5999.0. "MTU problem exceeding Max Levels ?" by ANNECY::TERHORST_C () Thu May 19 1994 12:55

I'm trying to translate a Vendors MIB, the MTU utility got no problem
with the MIB itself, and when I look with the Dictionary Browser I see
all the classes and entities from this MIB.
However when I'm registering the entity it goes no further then 5 levels all
what I'm trying to enter further down the tree produces a message "no child
entities".

Now I have two questions for the MCC-goeroes:

( I copied a part of the output produced by the MTU utility to explain clarify
the questions )

1 What does the -h mean in the next output example from the MTU utility ?

2 What does that sneaky sentence Max levels = 5 mean and where can I find
  any documentation about it ?

  Issuing following command:
    $ MTU = "$ SYS$SYSTEM:MCC_TCPIP_MTU.EXE"

                                   * * *

  (Now processing file # 1 out of a list of 2 file(s) ...)

  Beginning Phase 1 for file SYS$COMMON:[MCC]STRATACOM1.TXT;

    18-MAY-1994 12:04:26
  Now starting to run the MIB Translator ...
  This may take approximately 1-5 minutes.
  Issuing following command:
    $ MTU SYS$COMMON:[MCC]STRATACOM1.TXT;  -h
  Max levels = 5
  MIB translation completed successfully.

  Any help will be GREAT !!!!!!

                Chris ter Horst.

The -h option means: produce an MCC help file from the DESCRIPTION
fields in the MIB .

Max levels = 5 means this MIB tree is five levels deep. That is exactly
what you're experiencing.

What exactly are you looking for? With the info you gave, everything
seems to be ok.

What I really need is to go down at least 9 levels down
the tree, is there a way to expand this amount of levels ?

5999.3Whence the other 4 levels?SCCA::daveAhh, but fortunately, I have the key to escape reality.Fri May 20 1994 15:117
I guess the next question is
"How do you know you need to go 9 levels deep?"
The MIB file you compiled only had 5 levels in it,
so where do the other 4 you want come from?

Sorry for answering a bit late, but we had a weekend and
an extra holiday here, hooraay !

About these extra levels, they are not extra, but they
are in the MIB description. When I'm registering a SNMP
entity, I cannot click into the entities further than 5
levels. For example
_________SNMP
____________STRATACOM
_____________________SVNODE
___________________________PACKETGROUP
______________________________________PACKETLINETABLE...

These tree dots are really after the entity packetlinetable
When I click now on the packetlinetable icon the message
"this entity has no child entities appears", but there are
in the mib. I tried to use the toolbox to create and regis-
ter the packetlinetable, I can create it and with the
operations characteristics command look into it, but when
I'm navigating one step up and back again the entity is gone.
A message is given that the parent entity is partially
registered and some child entities might not appear on the
screen. Unfortunally I can't register the parent entity
complete, because they do not have an IP address, and it is
not possible to give them one !!!
I hope this might be a better explanation of my situation I'm
in now, any help will be GREAT....

tks in adv.

It just means that this table is empty! The table entries are defined in
the MIB, but if the agent currently does not have an entry in this
table, the Iconic Map tell you this (in its own way ;-).
