848.0. "PB2GA-JA problems on AXP 1000A ev56/400Mhz" by HLFS00::SLAG_J () Tue Feb 25 1997 15:07

    Hello there,

When have some trouble on a ALPHASERVER 1000A EV56/400Mhz.
The system is running VMSAXP version 6.2-1H3 and the console
is by using the serial console. The systemboard has the
donn't have the onboard vidiochipset and no VGA disable jumper.
So far so good. The system is runnig fine.

When whe want to add a PB2GA-JA (30-46142-01) then the system doesn't
work anymore. The Customet has two of this ALPHASERVER 1000A and
    also two new PB2GA-Ja ( 9FX vision 330 modules ).
If the PB2GA-JA is installed in one of the primary PCI slots
then the system doesn't do a poweron selftest. The only thing
thats happen is a unknow beepcode like :
beep- 7 seconds nothing - beep - pause - burst of three beeps -
    and nothing happens.

Whe see this problem on both 1000A's and on both videoboard's.
    The SRM version is 4.07-196

    Any idea ?

First I'm a little lost on this symptom. I'm going to assume that
you mean the you didn't observe the poweron-selftest at the serial console
line, but the display on the OCP walked through ok.

If this is the case; I would first check the following ev 'CONSOLE'
that it is set to 'SERIAL'.

If my assumption is correct about the poweron-selftest above. What is
happening is the first beep of the srom jumping to console. The second set of
beeps is from the Video BIO code telling you that you didn't plug in the Video
cable. The reson for the lack of display on the serial line is because the
CONSOLE ev is set to GRAPHICS and he powerup display what to that port.

848.2We used the wrong monitor!@#$%^&*UTRTSC::DRUMMENBy motorcycle we do it fastThu Feb 27 1997 11:287
Today I spoke with the engineer who was onsite. The conclusion is
that we get this errormessage if we use an unsupported monitor on
this interface. I think its a bit cruel to confuse us like this if
    we use the wrong monitor.

    hello,

    we had also a seldom problem with the same system.( as1000a / 5 / 400 )

When installing dux4.0b, the x-server was failing the startup.
The system detects 2 Graphic adapters.

But the onboard video was not implemented.
Also the j27 is not impemented on the new system.
Running ecu 1.10 shows teh onboardgrapics disabled.

!!! After enabling?? the " not implemented onboard graphics"
Our technican on costumersite do power off.
Run ecu 1.10 a second time, disabled the onboardgraphics
        a second time.
!!! NOW the onboard graphics was really disabled and unix now knows
the only one graphics adapter on pci slot 3.

    regards helmut
