24.0. "ULTRIX/UNIX SEMINAR" by KERNEL::PETTET (Norm Pettet CSC Basingstoke) Thu Apr 06 1989 16:39

Greetings,

Alan Trevennor has kindly offered to do a seminar on ULTIX/UNIX
for CSG, can I ask you all to voice your opinions and/or comments on
this and who would be interested in attending such a seminar.

        Cheers...Norm

Subj:	Ultrix training

Norm,

Further to our conversation today about ULTRIX training. One of
my current projects is travelling to all the district offices delivering
The Ultrix Awareness Roadshow. This is a two or three hour presentation
which overviews the crucial importance of UNIX to the future of DEC, and
includes a very quick look at the technical aspects of ULTRIX. There is
a video of the top people in Digital talking about how critically important
UNIX is to us.

Then there is a section on how to use ERROR LOGS and EXERCISERS and following
that, a section on futures in which RISC is explained, and one of our
newest machines overviewed.

If you'd like me to do this presentation for your group please place a formal
request with Bernie Flanagan and I shall be delighted to do it for you if
you can suggest some dates.

Regards
Alan Trevennor

I'll go for some of that. In fact I would've thought that such a

    Ewan,

There are some people who consider ULTRIX to be the "untouchable"
operating system because they feel it is un-user friendly and directly
competes with VMS. I have had little experience of ULTRIX/UNIX but
I'm prepared to atleast listen and hopefully learn some usefull
skills and then I'll be in a much better position to actively comment
on the "opposition". Those people who want to bury their heads in
the sand and make believe ULTRIX/UNIX is a non-event are sadly
    disillusioned.

    The eli utility.

The /etc/eli program provides a user interface to the error logger,
allowing the system manager to change the error logging parameters
during time sharing. Its primary use is to restart error logging after
changing the contents of the configuration file. To do this type:

    /etc/eli -a

which stops elcsd and restarts it, thus forcing it to read the new
configuration parameters. The most useful of the other options are
shown below, use the -h option to obtain a full list.

/etc/eli -d # Disables error logging by stopping elcsd
/etc/eli -e # Enables error logging when the system is in multi user
    	 	   # mode.
/etc/eli -i # Flushes the kernel error log buffer
/etc/eli -n # Disables error logging to disk.
/etc/eli -s # Enables single user mode error logging
