6442.0. "%CMA-F-EXCCOP enabling alarm rules." by GADWAL::W_MCGAW () Fri Apr 19 1996 22:06

    Hi,

    I have a customer who is seeing the following access violation from
    enabling DECmcc alarm rules and then issueing a show command with an at
    start qualifier of (+999-00:00:00). Shortly after that, he gets the
    accvio message. He has about 48 rules he is enabling and has also
    tried dividing up the enables into 6 separate command procedures
    containing 8 rules each. All of the batch processes terminate with the
    accvio.

    Walt,

    Pls. provide more detail... what version of OpenVMS? Are you using
    DETmcc? Is this a new installation? Has this "method" ever worked? If
    'YES', when was the last time it ran properly and more importantly,
    what was changed just prior to it breaking...?

    I'm not familiar with the +999, but I'm not an internals wizard... 8^)!
    Are you sure this is allowable? The accvio message is puzzling... in
    the past, we've seen CMA errors when upgrading from OpenVMS V5.5-2 to
    V6.1; there's a patch for that... Also, look into other patches, that I
    believe are in the CSC and in other notes in this conference...

    BTW, if you are using BMS V1.4, and using the Alarm Manager, which is
    one of the apps you can launch from the IMPM, this could be your
    problem... to the best of my knowledge... it don't work!

    good luck,

    /Mic

6442.2Maybe a quotas problem ?DSVB03::TABONEMon Apr 22 1996 15:1414
Hi Walt,

I agree with Mic's questions. I add one : are the quotas well set ?
I often see this problem for bad quotas reasons !

The mcc command with "at start=(+999-00:00:00)" qualifier is correct and
recommended in alarm fm manual use.
Has your customer the problem if he runs only one of his batch processes
(ie : enabling only 8 rules ) ?
After how long do the ACCVIOs occur ?

Best regards,

Actually, I am on a different workstation, starting up a decterm remotely on
the workstation with MCC installed. This is the only window I have open on
that

Here are my quotas... The only difference was Bytlm. Mine was 100000. I
boosted
it up to 200000 and the alarms still stack dump.

I ran ANALYZE/SYSTEM to look at the running batch job, and found that the
BUFIO byte count was equal to the BUFIO byte limit (200,000) so I raised it to
400000, and tried enabling all 20 alarms... The process immediately took all
of
those resources as well. Here is the process data along with the formatted

What is going on?

Hi Walt,

Could you tell me what is the VMS version and if it is a phase 4 or phase 5
node ?
Does they make some changes in the system : upgrades, new products like DEC C++,
etc...

Best regards,
Philippe
6442.5VMS V6.1, no changes.GADWAL::W_MCGAWTue Apr 23 1996 15:0816
    Hi Philippe,

    The customer is running DECmcc V1.4 and VMS V6.1. It is Phase IV
    DECnet and this is being configured new. It has not worked in the past
    and had any changes made.

    Best regards,

    Let me know if you would like this escalated instead of working it via
    the notes conference.
6442.6okay for escalation.DSVB03::TABONETue Apr 23 1996 16:0412
Hi Walt,

Yes, I think you should escalated this problem in IPMT.
But before, could you verify that MCC was installed in last position ?
As you certainly know at installation time MCC is linked with system
libraries, So, if VMS was upgraded after mcc installed this should
explain the problem. If it is the case, the solution is to install again mcc.
There is certainly a problem like that because a lot of customers use the
same way than yours to enable rules and have no problem !

6442.7Will check and escalate.GADWAL::W_MCGAWTue Apr 23 1996 16:5810
    Hi Philippe,

    I will check that order with the customer and if DECmcc was installed
    last, will go ahead with the escalation.

    Thank you and best regards,

6442.8God problem. But why is the client trying to do this?RANGER::NAVKALThu Apr 25 1996 02:4014
	Well thats a good problem. If I were to make a guess the problem could
	be in either in IM or in Alarms. The +999 indicates future time (and I
	admit my meory is weak here). For the current maintainers/developers
	of Alarms module, this should be fairly easy problem to reproduce.
	The fact that it is on decnet has no bearing on the problem.

	The last time we did some thing like this was when I and my friend
	Samuil	Shmuylovich wrote a paper on historical data and Alarms
	rule interaction. And this was back in 1992/93!

	Well please let us know what you find :-)

6442.9escalating the problem.GADWAL::W_MCGAWThu Apr 25 1996 15:5213
    Hi Anil,

    The customer has no better way to test for reachability of his node4
    and terminal server entities. I believe it is a resource problem of
    some sort because if we limit the alarms enabled to 5 it works for a
    while. 10 alarms causes the error immediately. I am escalating this
    to the DECmcc engineering group for their assistance and will try to be
    sure to post the fix here when I receive it.
