43.0. "So this is cost cutting!!" by KERNEL::PETTET (Norm Pettet CSC Basingstoke) Fri Jun 09 1989 11:02

    Greetings,

Last night, at the Crest, we heard MD talk about cutting costs
and expenses, well perhaps someone can explain WHY it takes new
materials to build Garry Marsh's when all it needs is to move the
    old one?.

    	Any comments?

Why did he incur the expense of the Crest Hotel, when there are
perfectly good conference rooms available in DEC buildings in
the vicinity ?? Today, he was at the HILTON, giving the same talk
to the people from Snamprogetti House.

Incidentally Norm, All the offices being moved are being rebuilt
with new materials, and the old stuff being thrown into skips for
disposal (at the company's expense, no doubt)

43.2book me into a pubKERNEL::PETTETNorm Pettet CSC BasingstokeWed Apr 25 1990 13:0413
ref Mike's memo from Paul Gillot concerning cost custting:-

It appears in the future training courses will start at 11:00
Monday mornings and we will be booked into "cheaper" hotels. Whilst
I agree with the recommended changes I feel the knife cuts both
ways!!. Does this mean managers will also be booked into cheaper
hotels? (and if not why not?) and more managerial meetings will
be held in digital's own facilities?

come on Mike don't be shy....

    Cheers...Norm
43.3Look after the pennies....KERNEL::ADAMSVenus on Remote ControlWed Apr 25 1990 16:0315

Not only should this apply within Customer Services at all levels,
but in other functions as well. After all, we all work for the same
company, and should all expect to be treated equally, in these
    matters.

Now I know that when "entertaining customers", certain standards
are essential, but even so, everyone should cut out UN-NECESSARY
    waste of the company's money.

I think the best reccomendation, that can be passed to ANY employee
within the company, is as follows,

"When incurring business expenses, consider whether you would spend
this money, if it had to come from your own pocket."

                                     NOTICE

Due to budget constraints, the following corporate policies are announced
regarding employees traveling on official business. The policies are effective
immediately.

TRANSPORTATION
Hitchhiking in lieu of commercial transportation is strictly encouraged.
Luminescent safety vests will be issued to all employees prior to their
departure on company business trips. Bus transportation will be used wherever
possible. Airline tickets will only be authorized for purchase in extreme
circumstances and the lowest fares will be used. If, for example, a meeting is
scheduled in Seattle, but a lower fare can be obtained by traveling to Detroit,
then travel to Detroit will be substituted for travel to Seattle.

LODGING
All employees are encouraged to stay with relatives or friends while on company
business. If weather permits, public areas such as parks and parking lots
should be used as temporary lodging. Bridges may provide shelter in periods of
inclement weather.

MEALS
Expenditures for meals will be limited to an absolute minimum. It should be
noted that certain grocery chains, such as General Nutrition Centers and Piggly
Wiggly stores often provide free samples of promotional items. Entire meals may
often be obtained in this manner. Travelers should also become familiar with
indigenous roots, berries and other protein sources available at their
destination. If a restaurant must be utilized, travelers should seek
establishments offering "all you can eat" salad bars. this will be especially
cost effective for employees traveling together, as a single plate can be used
to feed an entire group. Employees are also encouraged to bring their own food
while on company business.

ENTERTAINMENT
Entertainment while on travel is strictly discouraged. If such extravagances
are required on customer contacts, the customer should be encouraged to "pick up
the tab". Such action will save the company money and convince the customer
that we are concerned about spending money on providing a good product, not on
useless frivolities. The hospitality provided to customers who visit our
faciliis should also be tasteful, yet cost effective. In lieu of extravagant
dinners, a picnic bench will be placed in the parking lot next to the dumpster
and garden hose will be made available so that liquid refreshment can be
provided for our quests.

THE END.
