference Centre, London.

In particular we are seeking the assistance of those people who would be able
to offer ONE DAY to assist in the management of tours around the stand for
guests. The theme of the stand is a rolling demonstration of the EDI process
from originator to recipient to fulfiller using the combined capabilities of
both Digital and six CSO's. This would be a pre-scripted tour with technical
people on hand to take any queries off-line.

No previous exposure to the EDI product set is needed as the tour will be
biased towards the business environment and the benefits to be derived from
an electronic transfer of data between organisations.

If you are able to offer such help, please contact Dick Clements on 7899-5777
(or @RDL) or Phil Crocker on 7899-5676 (or @RDL) as soon as possible.

Please also note that further to SIFT No 847 the nomination deadline for the
CEO briefing has been extended to 27th September.

Make sure you use the right cables with DECserver 300!

DECserver 300 provides hardware flow control signals DTR/DSR for controlling
terminals and printers.

DECserver 300 Software monitors DTR/DSR and uses with normal XON/XOFF for
flow control, detection of Paper out, and Fault conditions.

Please note that this feature will only work if the Device is directly
connected to the DECserver 300 using a BC16E-XX cable.

It will NOT work if the DECServer 300 is connected to device using DECConnect
cabling and MMJ's.

DECConnect MMJ's (H3113-A and H3113-B) do NOT pass these signals onto the
cable.

Solution today is to use 3rd Party product from MOD-TAP for those situations
where customers need to use the DTR/DSR detection feature of DECServer 300
with DECConnect.

Digital failed to gain BT approval for the DSH-32 on the MicroVAX 3100. The
DSH-32 provides an additional 8 async lines and synchronous connection to
X.25 and SNA. Thus all MicroVAX 3100 systems with the integral DSH-32 are
currently on hold.

This is a local UK problem. All other European PTT authorities have given
approval. Engineering is doing everything possible to solve the problem but
it could be December before we reach formal agreement with BT.

There are a number of actions under consideration to minimise the damage to
the UK business and these will be communicated to you once agreement has
hopefully been reached with manufacturing.

SUBJECT: Positioning Digital's Worldwide EDI Programme

AUDIENCE: All Sales/ SWAS

ORIGINATOR: Julian Kempster/ Product Marketing

On 10th October, Digital will make a worldwide EDI PROGRAMME announcement. It
describes a NEW worldwide software product which COMPLEMENTS the VAX/EDI
product currently on offer in the UK.

The worldwide product is initially targetted at companies requiring the
"EDIFACT" and "ANSI X12" EDI standards. By comparison, VAX/EDI provides
support for "UN-TDI" standard", and the "TRADANET" Value Added Network.

Digital's goal is to offer a single EDI product worldwide, by including
"UN-TDI", and "TRADANET" connect, in a later release of the worldwide product.
At the appropriate time, Digital will offer a migration path from VAX/EDI.

Until then, both the new product and VAX/EDI (UK) will be marketed in the UK.

Further details of the worldwide programme will be announced on 30th October.
This is targetted to coincide with the EDI '89 exhibition in London.

SIFT NO: 857

SUBJECT: Great News from DECdirect Software

AUDIENCE: All Sales/ SWAS/ CAS

ORIGINATOR: Ian Waring/ DECdirect Software

DECdirect Software has great pleasure in announcing a new style Software
Catalogue. Improved as a result of several surveys on software purchase
patterns and your feedback, the advantages over previous issues include:

* Coverage Up from 80 to 220 Software Products

* Lighter Down from over 200 to 136 pages

* Up to date Now a quarterly publication

* Prices Against each product; no separate price guide

* Indexed With a Table of Contents at the front, plus
                        indexes:

                        - By Product Part Number,
                        - By Old Price Guide Category Splits,
                        - By Product Name and Function Keywords

* Readability enhanced by adopting a magazine style, feature
                        articles and meaningful graphics

* Selling made easier by highlighting product benefits,
disk space requirements and upgrade paths

We are already working on the January edition, which will include several
more enhancements that we didn't get in this time around.

In order to conserve space and thus maintain a professional looking style, we
have rounded up prices with pence in them to the next higher pound value. This
only affects prices under 1,000. Customers will still be invoiced at the
correct figure, which will be the same (or less, up to the value of 90p) than
the prices quoted. The catalogue highlights this rounding in the 'How to
Order' section.

The ability to eliminate pence altogether is currently being investigated for
all price systems and we will implement this at the earliest opportunity.

As always, constructive criticism, likes/dislikes, underselling of
products(!), suggested customer references and general feedback are more
than welcome. All comments on these (or any aspect of DECdirect
Software's Service) should be addressed to Ian Waring @RDL. As always,
we're here to help.
