PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The new versions of the DECmcc network management products -- V1.4 for all
products but the DECmcc Network Manager 400, which is now available in V2.4
-- have been made even more reliable and higher quality than previous
versions to satisfy the needs of the most demanding network managers.
The DECmcc Framework, network management packages, and associated options --
all members of the POLYCENTER family of products -- offer network management
for multivendor computing environments. Network management addresses
network availability and minimizes the impact of network downtime on user
productivity and organizational performance.
DECmcc functionality includes an extensive alarm and notification capability
used worldwide by a variety of large, global corporations in multiple
industries. The DECmcc products have been field tested in some of the most
demanding environments (managing stock exchange, defense, banking and
telecommunications networks) and have proven to meet the stringent
requirements of users whose networks are their core business and require
critical network management capabilities.
The DECmcc products span wide domains based on published application
interfaces defined by Digital's Enterprise Management Architecture (EMA).
They can be extended to include any manageable entity that can be reached
via the network.
The new versions run on OpenVMS/VAX V5.5-2 through V6.1 operating systems
and require any valid VAX, MicroVAX, VAXstation, or VAXserver configuration
for implementation as specified in the SPD associated with each product.
They also run on ULTRIX/RISC V4.3A through V4.4 and require a DECstation or
server.
The following DECmcc network management solutions are comprised of
presentation, functional, and access modules. Unless otherwise noted, all
products that follow are available on both ULTRIX/RISC and OpenVMS/VAX
platforms.

BENEFITS
The DECmcc Network Manager product suite allows customers to manage
thousands of data and/or voice networks with unique features. One particular
telecommunications operator is managing over 15,000 network elements and up
to 100,000 alarms or events per day with DECmcc prducts.
DECmcc enables the management of LANs better than some other less robust
solutions on the market because it provides a physical, in addition to
logical, view of the network; a physical view is essential in managing
multivendor networks.
Also, DECmcc provides a variety of presentation modules including a command
line interface, which is a unique feature. The product suite also includes a
development toolkit that enables customization, allowing developers to add
new access or functional modules.
In addition, Digital's DECmcc network management solutions provide the most
robust set of products available for performing the following network
management functions:
o Automatic Discovery and Mapping: The ability to have a system on the
network automatically query network devices and construct a model of the
existing network topology. Auto-topology is critical for maintaining
inventories and managing TCP/IP, Ethernet, and DECnet networks and PC
LANs, which do not require registration of new systems when these are
added to the network.
o Performance Monitoring: Monitoring network performance for early
detection of network or system problems; Regular LAN and WAN performance
monitoring can establish threshold performance limits and reduce the
magnitude of both short- and long-term bottlenecks.
o Fault Management: Managing the process of detecting and resolving network
hardware or software faults.
o Security Management: Monitoring and protecting networks from unauthorized
access.
Therefore, in summary, DECmcc has been successfully deployed in worldwide
networks for many years under some of the most stringent conditions
imaginable. It manages telephone networks, stock exchange networks, and many
other mission critical networks found in the banking, defense, and
information industries; customers can continue to rely on decmcc as their
solution of choice.
Migration
In terms of price/performance, DECmcc sells for the same price as other
network management products but has a much greater network management
capacity. ULTRIX/RISC customers can now also benefit from migration to the
Alpha platform in terms of the better price/performance ratio and openness
of DEC OSF/1 software.
DECmcc on ULTRIX/RISC will continued to be maintained for the next two
years (1995 & 1996). It is recommended that ULTRIX/RISC users consider
migrating to the Alpha platform. Products based on the same EMA as DECmcc
are available. The transition can be a smooth one since most of the features
found in the DECmcc Network Manager 200 are also included in either the
TeMIP Framework or the POLYCENTER NetView and DECnet Manager products for
DEC OSF/1 based Alpha systems.
DECmcc users on the OpenVMS/VAX platform should continue to use DECmcc on
OpenVMS/VAX; and can migrate to the new versions described under
"AVAILABILITY AND ORDERING" section of this Sales Update article.
DECmcc customers should also plan on participating in the DECmcc User Group
meeting this spring (May 1995), which will clarify current versus future
opportunities. For more information on migration opportunities, to become a
member of the DECmcc User Group, or to receive copies of the "DECmcc
Newsletter," contact Susan Pomerleau, Tel: [33]92956110 / Fax: [33]92956363.
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
The main competition for DECmcc Network Manager product set comes from a
variety of SNMP based network management products that do not provide the
same breadth of features, scalability, or price/performance as DECmcc
software. Users should not migrate to solutions that do not match the breath
and scope of DECmcc products. With the new releases of the product suite,
users will have the capabilities they have always appreciated in new,
optimized versions of the code.
AVAILABILITY AND ORDERING
The DECmcc network management portfolio of products will be available
through Digital. Products that support ULTRIX V4.4 on RISC will be available
via CONDIST (consolidated distribution service) in mid-February; products
that support OpenVMS V6.0 and V6.1 on VAX will be available via CONDIST in
mid-March.

6235.1 | where/when do we get the kit? | DPDMAI::GALVIN | The Energizer Bunny's Trainer... | Sun Feb 12 1995 19:57 | 11 |
| Hubert,
We have purchased the T2.4 software for our client here in the US. How
do we go about getting the V2.4 version? Do we go through Susan or the
Sales Rep or get the kit off the network as we did for the T version...
thanks,
/Mic

Hubert,
Apparently, several requests are coming from the field which are asking
the same question. Can you please put this reoccurring question (listed below)
into the notes file and/or send it to persons who ask so that we may have one
standard response. Thank-you in advance.
QUESTION:
"Is there an official SSB version (V1.4 & V2.4) of the
DECmcc products available on the network to -pull-
across from a public directory as we did previously
for the field test kits (T1.4 & T2.4)?"
ANSWER: "No"
Let me explain a bit for those who may need to understand why... The
"T" version kits are field test kits which the DECmcc engineering group has the
right to distribute to customers who would like to participate as field test
sites.
NOTE: for those customers who participated in evaluating
these field test versions (thank-you), however, the
software pulled from the public directories is the
property of Digital Equipment Corporation and is NOT
considered an official version of the product (supported
by Digital). That's what the SSB version is for, it
symbolizes the fact that it has been regression tested
extensively and has passed through Digitals official
release process (ensuring certain quality levels and
the availability of required ongoing support).
WARNING !!! For those of you who pulled "T" (field
test) versions of the software off of the network,
this software has a "time-bomb" embedded into it to
ensure that it is not used in production environments.
The ULTRIX field test was started in September and ended
in December 1994; the OpenVMS field test started in
December 1994 and will end in March 1995.
THE FIELD TEST ("T1.4/T2.4") SOFTWARE WILL CEASE TO
OPERATE AS OF MAY 15, 1995.
Customers can purchase the official "V1.4 or V2.4" versions of the
software via the normal ordering channels. Software is available via the
CONDIST (CD-ROM distribution for ULTRIX/RISC as of February 10th, 1995, and for
OpenVMS/VAX as of March 17th, 1995) or via normal ordering channels (TK50 media
for ULTRIX/RISC as of the end of February, and for OpenVMS as mid-March).
Please check to see if your customer has "right to next version"
licensed media via automatic update software subscription services (LPS:
QT-*****-L9) or due to the fact that they purchased a traditional update license
(QA-*****-RA) at the time that they bought their original V1.3 or V2.3 DECmcc
license (prior to 1995). If they do, then V1.4/V2.4 has already been purchased;
if your customer has NEITHER of these options, then they will have to purchase
the new version media. Discounts are available via your local sales
representative under normal migration conditions.
No special migration part numbers from V1.3 to V1.4 are available except
for ULTRIX users who can chose to migration from V1.3 or V1.4 to the V2.0 OSF
version of DECmcc (PNM200). If your customer is an ULTRIX user who wishes to
migrate to the ALPHA AXP OSF1 based solution, please contact me. If your
customer is an OpenVMS/VAX user, then they should migrate to the V1.4/V2.4
version of the DECmcc.
Lastly, ALL DECmcc users are invited to pull a copy of the DECmcc
Newsletter from the public directory. It provides information regarding new
releases, migration plans, product positioning, training, and best of all, the
establishment of a DECmcc Users Group beginning this spring. Act NOW!!! Pull
across a copy of the Newsletter and fill in the DECmcc User's Group
Questionnaire in ATTACHMENT "D" and return it to me ASAP to be added to the
invitation list. Don't wait, these invitations will be sent out very soon!!!
Best Regards,
Susan Pomerleau

6235.4 | Say it ain't so, Joe! | DPDMAI::GALVIN | The Energizer Bunny's Trainer... | Mon Feb 13 1995 14:09 | 24 |
| Susan/Hubert,
This is very strange... Does that mean that anyone that installed the
T2.4 release will have to re-install when the V2.4 release has been
released? And this is going to occur in March '95? And there's a time
bomb in the current 'T' release?
This is going to cause a stir... I'm sure I'm not the only person that
has purchased T2.4 thinking that when the V2.4 release comes out I need
to simply re-install the kit to change the 'T' to a 'V'... and what's
this time bomb stuff... I thought that's why we used LMF?
I'm very disappointed in this decision if I'm reading it right... My
client was forced to go to T2.4 due to VMS compatibility issues... we
sold them a VAX4705A that supported OpenVMS V6.1, they didn't want to
go backwards to V5.5-2H4, and they wanted OSI capabilities... now
you're telling me, as I get ready to rollout that we must re-install
several months worth of work...? Not a good management decision!
/Mic

You named it. Eventually you simply re-instal to change the "T" to a "V".
Well, it does a little bit more ... some additional problems were also fixed
which are in V2.4 (or V1.4 for the rest). No reason to worry,
Hubert.

| Hello Chris,
the newsletter is announced in note 6187 (see also conference notice in the
character cell user interface after opening the MCC conference, otherwise in
decwindows user interface from pull-down menu CONFERENCE and option SHOW/MODIFY)
Agree, it's not so obvious if one uses decwindows style user interface. To
save you searching, the newsletter can bbe copied from :
TOUDON::MCC$PUBLIC:[INFO]MCC_NEWSLETTER_1.PS 13728 blocks!
|
6235.9 | short summary | AZUR::LANGENSTEIN | Hubert Langensteiner, @VBE | Fri Feb 17 1995 10:30 | 25 |
| The kits (both ULTRIX/RISC - supporting 4.2A to 4.4, and OpenVMS/VAX -
supporting 5.5-2 to 6.1) have been sent to SSB (manufacturing).
They can be ordered through the normal processes (unless your customer
has subscribed to a QT-*****-L9 automatic update service or a QL-*****-RA right
to next update option that had to be purchased at the same time as the original
license was bought).
A Sales Update article is lised in the DECmcc Notes file AZUR::MCC,
note 6235 or can be copied from TOUDON::MCC$PUBLIC:[INFO]MCC_SALES_UPDATE.TXT
for your review. But more importantly, please copy the DECmcc Newsletter from
TOUDON::MCC$PUBLIC:[INFO]MCC_NEWSLETTER_1.PS. You will find a lot of good
information there and it is critical that your customers fill out and return
ATTACHEMENT "D". This will trigger their receiving regular copies of the
DECmcc Newsletter and an invitation to the DECmcc Users group which is having
its first meeting this May. Please get this information ASAP and get your
customers to turn-it-around prior to March 15. If I don't have (at a minimum)
their names and addresses by that date, they will not receive invitations
unfortunately.
I hope this mail, the Newsletter and Sales Update attached can provide
you with the information you need to distribute to your customers. Thanks for
your continued support, and please don't hesitate to write with any further
questions you may have to Susan Pomerleau, DECmcc Product Manager, @VBO and
ULYSSE::POMERLEAU, DTN 828-6110.

Does this mean that DECmcc is getting new life?!!!!
Is there a place that internal people that support the product can pull

6235.11 | What about T1.4 for IPMT cases? | BWTEAL::W_MCGAW | | Fri Mar 10 1995 17:14 | 13 |
| Hi,
I need to clarify something here with the TIME BOMB. What about the
customers who installed T1.4 as a fix to IPMT escalations? Are those
also going to stop functioning? If so, it would be nice if a list of
those customers could be formulated and sent to the customer support
centers for follow up. Once we close the call, it is difficult for
us to go back and find who has been given the T1.4/T2.4 kits.
Thanks,

6235.12 | "T" must be eventually replaced by "V" | AZUR::LANGENSTEIN | Hubert Langensteiner, @VBE | Fri Mar 10 1995 19:05 | 12 |
| Everybody who installed T1.4 should upgrade to V1.4.
Obviously, this upgrade would zip a problem fix proposed after V1.4 wa
submitted to SSB - the T1.4/T2.4 plus fix implementations you mentioned.
We already planned to generate a list of these cases and send a notice.
We may also want to compile a list of these fixes that were proposed after
V1.4 and make it available to the users, e.g. perhaps also post it in this
notes file.
Regards,
Hubert.

6235.14 | My answer to 6235.10 | AZUR::LANGENSTEIN | Hubert Langensteiner, @VBE | Mon Mar 13 1995 14:02 | 19 |
| >> Does this mean that DECmcc is getting new life?!!!!
Do not know how you define "new life"? As you probably saw in IPMT we do our
best to reduce the backlog of problem reports received in the past and to more
timely respond to new entries.
>> Is there a place that internal people that support the product can pull
the SSB release of V1.4/V2.4 kits to install?
MCC V1.4 for Ultrix is released on CD media as part of the software library
update, and on TK 50 otherwise.
MCC V1.4 for VAX/VMS is released on TK 50 and wil be also released on CD media
as part of the software library update on Mrach 17th (this week).
I suggest that you access your local software library for pulling the SSB kits.
Regards,

What I meant was this: It sounds like we are going to continue the product
(possibly enhance it) since a customer user group is being started and a
newsletter. We were told originally that DECmcc was to be retired and
Polycenter Netview would be replacing it. Newsletters and users groups were
things customers wanted when we were actively supporting the product and they
never came about.
Thanks,
