and advancements in technology. The availability and conditions for
products and services may vary from country to country."
POLYCENTER DIRECTIONS 18-Jan-1995
--------------------- -----------
In today's client/server environment, easy and transparent availability
of data and applications from anywhere on the network requires that
the entire system run smoothly, consistently, and efficiently. This
requires a high level of management sophistication and integration of
the network, system, storage, and database administration tools.
The POLYCENTER vision is to simplify the vastly complex arena of
client/server data management functions via cross-platform data
management tools that are transparent to the user. These tools assist
the desktop user as well as network and systems management operations.
This vision is made possible by the integration of the POLYCENTER
portfolio of management products.
The first priority of the POLYCENTER products is to support Digital
system sales by enhancing the reputation of Digital's systems through
superior manageability. Since Digital frequently sells systems into
competitor and mixed-vendor accounts, the second priority for the
POLYCENTER products is to support this open, client/server environment
through the ability to manage multivendor UNIX and PC systems from a
Digital POLYCENTER solution.
Making up the POLYCENTER portfolio are the following suites:
-Network Management
-Storage Management
-Configuration/Change Management (Asset Management)
-Problem Management
-Performance/Capacity Planning/Accounting Management
-Automation (Administration and Operations)
-Security Management
Digital's competitive advantage with POLYCENTER network and
systems management is characterized as follows:
A. POLYCENTER solution manages heterogeneous environments
including
- multivendor network components,
- multivendor clients and servers that include
Digital, IBM, HP and Sun systems plus PC
desktops, and offers
- secure access to Internet.
B. POLYCENTER offering on OpenVMS(tm) systems is robust.
C. POLYCENTER offerings on DEC OSF/1 AXP (tm) systems
currently available is at critical mass:

performance. Digital offers the ability to run
multiple management applications simultaneously
with no performance degradation.
"For raw performance, I haven't seen anything
faster than POLYCENTER Manager on NetView on
an Alpha AXP system. It blazes! I never even
saw the hourglass when the screens were
changing!" Jeremy Frank, Gartner Group.
- Broad range of commercial quality OSF/1
solutions are now available including advanced
storage management, network management, system
management, security management and
administrative solutions.
- POLYCENTER Manager on NetView(tm) (PNV) is an
industry standard management framework managing
TCP/IP based networks and now managing DECnet
from the same platform. Digital offers special
migration packages for existing customers to
move to PNV.
| - Digital won four top awards at the Enterprise
| Management Summit, which held a "shootout"
| competition on UNIX and client/server
| management. POLYCENTER won awards
| for auto-topology, production
| management, configuration management and
| software distribution. Digital finished
| second in the overall competition by winning
| four out of the thirteen categories,
D. POLYCENTER tools have leadership in storage management
and performance analysis.
| E. POLYCENTER offerings on Windows NT offer leadership
| integrate of system and network management with
| superior graphic user interface for ease of use.
Digital is committed to maintaining the competitive advantage of its
POLYCENTER management offering, focusing on four consistent themes:
1. Continue to expand the range of heterogeneous objects
managed. (e.g. network objects, systems, distributed
applications.)
2. Build a portfolio of Microsoft Windows NT
solutions.
3. Add functionality, increasing the following:
- ease of use
- level of integration across breadth of
management function
- robustness.
4. Include more and more leadership third party solutions
- Continue NetView Association focus
- Acquire and include superior externally
sourced technology and products expanding
the solutions offering.
Customers familiar with the production-quality management
capabilities provided on Digital's OpenVMS VAX systems will be
delighted to see the same robust capabilities on Alpha AXP platform.
In some cases, the OpenVMS VAX product is being ported to the Alpha AXP
platforms, in other cases a new technology solution is being utilized
to benefit the customer. The management tools that customers need in
order to move to Alpha AXP systems are there for DEC OSF/1 AXP and
OpenVMS AXP operating systems, and they are rapidly rolling out on
Windows NT AXP platforms.
The sections following the general POLYCENTER Questions and Answers
provide more detail about each of the suites in the POLYCENTER
portfolio.
Section 1 - Network Management
Section 2 - Storage Management
Section 3 - Configuration/Change Management (Asset Management)
Section 4 - Problem Management
Section 5 - Performance/Capacity Planning/Accounting Management
Section 6 - Automation (Administration and Operations)

POLYCENTER Q & As
Q1 The competition is telling my customer that Digital is
getting out of the network and systems management business.
What should I tell my customer?
A1 Network and system management solutions are a critical
component of Digital's systems business and acceptance
of Alpha AXP products in the market. Management is key
to wide-scale adoption of integrated client-server
computing. Digital's POLYCENTER solution is an integrated,
open approach to managing distributed enterprise systems and
networks based on international standards.
Digital is committed to providing the management capabilities
offered in the POLYCENTER portfolio and extending those
capabilities through direct Digital engineering investment
and through acquisition and/or availability of third party
products.
Q2 How does POLYCENTER strategy fit with Digital's Software
Strategy?
A2 POLYCENTER products implement the management solution for the
open client/server environment. They serve as a foundation
element of Digital's Software Strategy providing the
management of the networks and systems upon which
customers' software applications are running.
Q3 How does POLYCENTER strategy fit within the Management
Framework?
A3 POLYCENTER products are the core of the Management
Framework. They deliver leadership management capabilities,
supply the enterprise management view, and provide
the integration point that brings together other specialized
network, system and data management applications as well as
element managers. This is accomplished with open APIs and
support of international standards.
Q4 What is the relationship of CA-Unicenter for OSF/1 to
POLYCENTER products?
A4 Digital is working with Computer Associates to port
CA-Unicenter to Alpha AXP platform for those customers who are
accustomed to the CA methods of system management commonly
found in IBM mainframe environments. This set of system
management tools will be integrated with POLYCENTER Manager on
NetView.
================================================================================
================================================================================
Q6 How do ManageWORKS and TeMIP relate to POLYCENTER portfolio?
A6 These products are positioned as follows:
ManageWORKS is targeted at the workgroup environment
and manages PC LAN/NOS environments.
The POLYCENTER portfolio includes the ManageWORKS product.
While the POLYCENTER portfolio is targeted broadly at the

================================================================================
SECTION 1: POLYCENTER Network Management 18-Jan-1995
----------------------------------------- -----------
1.1 POLYCENTER NETWORK MANAGEMENT PRODUCT BACKGROUND
POLYCENTER Network Management keeps the network available and
minimizes the impact of downtime on user productivity. The
solution includes capabilities of automatic discovery and mapping,
network performance monitoring, fault and security management. The
POLYCENTER Network Management suite includes:
POLYCENTER Manager on NetView(tm)
[commonly called POLYCENTER NetView, or PNV]
POLYCENTER DECnet Manager on NetView
POLYCENTER PathDoctor
POLYCENTER Network Manager 200/400 and options
HUBwatch(tm) and PROBEwatch are related network management products
from the Networks group, and TeMIP(tm) is a related network management
product targeted at Telecommunications Industry customers and
managers of large-scale voice/data network utilities.
POLYCENTER Manager on NetView and POLYCENTER DECnet(tm) Manager on
NetView, now both available for DEC OSF/1 AXP, are an unbeatable
combination for automated SNMP and DECnet management. POLYCENTER
NetView is the exact same source code are IBM's NetView/6000, also
called NetView for AIX. Both POLYCENTER NetView and NetView/6000
are based on HP's OpenView(tm) and contain its APIs, but have
the advantage of the top-rated, most intuitive user interface
in the industry. These products will provide the next generation
for integrating system and network management applications. The
outstanding performance of these POLYCENTER network management products
has been recognized by industry analysts, such as Gartner Group.
Digital continues its strong commitment to the POLYCENTER
NetView products and the NetView Association, the partnership
of Digital and IBM to attract developers of management applications
to the NetView platform. Over the coming year Digital will focus our
NetView Association efforts on attracting the most competitive
| network management applications to the OSF/1 AXP and Windows NT
| platforms.
1.2: POLYCENTER NETWORK MANAGEMENT PRODUCT STRATEGY
A. PLANNED FUNCTIONALITY & PLATFORM SUPPORT
In addition to the currently shipping OSF/1 product, Digital
| is excited about announcing the comprehensive POLYCENTER
| NetView solution on Windows NT, available this year. This PC-
based network management solution complements the strategy for OpenVMS
systems, which is to manage systems from a PC desktop. Managing
the OpenVMS environment from PNV on Windows NT allows customers to more
productively manage their OpenVMS environments and to enjoy a large
and expanding portfolio of management applications not
available from POLYCENTER Manager 200 and 400 (formerly known
as the DECmcc product family).
B. POLYCENTER NETWORK MANAGEMENT PRODUCT POSITIONING
Digital has committed support of the POLYCENTER Network Manager
200 and 400 product line to assist customers in their migration to
POLYCENTER DECnet Manager on NetView. We will continue to provide
support to customers to assist them in transitioning production
environments while we continue to add new functionality to the
POLYCENTER Manager on NetView portfolio.
In order to address the needs of the Telecommunications industry
and large corporate voice/data network managers, Digital has produced
and continues to aggressively invest in its TeMIP (Telecommunications
Management Information Platform) solution.
POLYCENTER PathDoctor, introduced this year, is first in
providing an interactive network management application tool that
diagnoses the health and performance of the network paths between
two TCP/IP addresses in a network.

================================================================================
1.3: POLYCENTER NETWORK MANAGEMENT Q & As
Q1 What is Digital's commitment to being in the network
management business ? Will this agreement end up like
IBM's agreement to use OpenView ?
A1 Network management solutions are a critical component of
client/server systems, including those using Digital's
Alpha AXP products. Digital and IBM are now jointly offering
the identical leadership network management platform, as a
result of our product development and marketing partnership.
This partnership is built upon an on-going relationship of
shared expertise that is mutually beneficial for both
companies. This relationship makes it is very unlike the
IBM/HP transaction of a one-time source code licensing of
OpenView V3.x three years ago. IBM has used that
technology to create their NetView/6000 product.
In addition to the quality enhancements that IBM has made
to the OpenView product, IBM has also developed a new
GUI that has now won industry awards for its ease of use
through the addition of the Tool Palette, Navigation Tree,
Control Desk, and a robust event handling system.
The fact that IBM has chosen not to enter into another
agreement with HP is indicative of nothing more than
IBM's NetView/6000 being a superior product, and the new
features of OpenView V4.x being largely duplicative of the
features already in NetView/6000.
The Digital-IBM partnership covers joint development, and
enhancement of the NetView/6000 product, along with our jointly
sponsored NetView Association.
Q2 Is there any truth to the rumors that IBM and Digital
have diminished their support for the NetView Association
ISV program?
A2 No, IBM and Digital continue to fully support the NetView
Association, particularly the technical support provided to
associates and to direct customer activities. Further,
the expansion of NetView platforms (OS/2, Windows NT and SUN)
by IBM, Microsoft, and Digital has now succeeded in
providing the largest number of applications on any platform,
per industry analysts (Gartner Group) and consultants
(Brandywine Assoc.) at Interop '94.
Q3 How will POLYCENTER products help my customers manage their
non-Digital network objects (e.g., CISCO routers, SNA
controllers)?
A3 Digital does recognize the importance of being able to
manage all the components in customers' heterogeneous
network environments. That was a key reason for the
adoption of the leading industry-standard management
framework (NetView), which is enabling Digital to grow its
portfolio of third-party network management applications as
fast as possible. Various SNA applications are available
today, and are listed in the Aug '94 issue of the
"NetView Association Catalog". Other applications are
under discussion, but it is not possible to pre-announce
such relationships until all contracting is complete. We
expect to continue expanding the portfolio in FY95.
Q4 When will POLYCENTER Manager on NetView be available for
OpenVMS systems?
A4 The POLYCENTER strategy for managing OpenVMS network
elements has been adjusted to be consistent with the
| overall OpenVMS management strategy. OpenVMS has now
| started shipping the OpenVMS Management Station which
| enables of one or more VMScluster systems from a single
| Windows-based PC. This is the model for OpenVMS system
| management for the future, and will be bundled in v6.2.
| Thus POLYCENTER NetView running under Windows NT also with a
| state-of-the-art user interface is the preferred approach for
| network management of VMS-based environments. This solution
| will allow use of the large and increasing numbers of
| third party network management applications are on UNIX today
| which we expect to move to Windows NT. It is not cost-effective
for this broad base of these vendors to port their applications
to OpenVMS. As a result, customers will have more complete
solutions and options available on UNIX and NT platforms.
POLYCENTER NetView will focus on UNIX and NT and, therefore,
will not be available on OpenVMS AXP.
DECnet and DECnet-managed devices are all manageable using the
POLYCENTER DECnet Manager. This is an optional product on
top of POLYCENTER NetView, which is shipping today on OSF/1,
and next year on NT.
Thus, Digital recommends that OpenVMS network
management be done from a PC platform, specifically
POLYCENTER NetView and DECnet Manager on Windows NT.
Q5 When should customers migrate from DECmcc and MSU?
A5 Customers running POLYCENTER Network Manager 200/400 or
POLYCENTER SNMP Manager 300 (formerly DECmcc and MSU,
respectively) are encouraged to migrate to POLYCENTER
NetView to take advantage of the rapidly growing suite
of industry-leading applications that is available.
TODAY, there are migration packages available for existing
customers to move to POLYCENTER NetView & DECnet Manager
currently available on OSF/1. The price of all the POLYCENTER
NetView & DECnet Manager software licenses is $5,000 (U.S. CLP)
through the end of 1994, when this introductory price ends.
| This is currently a 75% savings ! And, if customers have an
| LPS service contract for DECmcc or MSU, the license price is
| $2,500 (U.S. CLP) ! We suggest that customers either take
| advantage of this offer to go to OSF/1, if possible, or wait
| for the NT offering which will ship early next year. Systems
| with this software pre-loaded are also available at attractive
| prices. This migration price special offer will be available
| next year, but at a higher price.
This allows customers to try POLYCENTER Netview and DECnet
Manager at a very attractive price and still continue
using DECmcc or MSU for as long as desired.
Q6 What is the status of POLYCENTER SNMP Manager 300?
A6 The POLYCENTER SNMP Manager 300 (aka MSU), is no longer
available for sale, but continues to be supported through 1995.
Customers have been notified in writing of this date.
Q7 Will DECmcc be available on DEC OSF/1 AXP or OpenVMS AXP
platforms? Or, has DECmcc been retired?
A7 No. DECmcc as a product will not be available for sale
on OSF/1 AXP or OpenVMS AXP systems; and DECmcc has not
been retired. POLYCENTER NetView is available on OSF/1 AXP
and will be available on Windows NT to meet the needs pre-
viously addressed by DECmcc on OpenVMS VAX and ULTRIX.
POLYCENTER NetView on Windows NT is the recommended solution
for management of an OpenVMS network, along with the new
OpenVMS Management Station on Windows. This solution provides
an integrated, consistent look-and-feel for all OpenVMS
management utilities, such as user account management. We
will work with customers on an individual project basis to
help them migrate to POLYCENTER NetView when they are ready
to do so. In the interim, the DECmcc product family
(now referred to as the POLYCENTER Framework, Network
Manager 200 & Network Manager 400) will continue to be sold
and supported on the OpenVMS VAX and ULTRIX operating systems.
Q8 What is the relationship between the POLYCENTER
Manager on NetView products and TeMIP ?
A8 POLYCENTER NetView is Digital's strategic solution for
managing data networks for client/server environments.
TeMIP is Digital's strategic solution for management of very
large Voice/Data networks particularly found in the Telecom-
munications Industry. TeMIP will continue to be based on
the current EMA (Enterprise Management Architecture) - DECmcc
based kernel for the foreseeable future due to the richness
and robustness of this technology. Over time, TeMIP may
take advantage of POLYCENTER NetView capabilities which
can be applied to the Telecom market. At a minimum, we
envision TeMIP and POLYCENTER NetView will inter-operate.
| Q: What is new in POLYCENTER NetView V3.1 ?
| A: POLYCENTER NetView V3.1 was announced at Interop, September 94.
| Attached below is the "Fact Sheet" on this release, highlighting
| the new features engineered & announced jointly by IBM &
| Digital. These include:
| - multiple database support, so that data can now reside on:
| Oracle, Ingres, Sybase, Informix, Rdb (OSF/1), DB/2 (AIX)
| - customizable to "failover" management responsibility, such
| as due to a shift change or console failure
| - variety of ease of use enhancements:
| enhanced discovery algorithms
| new System Performance Monitoring Tool
| tailorable IP discovery range
| enhanced event configuration
| multiple dynamic event desks
|
| Q: Is there an easy way to order NetView and the hardware I need ?
|
| A: In adddition to the migration discounted software packages
| discussed above, a new offering is now available, that will
| make it easier for users to install and run the products.
| These "Managed Offerings" are packaged as a One-Stop-Shopping
| solution - and includes hardware (Alpha) with the network
| management software already installed. They come in two
| packages - for networks under 200 nodes (Small) and for
| networks under 1000 nodes (Medium). Each of these packages
| are available for:
|
| 1. IP Networks ( PNV + Pathdoctor)
| 2. IP + DECnet Networks ( PNV + PDM + Pathdoctor )
| 3. Migration Customer Packaging ( Same as # 2 w/ special
| pricing for customers who wish to migrate )
|
| Q: Are there Digital applications that compliment NetView, in
| addition to the 3rd party applications available in the
| NetView Association Catalog ?
|
| A: POLYCENTER DECnet Manager for OSF/1 AXP is now available
| as a layered product running with POLYCENTER Manager on NetView.
| POLYCENTER DECnet Manager provides support for devices that use
| DECnet management protocols. DECnet Phase IV, DECnet/OSI,
| DEC bridges, and terminal servers are all supported
| V1.0 has been shipping since June '94. V2.0 is planned to
| ship December 94 and will include enhancements
| to current features as well as fuller DECnet/OSI support.
| V1 is $5,000. V2 is $10,000.
|
| POLYCENTER PathDoctor is an interactive SNMP-based network
| management software diagnostic tool. It assists users in
| evaluating the health and performance of IP routing paths
| between specified TCP/IP address pairs, by using a rules
| library and knowledge of vendor's private SNMP extensions
| to diagnose a number of typical routing problems. PathDoctor
| is particularly adept at determining routing problems and
| inefficiencies for Cisco, Wellfleet, 3Com, Proteon, Digital,
| and IBM routers. $2,000.
|
| HUBwatch is also a POLYCENTER product and has always been
| integrated with MCC. HUBwatch has just become available
| on OSF/1, integrated with NetView, and on DOS/Windows. It
| was shown at Interop, Sept 94, and shipped in October. $2,615
|
| Probewatch is an RMON product that'll be available on OSF/1
| in January '95. This is based on Frontier technology. $3,250
|
| Q: Will NetView be able on Windows NT ? Intel or Alpha ?
|
| A: POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for Windows NT (PNV NT) will be
| available on the Alpha AXP and Intel platforms. This product
| is a full-scale enterprise network manager running in an SNMP
| TCP/IP environment on Windows NT. Unlike our competitors,
| this is *NOT* a DOS based LAN manager that has been ported to
| Windows NT, rather, it is the first 'industrial strength'
| enterprise manager on Windows NT. "Industrial Strength" refers
| to 'Enterprise Management' & having the capability
| to manage from one end of the spectrum to the other.... from
| low-end DOS oriented LANS to high-end SNMP/CMIP WANS...
| again, a heterogeneous, Multivendor distributed environment.
| Our product is not a 'cheap' LAN manager ported from DOS,
| its an Enterprise Manager ported from AIX.
|
| At COMDEX, November 94, Digital announced the Dec 94
| availability of an SDK for developers in the NetView
| Association interested in NT. This product is appealing
| to both DOS and UNIX application vendors, ensuring that NT
| will provide a rich management environment for customer's
| enterprise - both Corporate IP/DECnet networks and LAN
| networks. This product will be available in H195, and ship
| on both Intel and Alpha processors. No pricing is available
| yet, though we expect it to have an attractive price.
|
| When released for general availability in 1H95, POLYCENTER
| NetView for Windows NT will have very similar functionality
| to that of Digital's PNV OSF/1 offering. The user interface
| is being redesigned to take full advantage of the Windows
| platform while preserving the existing user interface that
| makes our UNIX product the leader in the industry. Digital
| anticipates the price of this product will be under $10K.
|
| Q: Will/Is NetView intergrated with Microsoft's SMS (Hermes) ?
| How would you compare them ?
|
| A: PNV NT will be integrated with Microsoft's Systems Management
| Server (SMS) software (code named HERMES) and will be capable
| of importing topology & event information from SMS into NetView
| providing capability for hardware/software inventory management,
| software distribution and installation, application management,
| remote control etc. The integration effort demonstrates a high
| level of cooperation and a commitment between Digital, IBM, and
| Microsoft to integrate industry leading solutions for the
| benefit of our mutual customers.
|
| In November 1993, at Fall COMDEX - Microsoft endorsed the
| NetView port as "Preferred Enterprise Management Solution"...
|
|
| NetView & HERMES (SMS) Focus:
|
| NetView: HERMES (SMS):
| o Enterprise Management o Heterogeneous PC Clients
| -Bridges -DOS
| -Routers -Windows
| -Hubs -Mac
| -Servers -OS/2
| -Clients -NT
| o Integrated Management o Asset Management
|
|
| PNV NT will be integrated with other Digital solutions such
| as POLYCENTER AssetWORKS (PAW) & POLYCENTER DECnet Manager(PDM).
| The POLYCENTER NetView Association is actively recruiting and
| working with critical 3rd party ISVs to port their
| applications to Windows NT.
|
| The Windows NT operating system is very appealing because
| while many users are downsizing, even more are 'upsizing' and
| migrating towards Pentium and Alpha class systems. Windows
| is likely to become the 'common denominator' for users
| seeking continuity from PC Windows to a friendly albeit more
| robust operating system environment, while applications
| developers (looking to penetrate new markets) continue to
| develop more powerful network management solutions requiring
| the combined 'horsepower' of Windows NT and Alpha AXP to manage
| heterogeneous multivendor environments.
|
|
| Same product, same UI, Industry-standard API's,
| Industry-standard integration mechanisms, same databases etc..
| results in decreased training costs for PNV on Alpha nad Intel.
|
|
| Benefits to developers:
|
| - Extends their potential market to Windows NT
| - Start application development today
| - Same integration APIs on UNIX & Windows NT
| - Reduces cost by developing to a single framework
|
|
| Benefits to customers:
|
| - Extends Enterprise Management to the Desktop
| - Single Management solution to address Traditional
| Network devices and PC's
| - Expands choice of Management solutions & applications
| - Focus on business value & management solutions
| available and not on frameworks...
|
|
| PNV NT productivity enhancements let you manage the Network
| instead of managing Windows:
|
| - Streamlined Operations
| - Task-aware User Interface
| - Decreased cost of incremental information
| - Icon prompts
|
|
| Q: What about the OSF DME? Do you expect to license their
| current DME SERVICES? Will you productize the Network
| Management Option (NMO)?
|
| A: Digital continues to believe in many of the concepts that
| DME developed, however the lack of deliverables and market
| acceptance has been a problem. Digital holds a chair
| position of the complaince committee, and continues to be
| active with OSF on DME matters. Digital and IBM will evaluate
| the benefit of the NMO product and integrate some or all of it
| into NetView if that is appropriate. Digital does not plan
| to use the DME services that were released. It is using
| alternatives which meet the customer's needs as of today. If
| DME services gain substantial market acceptance, Digital may
| elect to offer them.
|
| Q: What's the advantage of NetView for network management
| over HP's OpenView? Isn't NetView based on OpenView?
|
| A: POLYCENTER Manager on NetView and NetView 6000 are based on core
| capabilities provided by OpenView. But IBM and Digital are
| providing very significant enhancements over OpenView
| capabilities. Because the APIs are a superset of the OpenView
| APIs, NetView is a richer, more robust SNMP manager. NetView
| has been rated as having the best graphical user interface
| in the industry. There is much more capability to integrate
| ISV applications with NetView through the APIs. The NetView
| Association is a tremendous plus. So are Digital's other
| POLYCENTER products. With ALPHA AXP, performance will be the
| best available. NetView has excellent filtering and
| thresholding features which allow true exception control
| of the network environment. NetView allows for a common
| integration point for both system and network applications.
|
| All of these features ensure that control is better and the
| system is easier to use for network/system management personnel.
| That translates to increased productivity, fewer errors, and
| reduced costs for customers.
|
| POLYCENTER NetView V3.1 FACT SHEET (Final 9/1/94)
|-------------------------------------------------
|
| DIGITAL INTRODUCES POLYCENTER* MANAGER ON NETVIEW** FOR DEC OSF/1***
|
| New Multiple-Database Support-- and much more
|
|
|This new version of POLYCENTER Manager on NetView (V3) for DEC OSF/1
| delivers several capabilities which are not yet available on any other
| network management platform. These include support for multiple relational
|databases for open access to all management information, enhanced
| availability in commercial environments through a unique takeover capability,
| and continued enhancements to the award winning user interface.
| This new version of POLYCENTER Manager on NetView is another step in
| Digital delivering on its POLYCENTER strategy for providing integrated,
| automated management of the multivendor client/server environment. A key
| component of this strategy is partnering with major vendors. The
| POLYCENTER Manager on NetView product is developed in collaboration with
| IBM.
| As part of this effort, Digital, IBM and Microsoft also announced
| plans last November, 1993 for having Microsoft's new SMS - System Management
| Server (Previously codenames Hermes) work with POLYCENTER Manager
| on NetView. This effort is well underway and the necessary
| enabling software will be available by the end of 1994.
| Additionally, plans for porting POLYCENTER Manager on NetView to Windows NT
| are also on schedule. Finally, Digital has continued its work with
| Microsoft's SMS and has announced POLYCENTER AssetWORKS which extends
| SMS's software distribution and inventory capabilities to the multivendor
| UNIX and OpenVMS environments.
| New Multiple Database Support
| Responding to customer and industry requirements for access to multiple
| databases in multivendor networks, Digital has upgraded its POLYCENTER
| Manager on NetView for DEC OSF/1 with the capability to seamlessly
| integrate management data with customers' choice of leading databases.
| Now customers can use their existing relational database product(s) to
| analyze, report and present topology, statistics, and event information
| tailored to their own needs.
| In many customer networks, various applications execute on diverse
| networks, drawing data from Rdb*, Informix***, Ingres***, Oracle***
| and/or SYBASE*** database applications. The new release of POLYCENTER
| Manager on NetView for DEC OSF/1 exports data to these databases.
| It populates this management data repository, with collection
| controlled through its award-winning graphical interface. Using
| this database client/server capability, data can be placed anywhere
| within the enterprise -- and it can be accessed across various sites
| in the enterprise.
| In addition to supporting all of the most popular client/server databases,
| access is provided to all of the critical management data including
| IP topology information, SNMP traps, and SNMP polled data. Previously,
| access was only available to topology information. With open access and
| comprehensive management information, network managers and developers
| now have standard SQL access to use this data in their reports and
| applications. Since these databases support a broad range of clients
| from UNIX to PCs, any desktop can utilize this information.
| New Manager "Take-over" Capability
| Additionally, the new POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for DEC OSF/1 can be
| customized to assume management responsibility from another POLYCENTER
| Manager on NetView. When one network manager is brought down due to a
| shift change, manager console failure, or for providing "follow the sun"
| global coverage, another console can be brought up automatically to
| manage a specific subnet. This new "take-over" function minimizes the
| effects of hardware failures and affords enhanced flexibility to
| accommodate various customers' unique management needs and preferences.
| When used with the new open relational database support, this "take-over"
| feature provides the commercial-strength management capabilities which
| are required for running critical business applications in the multivendor
|client/server environment.
| Enhanced Usability
| The performance, discovery features, and award-winning graphical user
| interface of the POLYCENTER Manager on NetView have been significantly
| improved. Customers will benefit from significant improvements in operational
| performance of non-IP and IP discovery, display, and management. In addition, a
| new Systems Performance Monitoring tool provides monitoring of the
| POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for DEC OSF/1 workstation resources and
| automated commands to correct problems which affect performance.
| New discovery features enable complete customization of a network managers
| domain and extend the range of network architectures which are supported.
| This new release allows the network manager to define the specific
| sub-network of interest by defining ranges of IP addresses in a very
| flexible manner. This allows individual operators to only see those
|devices and network segments for which they are responsible. This version
| also includes the ability to discover, display and support up to 2,000
| interfaces per node. New support for secondary addresses has been added
| which ensures complete coverage for the most creative network architectures
| developed by network managers.
| Enhancements to the award-winning GUI include: multiple dynamic event
| desks, improved algorithms for node placement on the maps, new event card
| layout, menu bar changes and dialog box improvements. These all reduce the
| time required to perform operations and results in increased user productivity.
| Pricing and Availability
|POLYCENTER Manager on NetView for DEC OSF AXP V3.1 is priced at $15,500
|and is orderable now. POLYCENTER DECnet Manager V1.0 is priced at $5000 up to
|December '94, when it goes up to $10,000 for V2.0. PATHDoctor, is priced at

reconfiguration (particularly for customers running databases
over raw partitions), Digital offers Logical Storage Manager
for DEC OSF/1.
For customers requiring high availability the Available Server Environ-
ment (ASE) will be supported on a broader range of platforms. ASE
allows multiple CPUs to be configured using a shared storage bus
(e.g. SCSI 2) and quickly moves the load to an alternate processor in
the event of a processor failure.
Prestoserve(tm) provides dramatic NFS performance improvements
through the use of caching to allow near instantaneous return
to applications - while changes are queued for access to media.
STORAGE MANAGEMENT FOR OpenVMS

archive capabilities, and integrates with the backup utilities of
OpenVMS and RDB products. New processor support for OpenVMS AXP
platforms is currently being released.
StorageWorks Desktop Backup/Archiver for OpenVMS provides PC backup
capabilites to seamlessly integrate backup of DOS, Windows and
Macintosh clients into the VMS environment.
Volume Shadowing for OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS AXP transparently
provides high data availability by replicating data on up to three
disks. It prevents data loss that can result from deterioration of
media storage devices or from controller or interconnect failure.
This prevents storage subsystems from becoming a single point of
failure and interrupting system and business operations.
Volume Shadowing is an implementation of RAID 1 technology, also
known as mirroring.
Digital Internal Use Only
================================================================================
RMS Journaling for OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS AXP is an easy-to-use data
integrity tool that protects data from becoming lost or inconsistent.
It provides methods to undo file modifications, redo file modifications
or recover a single transaction. One, two or all three journaling
methods can be used in an application to protect the integrity of that
application's data.

SECTION 3 POLYCENTER Configuration/Change Management (Asset Management)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
18-Jan-1995
-----------
3.1 POLYCENTER CONFIGURATION MGMT. PRODUCT BACKGROUND
Companies are finding it increasingly difficult to manage the
mix of hardware and software in their diverse and geographically
dispersed computing environments. The explosion of PC's on the
desktop and popularity of distributed client/server environments
have made the management of computing assets more complex, more
time consuming, more expensive, and more important than ever before.
This problem has been recognized by market research companies, too:
META Group (1994) asserts, "The foundation of any systems and
network management tool suite is the underlying inventory database
... must include formalized (automated) processes to control and
manage rapid change ... to clearly maintain configurations and
status information." Gartner Group (1994) maintains, "The power
shift from 'hardware-centric' to 'software-centric'
technology architectures requires users to begin to proactively
manage and optimize their software assets. Faced with increasingly
tight IT budgets, major platform shifts, and chaos in industry
licensing models, software asset management has become an IT
management and organizational priority, rather than merely a
standalone (one-time-only) cost cutting exercise."
If your customer is concerned about the cost and complexity of
building, maintaining, and managing a business-critical network of
PC's and multivendor computers, look to Digital's comprehensive
Configuration/Change Management solutions. The POLYCENTER
Configuration/Change Management products and services simplify
management of hardware and software assets and assure that
end users will find the reliability and just-turn-it-on functionality
they expect on their desktops. The suite includes:
POLYCENTER AssetWORKS
POLYCENTER System Census
POLYCENTER System Census for PC LANs
POLYCENTER Software Distribution
3.2 POLYCENTER CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT PRODUCT STRATEGY
A. PLANNED FUNCTIONALITY & PLATFORM SUPPORT
New in FY95, POLYCENTER AssetWORKS provides the practical solution
for automating configuration and asset management tasks for the
broad range of platforms across the enterprise network. An easy-to-use
central management console provides functions for automated hardware
and software inventory, centralized distribution of new software,
management of shared applications loaded on network servers, remote
troubleshooting and control of PC's and workstations, and network
protocol analysis.
As program announced, POLYCENTER AssetWORKS V1.0 will extend
Microsoft's Systems Management Server (aka Hermes), providing
functionality for the widest range of PC (Windows, MS-DOS,
OS/2, Mac) and enterprise platforms (OpenVMS, ULTRIX, OSF/1, Windows
NT, and Sun OS), across industry leading network protocols (TCP/IP,
DECnet, SNA, IPX, NetBEUI, RAS). In addition, AssetWORKS complies
with industry standards: the Desktop Management Task Force standard
for collecting information from desktop devices (called DMI/MIF) as
well as the SQL industry standard for its database.
Digital will be a Microsoft Authorized Solution Provider for
Microsoft Systems Management Server. Digital's Multivendor Customer
Services organization will complement the Configuration Management
product offerings with a suite of services, including Process
Evaluation, Implementation, and Inventory Management and User
Support Services.
Development of other products in the Configuration Management portfolio
continues. Software Distribution V3.0 recently shipped with support
for distribution to OpenVMS and ULTRIX systems from an OpenVMS AXP
server. In October, 1994, POLYCENTER System Census will ship server,
agent, and Motif user interface that support OpenVMS AXP. POLYCENTER
System Census for PC LANs extends the ability to audit systems to
the PC LAN (Windows consolidator; Windows, MS-DOS, OS/2, and Mac
clients). The two System Census products are integrated and can be
combined into one inventorying solution.
Other FY95 product development work includes the next versions of
POLYCENTER AssetWORKS, with extension of hardware/software platform
management to include other major UNIX platforms (e.g. HP UX, IBM
AIX, and Sun Solaris), integration with POLYCENTER Manager on
NetView for application launch from and event notification to the
PNV console, as well as software metering (usage).
B. POLYCENTER CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT PRODUCT POSITIONING
The POLYCENTER Software Distribution server and clients and POLYCENTER
System Census agents are the mechanisms POLYCENTER AssetWORKS will
use to support OpenVMS systems; therefore POLYCENTER Software
Distribution and POLYCENTER System Census will work seamlessly with
AssetWORKS. This integration of the POLYCENTER Configuration
Management products provides a growth path for customers and gives
them flexibility in choosing a solution which can change to
accommodate their evolving requirements.
PATHWORKS ManageWORKS provides direct, integrated management of both
Novell NetWare and Microsoft LAN Manager environments. ManageWORKS
provides management of NOS services (not configuration management of
the enterprise) and is targeted at the PC LAN/workgroup.
OpenVMS Management Station (aka ARGUS) will provide account management
for one or more OpenVMS cluster systems from a single, Windows-based
PC in Q1 FY95. Future possible enhancements include printer
management and storage management.
Digital's partnership with Microsoft (Microsoft System Management
Server) will provide the industry leading configuration management
solution. With the planned integration with POLYCENTER Manager on
NetView, Digital's relationship with IBM (NetView), and the
comprehensive suite of services, Digital will provide one of the
strongest system and network management solutions in the industry.

3.3 POLYCENTER CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT Q & A's
Q1 What benefits does Configuration Management provide for a
customer?
A1 The computing environment in most organizations is complex and
growing more difficult to manage. More than 75% of the cost of
software ownership comes after the purchase of the software.
The POLYCENTER Configuration Management products reduce the
largest cost of software ownership by providing solutions that
manage software and hardware auditing, software distribution
and installation, and software upgrades -- whether to the PC
desktop or across the enterprise.
There are other applications. "Shelfware" or underutilized/non-
utilized, obsolete software has become a problem for many
organizations. While it is absolutely essential to provide what
is needed, it is also important to make sure that valuable
resources are not consumed in having software on the wrong
systems or in the wrong locations. Likewise, inventory
information makes it possible for customers to negotiate the
appropriate volume discounts for centralized software purchases.
Compliance with software license requirements is another problem
that can take a lot of time and effort to track.
Digital's Configuration Management products and services provide
the solution to address each phase of configuration management.
| Q: How does Digital define Configuration Management?
| A: Digital views Configuration Management as having five
| complementary pieces: software product evaluation and selection,
| software distribution and installation, software licence
| management, software and hardware inventory tracking, and
| user support. POLYCENTER AssetWORKS in conjunction with
| services being offered by Digital's Mulivendor Customer Services
| organization help address each of the areas of Configuration
| Management and give companies the powerful tools needed to
| manage their software and hardware assets.
|
Q3 What is Digital's Configuration Management strategy for the
future?
A3 POLYCENTER AssetWORKS represents Digital's strategy for Con-
figuration Management: provide an integrated suite to address
customer problems; partner with leading vendors to provide
complete solutions for complex, multivendor environments; and
protect existing customer investment.
We will drive to tighter integration with other POLYCENTER
products and suites to provide centralized and comprehensive
networked system management which addresses the problems our
customers encounter in their multivendor, multiplatform
computing environments.
Customers have been able to purchase good solutions via
POLYCENTER System Census and POLYCENTER Software Distribution
on OpenVMS. Now these solutions are even better with expanded
coverage and functionality. System Census and Software
Distribution will interoperate with POLYCENTER AssetWORKS, so
customers can begin to address their configuration management
problems today and be ready to take advantage of future
capabilities from Digital.
| Q: What is POLYCENTER AssetWORKS?
| A: POLYCENTER AssetWORKS is the recently announced layered
| product from Digital. It is a simple-to-use yet comprehensive
| solution for managing assets in small, single LAN or large
| multinational enterprise-wide WAN IT environments.
| Specifically AssetWORKS provides the ability to inventory all
| hardware and software in a networked environment, distribute
| software across the network using a simple graphical drag and
| drop process, create queries to regularly examine the status of
| the inventoried assets, troubleshoot networked PC's with help
| desk functionality, and generate valuable management reports
| from the inventory information and software distribution job
| status. AssetWORKS is based on Microsoft's System Management
| Server (SMS).
| Q: What problems will AssetWORKS help me solve?
| A: The computing environment in most organizations is complex and
| growing more difficult to manage. More than 75% of the cost of
| software ownership comes after the purchase of the software.
| The tasks of distributing and installing software, upgrading
| software, tracking hardware and software assets, and providing
| the ongoing user support are the largest costs in the life cycle
| of software. POLYCENTER AssetWORKS reduces those costs
| by providing an integrated asset management solution that
| allows the system manager to manage the widest array of
| platforms, from PC's to industry leading UNIX platforms,
| from a simple user interface.
| Q: What platforms and network protocols does AssetWORKS support?
| A: AssetWORKS supports the most platforms in the industry.
| From an NT server, AssetWORKS supports DOS, Windows, OS/2,
| Mac, NT, OpenVMS, SunOS, OSF/1, and Ultrix agents. In addition,
| AssetWORKS will very shortly support HP-UX, IBM AIX, and
| Sun Solaris. The network protocols supported include
| Netware 3.X, LAN Manager 2.X, Pathworks, Windows for Workgroup,
| Windows NT Server, TCP/IP, DECnet, IPX/SPX, ISDN, SNA, and X.25.
| Q: How does AssetWORKS fit into the rest of the POLYCENTER
| portfolio?
| A: AssetWORKS is being integrated with the network management
| product POLYCENTER Netview for Windows NT. When the POLYCENTER
| Netview NT product is released, this tight bi-directional
| integration will allow for a user of either AssetWORKS
| or POLYCENTER Netview to move smoothly from one product to
| the other thus providing the first truely integrated
| network and system management set of products to address the
| management problem in a heterogeneous enterprise-wide network.
|
| Additionally Digital offers a number of other products under
| the POLYCENTER brandname that address other management
| areas, for example, Storage Management, Fault Management,
| Security Management, and Performance Management.
| As solutions in these areas move to the NT operating system
| they too will be integrated with POLYCENTER Netview.
|
| Q: What is the relationship between Digital and Microsoft?
|
| A: Digital has worked closely with Microsoft to develop Digital's
| POLYCENTER AssetWORKS product and to support the development of
| Microsoft's SMS product. In addition, Digital is intending to
| resell Microsoft's SMS product as part of POLYCENTER
| AssetWORKS and on a stand alone basis.
|
| Q: What value has Digital added to Microsoft's SMS product?
|
| A: With POLYCENTER AssetWORKS Digital has extended SMS in three
| significant directions. AssetWORKS added support for
| SunOS, OSF/1, OpenVMS, and Ultrix clients. Support for
| HP-UX, IBM AIX, and Sun Solaris will be released shortly.
| Secondly, AssetWORKS has added the ability to quickly and easily
| generate management reports from the inventory information and
| job status. In addition, the integration between AssetWORKS
| and POLYCENTER Netview has created the first enterprise level
| integrated network and system management solution.
|
| Q: What other things is Digital doing in Configuration Management?
|
| A: Digital has a set of services that complement the POLYCENTER
| AssetWORKS product to provide the full Configuration Management
| solution to the customer. Those services are part of the
| Software Utility Program in the Multivendor Customer Services
| group. They support software evaluation and acquisition and
| provide user support for problems with software applications.
Q4 What is PLS (POLYCENTER Licensing System)?
A4 PLS is a second generation, client-server license management
system that will be replacing our current licensing system,
LMF (License Management Facility).
LMF was designed and built to meet a very simple core set of
requirements that met the needs of the industry at that time.
Since that time, massive changes have occurred in
how software is implemented and an overwhelming need to
manage software as an asset has developed resulting in
the need to move to the more advanced PLS technology.
PLS was built to satisfy the needs of the three primary areas of
the software business -- development, distribution, and
implementation and was designed with the future computing
paradigms in mind. That is, distributed, client/server,
heterogeneous, scalable and flexible. It can satisfy the needs
of the software developer, by providing the best protection for
their products, while allowing complete implementation
flexibility for the end user.
PLS's initial target market is to platform providers (operating
system vendors, software developers and distributors. PLS is
a base technology and perceived as something that has more
value to these audiences than to end users. To end user
groups that see software asset management as a priority, PLS
is also significant to their future directions and
purchases.
Q5 What is the current status of PLS?
A5 During the past year, we successfully negotiated a contract
with an industry leading software developer/platform provider
for them to license and implement Digital's PLS. We are also in
discussions with other vendors for similar deals. This has
provided the PLS program with the incentive needed to continue
its work and bring this technology to the industry. PLS is now
funded and focused on implementing PLS on Digital's three major
platforms: Window NT, OSF/1, and OpenVMS. These implementations
are currently anticipated to take place during the latter
part of FY95.

| DIGITAL ANNOUNCES POLYCENTER[TM] AssetWORKS[TM] V1.0
| ====================================================
|
| A Configuration Management Solution That Puts Your Hardware
| and Software to Work for You
|
|
|Whether you are tracking your computer resources or updating configurations to
|match your users' changing needs, POLYCENTER AssetWORKS allows you to quickly
|perform the configuration management tasks required in a multivendor
|environment.
|RESULT: you can gain control over your hardware and software assets, optimize
|your technology investment, and focus on strategic resource planning.
|Control the Hidden Costs of Client/Server Computing
|---------------------------------------------------
|Studies of client/server computing environments suggest that as much as 76% of
|an organizations software costs are attributable to distribution,
|administration, and support. Only 24% of software costs are attributable to the
|direct cost of software licenses and upgrade fees.
|These sizable indirect costs often result from a lack of systematized
|configuration management controls and a reliance on labor-intensive tracking
|and distribution methods. Now, the days of manual labor are over. With
|POLYCENTER AssetWORKS you have an automated, cost-effective way to handle your
|configuration management functions from a convenient, central location.
|Advantage, AssetWORKS
|--------------------------------
|AssetWORKS is based on the Microsoft[R] Systems Management Server (SMS) and
|offers all the benefits of SMS and more. These benefits include administration
|capabilities at one or more sites throughout an enterprise network and remote
|PC maintenance and troubleshooting.
|The advantage of using AssetWORKS is that it offers complete management
|reporting capabilities and supports an array of hardware and operating systems,
|including a variety of UNIX[R]- based systems. These added features provide you
|with the full coverage you need in a multiplatform environment.
|THE BENEFITS...
|...Track Down Your Hardware and Software
|----------------------------------------
|From a central location using a single database, AssetWORKS automatically
|collects hardware and software configuration data, distributes applications and
|upgrades, and prints management reports. You can manage remote and local
|software and hardware, no matter how dispersed and varied your network. All
|functions can be performed from a single console that uses a Windows[TM]
|graphical user interface-- an easy-to-use tool that quickly increases your
|productivity.
|...Make Your Assets Work Overtime, Not You
|------------------------------------------
|Inventory, software distribution, and reporting functions are completely
|integrated to quickly provide the information access and control you need. For
|example, sitting at a Windows NT[R] station, you can drag and drop software
|packages to be installed on DEC[TM] OSF/1[R], Windows, SunOS[R], Macintosh[R],
|or MS-DOS[R] systems (to name just a few). Then, when the upgrades are
|complete, you can view the updated inventory information in an easy-to-read
|report.
|These integrated capabilities result in better resource utilization, improved
|inventory management, more efficient upgrade planning, and enhanced service to
|your users--all of which help you do your job better, faster.
|...Centralized Management, Distributed Control
|----------------------------------------------
|You can combine centralized management of the enterprise with distributed,
|local control for remote branches or departments. This allows you to delegate
|asset management tasks to best suit your business. For example, a system
|manager at a central site can distribute software to any networked desktop
|system, or the distribution can be performed from a local site server to
|desktop systems on the local LAN.
|...Optimize Your Investment in Hardware and Software Resources
|--------------------------------------------------------------
|With AssetWORKS, you can maximize your technology investment by:
|o Redeploying assets as your organizational and business needs
| change.
|o Managing the entire software upgrade process, from distributing
| client/server applications to updating inventory databases to
| reporting.
|o Understanding your total configuration needs, so you can
| negotiate better volume pricing and service contracts.
|o Providing more effective support to your user community.
|Because the software automates routine configuration management and provides
|up-to-date information about your assets, you can always make the most informed
|decisions about your resources.
|...Streamline Your Software Distribution
|----------------------------------------
|Software distribution across the enterprise has never been easier. You simply
|drag and drop software applications, called packages, onto your target systems.
|To streamline software distribution, you can create sets of target systems
|and/or sets of applications, then perform multiple upgrades with a single click
|of the mouse. This allows you to distribute standard configurations and
|application sets, which helps to reduce support requirements.
|...Plan for Success
|-------------------
|With AssetWORKS, upgrade planning is a straightforward task. You no longer need
|to ask, "What systems do I have and how are they deployed?" or "What software
|has changed and when did it change?" All the information you need is stored in
|a common database that is automatically updated every time your hardware or
|software is upgraded. No more guesswork, no more confusion, no more relying on
|someones hazy memory.
|You can quickly survey your system configuration data to determine what
|prerequisites or hardware to update before a software upgrade. This helps
|minimize any user downtime or inconvenience as a result of an incomplete
|upgrade and helps you schedule upgrades quickly and efficiently.
|...Flexible, Comprehensive Reports
|----------------------------------
|You can print valuable management reports for both hardware and software
|assets. For example, you can quickly produce preformatted reports that contain
|the following information:
|o System inventory
|o Software, by system
|o System, by software
|o Job status
|Many other inventory and job reports are also available.
|All configuration data is consolidated and organized in an SQL database that
|gives you the reporting flexibility you need. Report queries are preformatted
|and ready to use, and you can modify them as you wish. You can also create your
|own queries to find just the information you need.
|...Scalable to Meet Your Changing Needs
|---------------------------------------
|AssetWORKS is designed to meet your needs, especially as your networks grow and
|change. It is equally effective on a PC LAN with fewer than 50 PCs as on an
|enterprise-wide network consisting of multiple WANs and LANs.
|...A Simple Client/Server Solution
|----------------------------------
|AssetWORKS has two main components: a site server and an administrators
|console. The site server, based on Windows NT Server software, contains the
|configuration database and any software to be distributed. For load balancing
|and scalability, one or more helper servers, distribution servers, or database
|servers can also be used. The administrators console, based on Windows NT
|Workstation software, provides the graphical user interface to perform all
|management tasks. The administrators console can run on the site server or on a
|separate station.
|Each target client system uses an inventory collection component and an
|installation component to gather configuration data and perform software
|installations and upgrades. These components are transparent to users. Audits
|are conveniently scheduled to avoid user conflicts and minimal desktop
|resources are required.*
|* No resident memory is required for inventory and distribution. For remote PC
|help desk troubleshooting, a small TSR must be loaded during the session.
|...Support for a Broad Range of Hardware and Software
|-----------------------------------------------------
|You can collect information from and perform remote software installations on
|the following desktop systems:
|o MS-DOS
|o Windows
|o Windows NT
|o OS/2
|o Apple[R] Macintosh
|o OpenVMS
|o DEC OSF/1
|o SunOS
|o AIX *
|o Solaris *
|o HP-UX *
|o ULTRIX
|* Soon to be released.
|AssetWORKS also supports the following networked server
|environments:
|o NetWare 3.x
|o LAN Manager 2.x
|o PATHWORKS
|o Windows for Workgroups
|o Windows NT Server
|It supports LANs based on the Microsoft SMB protocol and Novell NetWare.
|Supported network environments also include:

SECTION 4. POLYCENTER Problem Management 18-Jan-1995
---------------------------------------- -----------
4.1 POLYCENTER PROBLEM MANAGEMENT PRODUCT BACKGROUND
The inability to manage to service-level requirements (e.g.,
availability, response time) is presenting a major obstacle for
customers trying to migrate to client-server. The POLYCENTER Problem
Management portfolio is built on some very successful products that
customers have been using to meet these requirements in their
commercial OpenVMS systems. Digital continues to move forward in
evolving this set of products and services to address the requirements
of the heterogeneous client-server environments of the 90s.
In order to maintain service levels, Problem Management products
support the full lifecycle of detecting, isolating, and correcting
faults. The portfolio includes:
POLYCENTER System Watchdog (PSW)
POLYCENTER Console Manager (PCM)
TARGET->ALERT
POLYCENTER Console Manager and POLYCENTER System Watchdog
products consolidate overall monitoring, problem detection
and resolution for today's client/server environments. These
products continue to enjoy high customer acceptance, with over
14,000 consoles being managed by POLYCENTER Console Manager
(includes VAXcluster Console System), and over 10,000 issued
POLYCENTER System Watchdog licenses.
4.2 POLYCENTER PROBLEM MANAGEMENT PRODUCT STRATEGY
A. PLANNED FUNCTIONALITY & PLATFORM SUPPORT
POLYCENTER Console Manager -
The latest release of PCM (V1.5) is available now. PCM V1.5
adds support for new platforms, adds new features and
functions, unifies the console management product set across
multiple platforms. PCM V1.5 runs on DEC OSF/1 AXP, OpenVMS AXP,
OpenVMS VAX, and ULTRIX RISC platforms and can manage those platforms
plus HP-UX, IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, and any other platform that has a
standard console port. One of the main new features is an up-to-date
Graphic User Interface making it easier to define events, scan for
critical status, and have corrective action taken automatically.
Other main features are increased capacity (up to 200 managed devices),
and better integration with PSW and POLYCENTER Scheduler.
PCM V1.5 also replaces VAXcluster Console System on OpenVMS
thereby providing customers with the ability to implement a
unified console management environment. Migration aids are
provided and licenses migrate automatically for customers who
have service contracts.
In FY95, PCM development will focus on determining needs for
other platforms (e.g., Windows NT).
POLYCENTER System Watchdog-
The latest version of PSW (V2.2) is currently available. It
supports DEC OSF/1 AXP, OpenVMS AXP. OpenVMS VAX, ULTRIX RISC, and
ULTRIX VAX servers. PSW supports agents on these platforms plus
systems running SunOS, HP-UX, and AIX operating systems.
In FY95, PSW development will focus on determining needs for
agents on other platforms.
B. POLYCENTER PROBLEM MANAGEMENT PRODUCT POSITIONING
TARGET->ALERT -
Digital recommends Target Systems' TARGET->ALERT for
guaranteed notification capabilities (e.g., notification with
acknowledgment via satellite pager when PSW detects a fault).
Digital has signed an agreement with Target Systems to
distribute, support, and enhance the DECalert product, which
provides industry-leading notification capabilities. Target
Systems is now providing remedial support to all existing
DECalert customers as well as working with Digital Field on
new sales opportunities. TARGET->ALERT currently runs on
OpenVMS VAX platform. Digital is working with Target Systems on plans
for them to support additional platforms.
Digital's Problem Management has more to offer customers
than the competition. Digital can better meet customer needs to cover
problem management across their diverse technologies of
client/server platforms. For example, POLYCENTER Console manager
allows management of up to 200 systems through any vendor's RS232
console port, and has the flexibility of allowing creation of
monitoring profiles for any vendor or customer-unique messages.
The functional integration of products across problem and operations
management -- such as POLYCENTER System Watchdog, POLYCENTER Console
Manager, and POLYCENTER Scheduler -- offers more cross-product
cooperation and integration than for comparable competitive
products, and hence more potential productivity gain in the
customer's IT department. Also, Digital's concurrent license
pricing structure for Console manager allows a better match of price
to the complexity of the systems installation: Pricing is based on
number of system managed rather than the power of the system that
hosts the POLYCENTER Console Manager product.

4.3 POLYCENTER PROBLEM MANAGEMENT Q & A's
Q1 What does Digital provide for Help Desk/Trouble Ticketing?
A1 Digital recognizes that help desk is a critical need in IT
Staffs' efforts to automate the problem management process.
Digital is investigating industry leading help desk solutions,
considering possible business relationships while evaluating
ways of integrating help desk operation with other components
of a Problem Management solution.
Q2 What devices can be managed with the POLYCENTER Console Manager?
A2 POLYCENTER Console Manager will support any device on any
platform as long as that device sends ASCII data over an RS232
line, has an EIA console port, and supports XON/XOFF and I/O
buffering.
Q3 In what way does Digital's POLYCENTER Console Manager
help customers deal with today's Client/Server environment?
A3 POLYCENTER Console Manager is a state-of-the-art tool for
today's Problem Management environment. The tools used to deal
with traditional consoles and data centers operation were not
designed to deal with such factors as:
* Increasing order of magnitude of numbers of systems needing
management. Servers can easily number in the hundreds while
traditional computing rooms more typically dealt with tens of
systems. POLYCENTER Console Manager is intended to
consolidate monitoring and action of up to 200 servers,
allowing better use of operations staff time.
* Increasing dispersion of systems. Today, many servers are
deployed remotely without local IT staff. POLYCENTER Console
Manager allows remote operation as well as in-data.
* Increasing variety of technology. One or two types of vendor
computers equipment in the data center were common. Today,
IT departments must deal with many operating systems and
hardware platform combinations in servers. POLYCENTER
Console Manager only requires a RS232 console port as a
common base for console consolidation.

SECTION 5. POLYCENTER Performance/Capacity Planning/Accounting Mgmnt.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
18-Jan-1995
-----------
5.1 POLYCENTER PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT/CP PRODUCT BACKGROUND
Performance management, capacity planning (CP), and accounting
| management monitor and advise on system and network performance to
ensure availability and enable resource planning. This suite of
the POLYCENTER portfolio benefits customers by optimizing current
IT investment, increasing productivity of systems support staff,
and supporting reliable and predictable system and applications
response for end users. Product family members are:

| POLYCENTER Application Trace SDK for OSF/1
POLYCENTER Performance Monitor for UNIX centralizes UNIX system
performance management, providing monitoring for distributed,
heterogeneous UNIX systems. From one screen, the system manager
can quickly analyze and react to issues that affect performance,
making better use of computer resources and alerting users when
problems arise.
POLYCENTER Performance Advisor provides recommendations for
attaining improved system performance. It accomplishes this by
providing "monitoring" and "expert advisor" functions. Both
realtime and historical trends can be represented through
reports, graphs, or GUI display.
POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector for OpenVMS collects critical
pieces of system data on user-defined schedules for use with the
POLYCENTER Performance Advisor and the POLYCENTER Capacity Planner.
POLYCENTER Capacity Planner uses system data to determine system
performance levels for various workloads and configurations. It
evaluates the impact of any changes to the configuration or
workload on the performance level. Client/server and LAN component
prediction is available on OpenVMS VAX and AXP platforms. Similar UNIX
functionality is available as a service.
DECtrace is a layered product on OpenVMS operating system. It monitors
the performance of any application -- most notably TP and database
applications. Critical middleware software such as RDB, ACMS, DBMS,
DECforms, DEC Rally, SmartStar, and NOMAD have been instrumented
with DECtrace calls to provide customers with in-depth analysis of
their transaction processing and database processing. This provides
performance characterization for tuning and helps plan for future
resource requirements.
A Software Developer's Kit (SDK) that provides DECtrace-like functions
is available on the OSF/1 operating system under the name POLYCENTER
Application Trace SDK for OSF/1. It contains a data collector,
formatting for ORACLE and UFS (UNIX File System), and a detail report
function. This kit provides application and layered product
developers with the capability required to effectively instrument
and debug their instrumentation. A future release will provide
complete Trace capabilities to analyze and tune the performance of
these instrumented applications.
POLYCENTER Performance Solution remains a key part of Digital's
management offering. Its key components, POLYCENTER Performance
Advisor and POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector continue to hold
a leadership position for system performance measurement on OpenVMS
platforms. Digital has over 30,000 customer systems being monitored
for performance. That information is being utilized by over 10,000
POLYCENTER Performance Advisors and by over 1,000 POLYCENTER Capacity
Planner modules.
5.2. POLYCENTER PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT/CP PRODUCT STRATEGY
A. PLANNED FUNCTIONALITY & PLATFORM SUPPORT
In support of customers' ever-changing multiplatform environment,
Digital is exploring collection of performance data on other UNIX
platforms. The goal is to provide end-to-end system and application
performance management for client/server, distributed configurations.
The implementation of POLYCENTER Performance Advisor's expert system
capability is under way for DEC OSF/1.
The current version of the POLYCENTER Capacity Planner product runs
on OpenVMS VAX and AXP systems. The Capacity Planner continues to work
with the Data Collector (V2.1) from the POLYCENTER Performance
Solution for OpenVMS. An OSF/1 version of the capacity planner is
available as a consulting service offering.
DECtrace for OpenVMS and the POLYCENTER Application Trace SDK for
OSF/1 has recently been acquired by ORACLE. Digital will continue to
sell these products and is currently exploring opportunities with
ORACLE for cooperative development and porting. This alliance
proliferates the trace functionality in the database marketplace and
supports Digital's strategy to provide end-to-end performance
measurement, value added performance applications, based on the
Trace technology.
Digital's POLYCENTER Accounting Chargeback for OpenVMS provides
the basics in resource accounting and billing for both the
VAX and AXP platforms.

5.3. POLYCENTER PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT/CP Q & A's
Q1 Is there any difference between the OpenVMS and UNIX offerings?
A1 In performance, the OpenVMS applications provide monitoring and
an "advisor" rules base that assists performance analysts in
detecting and correcting performance problems. The UNIX
offering currently provides only monitoring. Digital is
working on providing a Performance Advisor capability on DEC OSF/1
AXP platforms by mid-year 1995.
In capacity planning, DEC OSF/1 AXP system capacity planning is
provided through Digital Consulting Services, part number
QS-P76AA-5Z.
Q2 What about Digital's capability to support application performance
monitoring? Mission critical applications are not necessarily
confined to one CPU box.
A2 Digital's DECtrace application allows customers to instrument
their OpenVMS and OSF/1 applications for extensive application
performance monitoring. In addition, critical middleware
applications such as RDB and ACMS have been instrumented with
DECtrace to provide customers in-depth analysis of their
transaction processing and database processing.
Q3 How does "application" performance and "system" performance
work together to provide complete performance coverage?
A3 Digital provides strong performance products that collectively
provide the beginning of end-to-end performance. For example,
POLYCENTER Performance Advisor provides necessary system performance
information and multiple DECtrace data collectors can support
applications that are implemented across multiple CPUs.
================================================================================
SECTION 6. POLYCENTER Automation (Administration and Operations)
----------------------------------------------------------------
18-Jan-1995
-----------
6.1. POLYCENTER AUTOMATION PRODUCT BACKGROUND

SECTION 7. POLYCENTER Security Management 18-Jan-1995
----------------------------------------- -----------
7.1 POLYCENTER SECURITY MANAGEMENT PRODUCT BACKGROUND
Today's evolving and widely distributed business and computing
environments have introduced a multitude of complex security
challenges which pose significant threats to a critical business
asset i.e. INFORMATION. For example the F.B.I. estimate that IT.
security breaches cost companies between three to five billion dollars.
An organization's critical business assets: people, property,
information, and reputation, demand comprehensive security coverage.
Digital's broad portfolio of security products and related consulting
services were developed and built on providing security for Digital's
own internal business environment with over 800 locations globally,
over 80,000 employees currently and the world's largest private data
network of its kind. The POLYCENTER security management suite includes:
POLYCENTER Security Intrusion Detector (PSID)
POLYCENTER Security Compliance Manager (PSCM)
POLYCENTER Security Reporting Facility (PSRF)
DEC SecurityGate
Firewall Service
POLYCENTER Security Compliance Manager (formerly known as DECinspect
Compliance Manager) products allow system managers to implement a
baseline level of security in their networked computing environments.
The first line of defense is to implement security policies across
the network and ensure that all systems remain in compliance.
PSCM products address this need while reducing the overhead required
to manage the network.
POLYCENTER Security Intrusion Detector provides realtime security
monitoring to detect any suspicious or hostile activity caused by
malicious hackers or inexperienced users and initiates counter-measures
in response to potential security violations in real time. In addition
to detection, PSID can notify system management personnel.
POLYCENTER Security Reporting Facility consolidates enterprise-wide
security information for systems running either the POLYCENTER
Security Compliance Manager or the POLYCENTER Security Intrusion
Detector. This makes it possible to view current and historical
information. PSRF supports a hierarchical reporting structure that
combines data which allows the building of a security management
structure that fits the organization, regardless of its size.
The introduction of the Internet has increased the importance of
secure gateways. Digital has taken the lead with the recent
announcement of a security offering specifically for Internet,
Firewall Service (formerly known as SEAL); and DEC
SecurityGate, a firewall applications for DECnet Phase IV.
Digital's Firewall Service provides connectivity to and from the
internet through a number of secure proxies or application
gateways. These application gateways provide secure use of
favorite internet applications such as: E-mail, FTP, Telnet,
and World Wide Web (Mosaic) news and hand held authentication.
7.2 POLYCENTER SECURITY MANAGEMENT PRODUCT STRATEGY
A. PLANNED FUNCTIONALITY & PLATFORM SUPPORT
Digital continues to develop the POLYCENTER suite of products. The
strategy is to :
- Enhance the User Interface
- Expand platform coverage
- Enhance the performance.
POLYCENTER Security Compliance Manager for DEC OSF/1 AXP, OpenVMS AXP,
and Solaris 2 was released in March of this year, with support
for Novell NetWare available in September. This further
strengthens our multivendor support which already included IBM
AIX, HP-UX, SunOS, ULTRIX (VAX and RISC) and OpenVMS VAX platforms.
POLYCENTER Security Intrusion Detector, is available for OpenVMS,
ULTRIX, SUNOS and OSF/1 operating systems.
POLYCENTER Security Reporting Facility is available on OpenVMS VAX
operating system.
B. POLYCENTER SECURITY MANAGEMENT PRODUCT POSITIONING
For fortune 2000 companies who are looking to secure their
Information Systems in a heterogeneous environment, Digital's
POLYCENTER Security Tools and Services provide comprehensive
security, at a very competitive price. These tools are used to
protect Digital's own network the largest private network
in the world. Unlike the tools available from other ISV's Digital's
products are backed by the same service and support organization
with over thirty years experience.

7.3 POLYCENTER SECURITY MANAGEMENT Q & A
Q1 How do POLYCENTER security products differ from the secure
operating systems that Digital produces?
A1 Digital's POLYCENTER security products are layered software that
work with the respective operating systems. They do not require
"secure" versions of the operating system. Secure versions of
the operating system are designed for specific environments that
require special protection for even getting into a system. These
are used for some government and national defense areas. The
POLYCENTER Security family is designed to help customers implement
their computer security policy (POLYCENTER Security Compliance
Manager), monitor the implementation (POLYCENTER Security Reporting
Facility), and additionally detect and/or take counter measures to
intrusion efforts (POLYCENTER Security Intrusion Detector).
Q2 What does the POLYCENTER Security Intrusion Detector do that the
POLYCENTER Security Compliance Manager does not do?
A2 Both products perform different but complementary functions.
The POLYCENTER Security Intrusion Detector can be considered
as a dynamic tool with the specific function of detecting
possible intrusions in real time and initiating counter measures.
The POLYCENTER Security Compliance Manager checks for
adherence to a security policy and reports on variances from the
policy and provides lockdown scripts to correct instances
of non-compliance. The POLYCENTER Security Compliance Manager
is normally run periodically while the Intrusion Detector is
run continually. For truly effective computer security
(outside of secured operating systems), both are desirable.
Q3 Why is multivendor support not consistent across the
POLYCENTER Security products ?
A3 We believe that the customer must first define a security policy,
the minimum level of compliance to the policy, and then
have a means to implement this policy. That is why we have
concentrated on covering all of the strategic platforms with the
POLYCENTER Security Compliance Manager. However we are aware
of customer's needs in relation to the Intrusion Detector and
Reporting Facility and are planning to increase the platform
coverage for these products in a future release.
Q4 I believe there are some Consulting Services available to
help in the deployment of these security tools ?
A4 We have proven consulting services built on providing security
for our own internal network one the largest in the world. The
POLYCENTER Security Review Service identifies risks and
recommends corrective actions. The POLYCENTER Baseline SECURstart
Service helps you set a security policy and define the minimum
security settings for organization. POLYCENTER Baseline Security
Management Service helps in the installation and implementation
of a security baseline in your network.
