39.6Double checking narrow/wide shelfOTOOA::BOUGHNERDAVID BOUGHNERThu Feb 27 1997 10:3518
    RE: .1

    Just want to confirm "wide ready". Was the "shelf" always wide ready
    from the time we started shipping the 1000 ?

    Not a eco or phase in after a certain date/serial number range etc.

    I need to check with my customer as to which 1000 he has 4/200 4/233
    but he has asked about upgrading the shelf from 8-bit to 16-bit.

    What I read here tells me the shelf should already be 16-bit.

    Should it be clear if he inspects the connectors on the storage shelf ?

    I was told something about 4 narrow connectors & 4 wide connectors.

    thanks Dave

     Yes the storage shelf from day one was FW ready, and in fact has not
    changed.

     This is assuming you use a Fast wide controller, in the AS1000 the
     controller is not wide, only fast. The AS1000A has the fast wide
     controller

     As usual all termination and other SCSI rules must be adhered to :)

39.9wide/narrow disconnectOTOOA::BOUGHNERDAVID BOUGHNERFri Feb 28 1997 13:0522
    Just spoke to the customer. He has a 1000 4/200.

    He says he has no 68 pin connector on his shelf all 50 pin.

    Am I missing something or my fault it not being real clear about what
    I'm asking.

    The connectors on the shelf I was told it has 4 narrow 4 wide. My
    customer claims he only has narrow. He is a fairly technical customer
    and I think he knows what he has.

    Are these connectors the key in being wide ready ?

    Any thoughts on the disconnect here ? Keeping in mind what information
    I gave maybe missing something or I do not understand how these
    connectors work.

    thanks Dave

     The problem is that they are not standard 68-pin wide connectors but a
    molex ? type connector. There is a cable and terminator kit that can
    be ordered. I don't have all the information in front of me. If you
    send me mail off line I'll forward it around and get all the parts
    numbers for you . (wrksks::hesch)

The cable kit for a wide controller in a 1000 is PB2HA-BA.
It requires a wide controller for connection and use with
wide drives. If you are using wide drives in narrow mode
with the integrated narrow controller; you'll need
cable kit PB2HA-BB instead.

Leon is correct in stating that the wide connectors are not
standard. Visually they are smaller than the 50 pin narrow
connectors.

There are four each of the narrow and wide connectors:
top, bottom of top-half of backplane and top,bottom of
bottom-half of backplane.
