OS/390 could be considered MVS/ESA V6. But basically it is
a packaging method where the customer orders one product, with the
applicable features(Communications Server/390[aka VTAM V4R4 plus
TCP/IP V3], DB2, etc) and all the prerequisite products will
automatically be bundled together and preinstalled so that
customer installtion of OS/390 will automatically include all
the prereq products. As with all new releases of IBM products, there
will also be new functionality.
BTW, previously customers had to install each individual product
seperately.

We will install OS/390 as part of our ongoing lab support so
there will be no additional charge from S&CSI.
As to how much _more_ it will cost EDS is unknown to me. The
last configuration we ran for OS/390(about 1.5 months ago), the
monthly cost would be around $23k. We don't know what EDS is
currently paying IBM so I can't give you a net cost.
BTW, not included in the above figure is whatever one time
charge(OTC) items that IBM requires. This last matter is to still
be researched.

IBM has what is called Single Version Charging(SVC) which allows
customers to order new software, start paying for that new software,
and continue running the _old_ software at no charge for one year
after the installation of the new software.
> 4) What is the benefit of upgrading to OS/390?
a) Being able to qualify IBM I/C product set against the current
IBM products.
b) Positioning the IBM lab for newer hardware support.
c) Predictable release schedule(once per year) for IBM's mainstream
operating system AND THEIR BUNDLED LAYERED PRODUCTS.
Does this provide you with what you need?
