865.0. "Memory channel support with 1000A?" by ROUTES::TEDESCO () Fri Mar 28 1997 16:43

VMSclustering SPD and Sales Update state 1000A support with Memory
Channel. The supported options list and SOC do not list 1000A as
supported. When, if ever, will this support be consistent?

    VMSclustering SPD is wrong.

The SPD is not wrong. The AlphaServer 1000A is not supported with Memory Channel
by Digital Unix, and hence Memory Channel does not appear in any of its
documentation.

However, OpenVMS did a large amount of its Memory Channel development and
testing with 1000As (they're cheap!), and it works just fine. In fact it
works better than some of the larger platforms. So we decided to
support it.

There are a couple of things in the previous notes that I'd like to clarify.

The Engineering group has done no Memory Channel testing with VMS on the 1000A.
When we were told that the configuration was supported by VMS and was listed in
the SPD we requested testing and configuration information; such as OS version,
cluster configuration, firmware revisions, etc. I said that if we received that
information we would add the option(s) to our Supported Options List. I never
received that information and will not add Memory Channel to our SOL for VMS.
Thus, as far as I know, manufacturing will not ship such orders.

We recently completed Memory Channel, TruCluster V1.4a testing on the 1000A 5/333
and 5/400 modules. Those options are now listed on our SOL. I'm not sure if it's
percolated to the external SOL yet; but, it will.

Well, it's a little more complex than I thought. It turns out that we
support the 1000A/4 but not the 1000A/5. God knows why, but the 1000A/5
is missing some required CPU routines. We'll fix it over the next few weeks.
