6039.0. "MCC dlogin on Node4" by COMICS::PRICEC (J Conrad Price DTN 833-3269) Fri Jul 01 1994 07:31

    I am trying to use the dlogin facility on an Ultrix MCC engine to
    connect to a node4, and each time I try to use the facility I get ;

    XIO: unable to open connect 0:0 after 0 request ( 0 known processed )
    	  with 0 events remaining

          The connection was probably broken by a server shutdown or
    	  KillClient

    I am logging into an MCC engine, setting my DISPLAY back to my own W/S
    then firing up mcc_iconic_map as a background job, and these messages
    are appearing on the screen of the MCC engine.

    Is there an MCC environment variable that I need to define before
    invoking this dlogin subprocess, or am I doing something stupid ??

    Has no-one else tried this ? , or does it just work for everyone else ,
    or maybe there's nobody left who has any interest in MCC ?

Conrad,

There are still people interested and using DECmcc.

If you are interested on running the framework on OSF/1, I suggest you have a look on the TeMIP notefile where we
just announced the External FT of the TeMIP Framework on OSF/1.

But back to your point, I tried the dlogin on 2 node4 entities, one running UCX and one not running it and both
worked fine. I used the same type of configuration with Iconic Map PM running on a test machine and display
redirected to an Ultrix station.

From your initial message, it looks as if the display is being sent to 0.0 which is the local display of the
machine running the MCC engine. Are you sure that your DISPLAY env. variable was correctly set up before starting
the IMPM ?

Best regards,

Marc.

I tried it and it works perfectly. Remember that the node4 must be fully
registered before dlogin can be used, but this would give a different
message. Must be something with your ULTRIX setup, but I'm not an ULTRIX
guru...

At least I *am* left, I just happened to be out of the office for a day.

6039.4Extraneous DISPLAY environment variableKERNEL::EVANSNTue Jul 12 1994 09:0113
Conrad,

I think I have sorted this problem out. I had the same problem with other
facilities.

The mcc account we "#su - mcc" to has a .cshrc file which had a DISPLAY
environment varaiable which was 0:0, so although if we did a "#echo $DISPLAY"
we saw that it was set to point to our stations, it would appear that this was
being picked up by certain applications.

I have set this to point to my station at the moment.
