832.0. "Production System with NT applications keeps crashing" by JALOPY::CUTLER () Tue Feb 04 1997 08:07

I've got a friend who works for a company that provides custom software
applications for large manufacturing companies. They recently sold their
customer (DELPHI aka. GM DELCO electronics) a windows NT based solution on an
ALPHASERVER 1000 4/266. I spoke with him this morning (he's my neighbor) and
he indicated that they're having problems with the system crashing 4-5 times
daily. Apparently this has been going on now for about 2-3 weeks (the system
has been deployed in the plant and is in a production environment). They've
contacted Digital Support and has had field service out. They (field service)
decided to replace the motherboard, when they replaced it, they discovered that
the replacement board was dead. They (field service) then had to turn around and
re-install the "old" motherboard. Now field service has decided that the problem
may be in where their PCI ethernet/SCSI combo card was installed. It now has
been to a different PCI slot. My friend, has indicated to me that he would let
me know if the system starts crashing again. What I'd like to know, is if anyone
else has had similiar problems with the NT/Mikasa combination and is it possible
that the problem could be with the PCI card being in a wrong slot? Here's what
they have:

WINDOWS NT 3.51, SERVICE PACK 4
ORACLE DATABASE
CUSTOM SOFTWARE
MIKASA 4/266, 128MB MEMORY
1 PCI OPTION --- KZPSM-AA (ETHERNET/SCSI COMBO CARD

COMPANY THAT DID THE APPLICATION WAS: LUCAS INDUSTRIES, LIVONIA MICHIGAN

Can you describe the crash seen on the machine?

Field service came out and replaced the MotherBoard and moved their PCI
Ethernet/Scsi controller card to another PCI slot. System has been up and
running now for 2 weeks without a crash. Now you tell me, which of the two
actions actually fixed the problem? I haven't got an idea (neither does the
customer) and I wonder if field service knows themselves.
