6158.0. "Problem Fully Registering Alantec Hubs" by SNOTTY::BARRY (Ploppy Sir, Son of Ploppy) Thu Nov 03 1994 08:47

Hi All,

I have three Alantec Hubs registered as SNMP devices on my
MCC platform.

When using the command line MCC I can access these hubs and
show all of their attributes......

		BUT

When I try to access the hubs via the MCC GUI I get the
"only partially registered" warning messages. So I then
select the Register option from the commands menu and all
I get from this is that the device can only be partially
registered because there is no response from the entity.
This "no response" behaviour when registering is also true
for the command line MCC.

I have tried pinging the device for a period of time and
NONE of the pings ever get lost !!

It is confusing me that I can talk to the device fine with
the command line but cannot with the GUI.....

Can anyone shed some light on this or maybe others have
had these problems.......??

BTW - I have already tried de-registering and re-registering.

Thanks in advance

6158.1I too have seen thisMADMXX::WOESTEMEYERWhy??...Why not!!!Thu Nov 03 1994 14:047
I too have seen this and think I can explain it. When registering and SNMP
entity part of the registration is a getnext againest the objects root id(?)
to see if it supports any vendor mibs. If the entity does not respond to
the getnext, you will get the partial registration message.

You can still use the iconic map, but will have to put up with the partial
registration message.

Ok......that seems sensible........

Is there no MIB which can be installed that has this Atlantec compatibility ??

6158.3It's Atlantec's fault!BIKINI::KRAUSECSC Network Management/HubsWed Nov 09 1994 05:0411
Steve's explanation in .1 is concise and correct (Hi Steve, still
working with MCC?).

>Is there no MIB which can be installed that has this Atlantec compatibility ??

No. MCC would have to program around this agent's deficiencies - which
is not likely to happen. Atlantec's SNMP agent does not behave
correctly. They are violating the rules stated in RFC1157. Send your
complaints to them and request a fix of their agent.
