6031.0. "mcc problems" by GLDOA::DSMITH () Wed Jun 22 1994 19:17

I am doing consulting at a site with DECmcc (V1.3) and am having a couple
problems. Any assistance would be appreciated! Thanks...Doug

1.) what causes this message in the mcc_evc_sink.log file?

>>Error translating MCC event 3, status = 1000, 16-JUN-1994 15:51:05.41
16-JUN-1994 19:18:30.41, Received COLLECTOR message over UDP/IP

2.) We have a recording that gathers all counters for part = * every 15
minutes. We have rules that check inbound/outbound util against this
historical data. [i.e.:
    (SNMP RT0001 Interface 4 inbound utilization > 70,   AT every 00:15:00,
     FOR start = (-00:15:05) duration 00:15:00, in domain
     .domain.brk-routers) ]

Occasionally during the day I get interminate rule failures with
this information: "Statistics requires two counter samples; fewer
returned."

Does this mean I missed receiving a poll? Is there a work around?

3.) Can I limit the IP poller to only one domain (and not a domain's
children)?

4.) When I upgrade TCP/IP services for OPENVMS from 2.0 to 2.0e or 2.0e
to 3.1 will this break MCC? Will I have to relink the TCPIP_AM or any
other components?

6031.1udp_timeout, udp_retries?GLDOA::DSMITHThu Jun 23 1994 10:138

If I am missing polls, is there any way to tune the udp_timeout/retries
parameters used by the historian process?

Thanks
Doug
6031.2MCC specialized exception code : 3GLDOA::DSMITHMon Jun 27 1994 14:2411
RE: .0, ITEM 2

I am seeing the following error code when I went back and looked at the
last poll failure reason. Any pointers that might help me track down
an exception code : 3 error?

               Time of last failed poll = "27-JUN-1994 08:32:59.40",
               Last poll failure reason = "MCC specialized exception code : 3",

Thanks, Doug
6031.3MCC specialized exception code : 2GLDOA::DSMITHMon Jun 27 1994 14:3811
RE: .-1

I am also seeing exception code 2 errors. Any pointers to where these are
described?

               Time of last failed poll = "26-JUN-1994 07:38:44.06",
               Last poll failure reason = "MCC specialized exception code : 2",

Thanks, Doug

6031.4can I minimize my exception 3s?GLDOA::DSMITHMon Jun 27 1994 15:3812
From reviewing previous notes (I know I should of done this first) exception
code 2 is "no response from entity" and exception code 3 is Internet
communications device error !<InetDevError>". Given this insight the code
2's occurred when upgrading ucx.

RE: .1 Is there anyway to increase retries or timeout values to minimize
the exception code 3s? I poll 64 interfaces and the interfaces two
routers away on the slower lines are giving me the most indetermine alarm
messages (utilization statistics).

Thanks
Doug
6031.5Invalid SNMP PDUGLDOA::DSMITHThu Jun 30 1994 18:4610
I set up protocol traces of the "no response from entity" errors
from supposedly missed polls (re: .-1). The traces show that occasionally
a misformed snmp packet gets generated by MCC. They are resent at UDP_TIMEOUT
intervals and of course get no response. If anyone is interested I will be
happy to post trace information here.

In the mean time my customer and I have escalated this problem through proper
support channels.

Thanks, Doug
6031.6invalid protocol generatedGLDOA::DSMITHMon Jul 11 1994 16:55104
The MCC station sends an SNMP packet that appears to be invalid in
frames 11, 14, and 17.

The following frames result from polls generated by the historian process
from the following recording:

        record snmp .ip.RCHRT0001 interface 2 PARTITION = * ,  -
        poll PERIOD = 00:15:00, keep age 30,  -
        in domain .domain.brk-routers

In the PROTOCOL SAMPLE below frames 1-4 result get the "Identifiers" partition
information. Frames 5-8 result get the "Status" partition information. Frames
9-17 should be attempting to get the "Counters" partition, but the get SNMP
Protocol Data Unit appears to be an INVALID ENCODING. Frames 18-21 get the
"Characteristics" partition information.

I have included a protocol breakdown and hex dump of the PDU with the INVALID
ENCODING below. The protocol sample should be viewed in 132 column mode as it
doesn't quite fit in 80 colums.

Notes:
        1. In this example BRKRT0001 is the DEFAULT IP GATEWAY for the MCC
           subnet.
        2. The MCC station's IP address is 167.6.2.10/DECnet address 15.108.
        3. BRKRT0003 is the IP GATEWAY directly attached to the destination
           router.
        4. The destination router's (RCHRT0001) IP address is 180.9.254.253.
