 We run quite a large VMS installation here covering a broad spectrum of VAX and Alpha systems.
 These range from workstations to large end machines (ie. 7000 series). The desktop is moving away 
from Windows 3.1 to an NT platform and we will probably follow a workgroup style single domain 
strategy. The VMS boxes provide a wide and varied level of function to the users. The central cluster 
runs Pathworks v5 and offers the shared filing system via an SW800 cab with approx. 140Gb of storage.
As we migrate to an NT environment, I would hope that a product such as VMS management tools would
ease the integration of the 2 operating systems. It should also provide the central mamanegement interface
thawe require (ie. NT controlling both VMS and NT). I believe it may assist our backup strategies in that 
we should be able to access the large VMS based TZ877 DLT devices from the NTsystems. This would save 
expensive re-investment in further backup technology. 
As far as disk management goes, I've been in the fortunate position that all our systems generally have plenty of
spare capacity. This does not mean however that I know what's on the disks or what they are being used for. 
I've set up my own DCL procedure which reports back each week on any new root level directories created and
any existing directories that have increased in space by more than 10%. I know that a few years ago Digital had the 
idea of near-line storage and shelving files. As far as I know this concept has never really come to fruition either becuase 
of the expense fo the hardware to provide the necessary retrieval or the lack of a better suited near line storage device.
 Another area that causes large inconvenience where users files are concerned is the frequent number of restores required.
This is basically down to Pathworks and DOS only supporting single file versions and the easy way in which PC files can 
become corrupted. This means frequent VMS restores for single files. I would love to see a client based product that would allow 
the user to control their own restores. Let the system manager still dictate the backup policy but at least let the user view what is
available on backup, is it on-line or stored etc...
I'll provide more feedback once I've installed the management s/ware and had a play with it.

 Hi,
We are migrating the desktops from Vaxstations (3100 to 4000-96) to Intel workstations (PC - Pentium 166 to PPro 200).
On the desktops we will be running Windows NT (currently V3.51 sp5).  We have users connect to a headless vaxstations
to operate their tools.  Eventually the tools are suppose to be ported to the WinNT platform (over the next 2-3 years).
We (support staff) are also just getting PCs on our desktop.  We need to be able to manage the systems from an X environment
or over phone lines.  

Our environment includes approx 17 clusters with 600 workstations.  We also have approx. 250 Xterminals, 350 Sun Unix, and
3000+ PC (not all on NT yet).

I need off-site storage of backup media.  Right now, we
backup and move the tapes off-site.  I want to locate our
tape drives off-site.  No, I don't want FDDI.  Perhaps
Fibre Channel looks good.  Got anything yet?

We run OpenVMS because our application used to require it.
We now run OpenVMS because it is "entrenched".  Personally,
I prefer OpenVMS, but it's been difficult.

We used Rdb but that was sold to Computer Associates.

I migrated our site away from Perfect Disk to the Poly
Center defragger.  Now, the Poly Center stuff has been
sold to Computer Associates.  Will probably drop the
Data Collector and Performance Advisor soon from our
running systems.

Hard to tell what DEC will support in the future.

My supervisor tells people that we use VMS but that won't
necessarily be the case the next time we upgrade.  She's
considering moving to an IBM RISC platform using DB2.  To
me, it's a nighmare.

I like DEC and have been an advocate of theirs for a long
time.

 Mainly run VMS, recently added some NT workstations.
However, at the moment NT is still nowhere near as reliable
as VMS, and suffers the major drawback that you can't
"log on" to NT to fix a problem (by log on I mean use a text
terminal from anywhere and log in to do useful things like
you can if there's a problem on any VMS machine in our 
European network). Mainly looking at TNT for curiosity.
It would be nice to see a reciprocal program which let you
manage a load of NT machines from a VMS nox (Alpha _or_ VAX
- there are still an awful lot of VAXes in use, and
many companies like to use them as OSU web servers and for
jobs that don't require vast amounts of CPU power, but can
use the excellent throughput that even the older VAXen can 
offer). Which reminds me - hurry up and get Java going on
VAXes - I've go a bit of macro to go from F_FLOAT to IEEE
format if you're short of VMS engineers now that DEC have
tried to run VMS into the ground.

 I am the systems administrator for 3 OpenVMS servers and 1 Windows
NT 4.0 server. Currently I support 80 users across these 4
platforms. We experimented with Pathworks 3.3 in 1990 and have used
used it ever since for PC-Vax file transfer. I tried to use
Manageworks 5.1, but found that the memory requirements were
to great. We are now using Windows NT 4.0 on a pentium pro 200
because our Vax 4000-100 is overloaded, and Windows NT is a
solid platform for PowerHouse and Access developement, and provides
other abilities such as browser access to our data. I would like 
to see less license restrictions applied to Pathworks, and am 
looking foreward to the Pathworks 32 release to see more Windows NT-
Vax interconnection.

We manage a VMS environment which is part and parcel VAX 
and Alpha and will probably be all Alpha in 2 years.  Vaxes
are prsently VMS V5.5-2 thru VMS V6.1 and the Alphas are
VMS V6.1 thru VMS V6.2 1H3.

I downloaded the kit to home and sneaker netted it via
floppy to work where I FTP'd it to a VAX.  2 problems
1) the zip format is incompatible with the freeware UNZIP
2) the PCSi file is unusable and the fix noted here helped some
but did not fix the problem.

I manage primarily OpenVMS systems.  I help users get access from
windows NT systems to the VMS systems.  We are migrating the
majority of users from VMS systems (vax 3100 and 4000) to 
windows NT machines (Intel Dell).  

I support tier 2/3 and am trying to use this tools so that our
tier 1 support, not very familiar with OPENVMS, can support the
printer queues.  

I would like to point out that I have a reproducable GPF on the Client
side (NT) and would like to know how to update/report this bug.
I am attempting to get this tools working across 20 clusters and 
multiple stand alone nodes.  I support VAX clusters and Alpha 
servers.

I also support 14 major network printers and 50+ smaller network
printers.  I believe that this quantity of printer queues
and clusters is the cause of overloading the program.

I hope the management station will allow convient and higher productivity for operation of print and batch queues. 

We have large number of batch processes that run and need continuous control over print queues.

We have developed our own management screens using VT terminals but P.C. capabilities will drastically improve productivity of these activities.

Our storage requirements are not as intensive but more graphical representations of drive capacities and automated tools for cleanup, alarms for space utilization and drag and drop file movement would be a good start.

Hi

I have used the OpenVMS Management Station software in the 
past and have found it very useful, easy to use. I have 
also commented on the problem we have, ie. there is only
one level (very high) of access, which prevents us 
distributing the product to some who would benefit greatly
from having it, ie. we need to be able to tailor who has
access to which module.

I have a new problem now, which is of concern. My PC has
recently been upgraded to Windows 95 and is running
Pathworks for Windows 95 (using TCP/IP as its Transport) 
as well. Your notes specify this as an unsupported platform
for running the OpenVMS Management software.

Is it likely that I will be able to run a later release of
the product to get around this problem? It would be a great
shame if this is not the case.

I am currently responsible for installing, configuring and
implementing OPEN VMS at this company.  We currently have 3 
Alpha Servers 2100 and 1 VAX with VMS 6.2.  We also have 1
alpha workstation wirh NT4.0.  I am very interested in the 
Management Station since I am currently trying to famliarize
my collegues, primarily Novell admins', with VMS.  In addition
we are implementing a help desk on an NT platform where MS 
might be handy.

I would like to see this software involved with disk/file 
systems.  ex RAID status/monitoring, file system monltoring 
including backups, disk space/usage.  Process and memory
monitoring.  A performance monitoring package.

We are heading towards NTX.X in the future on servers and 
desktops.  I/we could use any package that would aid in 
migration or in decision making.

The next error message displayed when I want to show
flags in UAF (if click to FLAG):

PWMGMT caused a General Protection Fault in
module VMSUAOMM.DLL at 0004:B657

Choose close. PWMGMT will close.

The next start management station enabled only after
logout and login.

I use software in next environment:
processor: pentium 120
memory: 40MB
OS: Windows NT workstation 4.0
ManageWorks 2.1 installed

The TNT server is downloaded from this page and
run under VMS 6.2 on Alpha and VAX.

Other functions working properly, but I can browsing 
only in UAF or only in LAN manager separately.

This software is help me in management VMS accounts.
