6183.0. "Monitoring Exporting" by SNOTTY::BARRY (Ploppy Sir, Son of Ploppy) Thu Nov 24 1994 11:43

Hi All,

Another question for you all (I hope this hasn't been mentioned
before !!) :

I currently have the exporter exporting data for 9 intersite
links on a customer network. These links are interfaces on
CISCO routers.

We use this data to produce monthly reports for the customer,
these reports are VERY important !!

Recently we have had individual exports dying and not being
noticed until when we come to produce the reports and the
data is not there.

I have been trying to create an MCC alarm rule that checks
the value of one of the exports attributes (Exporting State)
and then fires an alarm if it is anything but ACTIVE. The
problem I have is that the only command I can issue to check
the exports will only allow you to see all the attributes
which is useless for an MCC alarm.

Does anyone know how to create this alarm that interrogates
just one export attribute ??

(BTW - I could write a DCL script to dump the exports to a file
and then parse that file.....but a proper MCC alarm would
be much better/reliable)

Thanks in advance for any help

Barry Howard
(P.s. I would appreciate any suggestions as this is a customer
MCC platform)

6183.1Exports stopsAZUR::DURIFFri Nov 25 1994 04:2714
Hi Barry,

Could you please post more information on the configuration.

- What are the exporting request
- How many entities
- What is the polling period
- Does the state change from ACTIVE to another state or does it stay ACTIVE
and no more polling takes place.
- How many time does it takes after exporting is started to see the problem
- Are you running VMS or ULTRIX.
- In case of VMS are you using UCX.

6183.2Sorry...........I need alarming not problem diagnosisSNOTTY::BARRYPloppy Sir, Son of PloppyFri Nov 25 1994 07:1815
Hi,

Maybe I was slightly mis-leading with my request for help.

I dont actually need to know why the exporting is dying as
I am able to sort that out once it happens. What I actually
need is a way of detecting (hopefully though an MCC alarm)
that exporting has died and action needs to be taken.

I am running VMS V5.5-2 and MCC V1.3. I am using UCX V2.0 to
provide the TCPIP services.

Thanks in advance

6183.3exporting requests dyingAZUR::DURIFTue Nov 29 1994 07:2918
Hi,

.2 I dont actually need to know why the exporting is dying.

I understand the way you want to get rid of this problem.

We experienced the problem on another site exporting the same entities but
with a MULTINET TCP/IP stack.

As we cannot reproduce this problem at Valbonne i am interested in any
configuration using UCX which as the problem.

Could you tell me how many entities are exported.

Thank you,

Benoit

6183.4Actually, I do need to know why this is failingSNOTTY::BARRYPloppy Sir, Son of PloppyWed Nov 30 1994 06:3631
Hi Benoit,

I have managed to write a DCL script to detect when an export is "not there"
and fire an alarm to an MCC notification window.

Now I have the problem that I cannot get two out of the six exports we
do to actually work. When I issue the export command I am given a response
of "Exporting Started" but then when I try to interrogate the export I get a
"No exporting present for the specified entity".

I am using VMS V5.5-2 with UCX V2.0.

The background exporting process is fine and the other exports seem to be
working fine.

The export command I am issueing is :

"export snmp uk-gfd-war interface 6 export target dka200:[mcc]mcc_export.rdb, -
	export period 00:30:00"

All the exports we do are for interfaces from Cisco AGC 7000.

I never get to see a state change for the two problem exports because by the time I
have issued the "show export" command the export has disappeared.

Thanks in advance

Barry
(BTW - This is a customer network and we need to get it working otherwise when it
comes to the monthly reports we're in REAL trouble !!)
