Note 1808.0 DECnis Management Platform recommendation??? 1 reply

Good Morning,
I've just read note 1350 on managing the DECnis and am hoping by
entering this note we can get more info on "managing the DECnis"
Please take a minute to answer to this and provide pointers if
possible where we can get more information on how to manage the
DECnis and our strategy regarding management of DECnis based networks.
I've got a 20 node decnis network that needs a management platform
to allow it to be efficiently managed and to notify operations when
HDLC pt-pt links are down etc. (alarms). This network will continue
to grow to 50 nodes in the next year and more after that .
Can someone help me understand what is the best platform to recommend
to the customer to manage the DECnis and to be informed on the "status"
of the network. What does Digital and DECnis engineering recommend???
I imagine the options are:
Polycenter Netview or Polycenter 200 or 400 (with appropriate modules)
The questions are likely:
1. Is it better to manage with CMIP or SNMP and what are the +'s and -'s
2. How user friendly are these management platforms in managing the DECnis
3. How much consulting should be sold to set the solution up and what level
of expertise is required to do this setup and become operational.
3a.Customer would prefer an Alpha platform/OpenVMS but this is not mandatory
Alpha OSF/1 would work and after that Vax/OpenVMS
4. Is there a separate application that can be lauched to manage the DECnis
Something similar to Hubwatch....., If Pathdoctor what specifically
does it do to help manage the DECnis network and what does it need to
run as my network is currently DECnet and briged protocols.
5. How does our management of the DECnis compare to the management of an
AGS+ from Cisco or a BN or LN from Wellfleet.
6. How much NCL does the customer need to know to manage the DECnis when
a management platform is available. If a reasonable knowledge level is required
what courses does Digital offer or what materials should be read.
Thanks in Advance for your responses,
Jim

Hi,
Patiently awaiting any response or comments... I'm on holidays
now but will be going in this morning (in 7 hours).
Hopefully someone can put some comments in, so that I can address
this issue with the account manager and the customer.
I just read note 1350 and have a couple more questions....
What is the added value that Pathdoctor provides in managing the DECnis
Can it alarm on the status of the serial lines and notify Netview.
Thanks in advance for any response...
Jim
