Hi Chaps,
If you are a shift worker being paid an uplift on your salary for
the trouble etc etc, can you be forced to swap your weekend/evenings
with somebody else on the rota if it happens to be during a week
that you take leave?

Don't fully understand the question. When you say "take leave"
at the end of the question, do you mean "apply for leave"?.
If you apply for leave when you're due to work weekends/evenings
and minimum manning has already been reached then finding a swap
may be the only way to get the time off. I wouldn't think you
could be forced to swap but it may be the only way that a request
for leave and the needs of the business can both be satisfied.

I suppose that's a point. Your leave application could always be
refused.
Suppose I booked my Winter Holiday now but I should be working evenings
when I want the leave. With 9 months notice the leave couldn't really
be refused. Could I be forced to swap my week of evenings so that
I don't take leave during my evening shift.

Steve,
Various "rules" apply here. Not so much Policy & Procedures stuff,
but mostly common sense and a mature attitude to the situation.
Booking leave nine months in advance, should give you and or your
shift co-ordinator time to find a replacement by some means (either
a swap or overtime). However, can you be sure that your shift will
not change in the meantime ???
Generally, one should consider the shift commitment, when applying
for holidays etc. Also one should be aware of manning levels and
avoid weeks when "minimum manning" is already reached, except in
really exceptional circumstances. There might be times, when taking
leave, when scheduled for days, might have just as serious an impact
on the operation.
