150.0. "TNT021 client kit files not useable from OpenVMS Alpha V7.1" by VNASWS::WILFRIED (Wilfried Bergmann, Austria) Thu Mar 27 1997 10:06

Just installed OpenVMS 7.1 on a AlphaStation 500/400. The TNT client files
created during the VMS installation at SYS$COMMON:[TNT.CLIENT] did _not_
work for me as expected.

I followed the OpenVMS installation guide on the VMS 7.1 CD-ROM, like using
FTP, binary mode to copy over the files in SYS$COMMON:[TNT.CLIENT] to my
Windows NT 4.0 server PC.

But the DISKIMAG.EXE supposed to create the installation floppies didn't
do anything useful. No floppy access, no error msg, just nothing.

I also tried a tool called WINIMAGE, that usually can read the *.IMG files
with no success.

THen I copied the client kit TNT021.EXE from
	www.openvms.digital.com/openvms/products/argus/order

which lead to an installable client on NT 4.0.

My question: what's wrong with the files in SYS$COMMON:[TNT.CLIENT] provided
by the VMS 7.1 installation?

BTW, the client help file, section "What's New in This Release?" still doesn't
mention NT 4.0 as a supported version!

Yes it does. Scroll down a bit to Other Features:

Microsoft Windows NTTM Versions 4.0 and 3.51 are supported, as well as
Windows 95. You can install the OpenVMS Management Station client
software on your Windows NT or Windows 95 system and use it to manage
    your OpenVMS systems.

The Help also has a Supported Configurations topic that shows all of the
    options, including NT 4.0.

But, you are correct that the DISKIMAGE file on the CD is corrupt. We
have submitted a fix (I'll let the more informed add the details...).

The web site has a valid .EXE as you found out.

BTW, thanks for your note, we do appreciate it.

To complete my answer, there is a TIMA kit that fixes this problem.
You can find this kit and related documents at :

    ftp://ftp.service.digital.com/public/vms/axp/v7.1/

Here is the related readme file

TITLE: OpenVMS ALPTNT01_071 Alpha V7.1 DISKIMAG.EXE ECO Summary

This ECO contains the following files:

        alptnt01_071.README
        alptnt01_071.CHKSUM
        alptnt01_071.CVRLET_TXT
        alptnt01_071.a-dcx_axpexe

NOTE: An OpenVMS saveset or PCSI installation file is stored
on the Internet in a self-expanding compressed file.
The name of the compressed file will be kit_name-dcx_vaxexe
for OpenVMS VAX or kit_name-dcx_axpexe for OpenVMS Alpha.

Once the file is copied to your system, it can be expanded
by typing RUN compressed_file. The resultant file will
be the OpenVMS saveset or PCSI installation file which
can be used to install the ECO.

    ECO KIT SUMMARY:

An ECO kit exists for DISKIMAG.EXE on OpenVMS Alpha V7.1.
This kit addresses the following problems:

o DISKIMAG.EXE is an OpenVMS Management Station V2.1 file that
ships with the OpenVMS Alpha operating systems. The file shipped
with OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 is in the wrong file format and therefore,
corrupt. The file is shipping as "stream" and should be in the
format "Fixed length 512 byte records".

DISKIMAG.EXE is located in the [TNT.CLIENT] directory.
Normally, the customer would FTP the DISKIMAG.EXE and
TNTCLID%.IMG files from [TNT.CLIENT] to their PC. The
DISKIMAG.EXE file is then used to expand the TNTCLID%.IMG files
to create floppy media used to install the OpenVMS Management
Station on a PC. However, if the customer attempts to use the
current DISKIMAG.EXE shipped with OpenVMS Alpha V7.1 to expand
the TNTCLID%.IMG files, the program will fail and be terminated
         by Windows.

    INSTALLATION NOTES:

The system does not need to be rebooted after this kit is installed.
However, if you have other nodes in your OpenVMS VMScluster, they
    should
be rebooted or you should install this kit on each system in order to
make use of the new image(s).

After installation is complete, FTP the DISKIMAG.EXE and TNTCLID%.IMG
files from [TNT.CLIENT] to your PC. The DISKIMAG.EXE file is then used
to expand the TNTCLID%.IMG files to create floppy media. Use this
    media
to install the OpenVMS Management Station on a PC.

150.3OpenVMS Management Station help file - re .1 - does _not_ mention NT 4.0VNASWS::WILFRIEDWilfried Bergmann, AustriaThu Mar 27 1997 13:5623
Kevin,

sorry, but I must insist that at least the help file I got from the
client kit I copied as mentioned in .0 does _not_ contain NT 4.0, neither
in the "Other Features" section:

"Microsoft Windowns NTTM Version 3.51 and Windows 95 are supported. You can
install ..."

nor in the "Supported Configurations" topic:

PC Clent Software
Microsoft Windows NT, 3.51
Microsoft Windows 95
Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, 3.11
Microsoft Windows, 3.1

If you want, I can mail you the help file.

Thanks for your help!

Wilfried

You are indeed correct. The Overview manual does say 4.0, the
web page says 4.0, but the help does not. 8-|

Thanks again for pointing this out!
