5.0. "HOW TO USE NOTES - HINTS" by DELNI::ROUNDS () Thu Nov 12 1987 12:27

                   DIRECTORY/PRINT/SAVE COMMANDS
                   -----------------------------

The DIRECTORY command shows a directory of the topics in a con-
ference. While you are in a conference, you can issue the
DIRECTORY command at any time. The directory shows you the topic
number, who wrote the topic and when, and the topic's title.

The DIRECTORY/ALL command tells VAX Notes you want to include in
the directory the replies to each topic. Replies can also have
        titles.

Although the use of titles on replies is optional, there is a good
reason for using them. When all notes in a discussion have meaningful
titles, you can use the DIRECTORY/ALL command to get a quick
        summary of a discussion.

Some commands allow you to specify a range of notes. You can limit
the range to topics only, or include replies in the range.

To list topics only, use whole numbers in the note range. Do NOT type
a period after either the starting or ending topic number. To include
replies, you can use the /ALL qualifier or the wildcard character (*).

Here is a quick review of the ways you can specify a range of notes:

           Description of range Example
           ----------------------------------------- -------
A topic and all its replies 9.*
A range of topics only 10-39
           All topics * or ALL
A range of topics, including replies 1.*-5.*
All notes in the conference *.*

The DIRECTORY command has several qualifiers which allow you to limit
the directory listing to those meeting certain criteria. Specifically,
you can see a directory of notes by:

        Criterion Format Example
        --------- ----------------- ----------------------------

        Author /AUTHOR=username DIR/AUTHOR=TRACY 10-50

        Title /TITLE="string" DIR/TITLE="FIXED" *.*

        Date-time /BEFORE=date-time DIR/BEFORE=01-MAR:08:00 99-1
                            /SINCE=date-time DIR/SINCE=YESTERDAY *.*

        Keyword /KEYWORD=keyword DIR/KEYWORD=PAPER 2.*-20.*

        Not yet seen /UNSEEN DIR/UNSEEN 100-LAST

You can use these qualifiers alone or in combination to get a directory
of just the notes you are interested in seeing. You do not have to
manually search the entire directory for notes you are interested in.

The PRINT and SAVE commands have the same qualifiers as the DIRECTORY
command for limiting the notes to be printed or stored in a file,
        respectively.

For example, if you want print all the notes in the conference written
by FLOYD that have the word "pink" in the title, you would type:

        PRINT/TITLE="PINK"/AUTHOR=FLOYD *.*

You could save all the notes with the keyword PIGS and store the notes
in a file called ANIMALS.TXT by typing:

        SAVE/KEYWORD=PIGS ANIMALS *.*
