896.0. "Problem installing VMS7.0 on AS1000A 5/333" by DEKVC::SWSPKO () Wed May 07 1997 06:21
I have a problem installing OpenVMS on Alphaserver 1000A 5/333.
It was originally configured as NT system, and I switched to SRM to install
OpenVMS AXP 7.0.
The firmware version installed was as follows.
1) SRM V4.8-74, ARC V5.28, VMS Palcode V1.19-4
I tried firmware 3.7 update CD also.
2) SRM V4.6-227, ARC V5.21, VMS Palcode V1.18-2
The image is [ALPHA1000A]AS1000A_E5_V4_6.EXE
3) SRM V4.5-80 , ARC V5.13, VMS Palcode V1.21-4
The image is [ALPHA1000A]AS1000A_E5_V4_5.EXE
I tried all possible combination using 1),2),3) and VMS7.0, VMS6.2, VMS6.2 1H2,
but failed with the same CPU halt message.
.
.
.
.
jumping to bootstrap code
Halted CPU0
Halt code = 5
Halt instruction executed
PC = 2000fd98
Firmware 3.2 update CD comes with VMS6.2, and Firmware 3.5 update CD comes with
VMS6.2 1H2. I tried to setup those 2 firmware CD using ">>> b -fl 0,a0 dka400",
but got the same CPU halt message.
Firmware 3.7 update CD was the only one I got success, which comes with Digital
-Unix4.0.
Any clue?
Best Regards,
Lee

896.1 | AS1000A 5/333 support 6.2-1h3 or 7.1 | CSC32::HUTMACHER | | Wed May 07 1997 10:44 | 10 |
| Hi Lee
AS1000A 5/333 support started with vms version 6.2-1h3 and support
was missed in vms 7.0 and is supported in vms 7.1
so need vms 6.2-1h3 or 7.1 to support this platform

896.2 | Use at least V6.2-1H3 | WRKSYS::ERB | | Wed May 07 1997 10:45 | 5 |
| The minimum version you need is V6.2-1H3. Also V7.1 will work. The
other versions you tried won't work.

.0 is cross-posted in a number of conferences -- I've posted an answer
elsewhere, so I'll post here too: I've extracted the support database
article that covers the minimum OpenVMS version for various processors,
the OpenVMS upgrade paths, and OpenVMS release information, and placed
it on BULOVA:: -- for the pointer, see VAXAXP::VMSNOTES note 9.*.
