6205.0. "Problem with Channelworks mib - Customer needs resolved" by SPANKY::WALSH () Tue Jan 03 1995 15:52
Hello,
MCC V1.3 (EMS) VMS 5.5-2 UCX V3.1 VAXstation 4000-60 40Meg Memory.
I am having a problem with querying channelworks bridges snmp agent
with MCC. I get the infamous MCC-E-NOENTITY , no corresponding entity
instance exists error message with some of the variables within the
MIB. For details, look at the log I have provided below.
The Channelworks bridge mib LCCOMMON.mib and LCBRIDGE.mib were
sucessfully compiled and loaded into the dictionary. I also went in
and verified using the DAP utility that they are there. I have
provided a log of what's in the dictionary for the first few entries
that give the MCC-E-NOENTITY , no corresponding entity instance exists
error message for the mib variables that MCC barfs on :>)
The Channelworks product is sold by Digital, but the vendor that
designs the product is Lancity for those who don't know. I had an
engineer in LKG hook up a Channelworks bridge on the easynet so that I
could "walk the mib" with NETview to see if it barfs. NETview did not
barf and returned all the variables and their associated values quite
nicely and was extensively easier to walk the mib (point and click)
verses the MCC commands from the fcl. The Digital engineer, Bob
Vaillancourt was also gracious enough to query it from SNMPc and
everything works great with the mib.
However, customer cannot move to NETview in near future and is not
willing to. MCC provides the functionality that he needs today. But
desparately needs the problem resolved. I have researched this as much
as I can and am looking for some answers as to resolve the issues with
the MIB. This particular MIB is very important in managing the
Channelworks BOX as LANcity designed the box without a console
interface. All configuration changes are done through the LANcity mib.
Any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Mike Walsh

Here's the log of the DAP commands for the dictionary. Everything
appears to be in the dictionary. I only logged the first few that we causing
the MCC machine to barf. I am sure the others appear to be defined correctly
in the dictionary as well.

I just had a look at LCCOMMON mib : all the faulty attributes are
of enumeration type. With this kind of attributes, the MCC-E-NOENTITY
message means that a value out of the enumeration list is sent back
by the agent.
More than this, all those variables are used only to SET a specific
value allowing a change of the device status ( by putting a "1" in
the corresponding attribute ). I'm quite sure that the default
value is different from "1", and as this default value is not defined
in the values allowed by the enumeration datatype, mcc rejects it.
If my asumption is correct, the mcc behaviour is just normal and
the mib itself should be modified. If the bridge is still reachable
on the net, try to check the actual value returned by Netview.
Note that Netview does not reject a value outside the enumeration
list because there is no check against a "dictionary".
Just a guess ...
Guy.
