917.0. "AS1000A - Disk activity hangs system" by RDGENG::therml.reo.dec.com::BAKERS () Thu Jun 05 1997 09:27

(Cross posted in WINDOWS-NT)

At a customer site we have two new AS1000a.

Unfortunately they both demonstrate the same symptom. If files are copied from
one disk to the other (both NTFS formatted) and during the copy the Disk
Administrator is started, the machine hangs indefinitely and must be rebooted.
The DA only gets as far as bringing up the Initialization Window with 0%.

I have started the performance monitor from a third machine and watched things
like disk time, CPU time, DPCs and Interrupts. When the DA is started, disk
time
and CPU time go down to 0. But there are about 120-150 interrupts/sec, and
between 6-20 DPCs are being queued/sec. However the disk lights no longer
blink,
which leads me to believe the interrupts are coming from the Qlogic embedded
SCSI adapter.
If this happened on just one machine, I would guess it is a faulty controller,
but two?

Each machine has exactly the same configuration with 256MB and 2*4GB in the
internal box. The imbedded QLogic ISP1020 is properly terminated on the back of
the machine. There are no other SCSI controllers in the box. One machine is
running NTS 4.0 with SP3 the other NTS SP2. The Qlogic Driver Ql10wnt.sys is
version 4.0 dated 28.2.97.
No information is written to the Event logger. The AlphaBios is 5.28

Has anyone seen this problem? On 433a with either the Adaptec or Qlogic
controller, this problem does not occur.

Steve @ Paris
