Need a sanity check, please.
does the 1000a ped. have an external 68hd connection to continue the
SCSI bus external?

NO.
There is a 50pin HD connector, but we advise not to use it unless there
is no other option. If you are using the entire internal backplane,
there is only about 1/2 meter left to connect an external device.
Also, the termination on the end of the narrow bus, ie...after the
added external device MUST BE ACTIVE !! A passive terminator will cause
problems.
I don't have a cross-reference in fornt of me, but there are plenty
other notes in this notesfile that disccus this issue.
