5919.0. "MCC, DECNET-OSI, Alarming, -> SRP allocation problem " by BONNET::STRATMAN (Peter Stratman @VBO) Fri Mar 25 1994 09:22

Hi,

Our MCC system runs on DECNET-OSI.

VMS V5.5-2
MCC V1.3
DECNET-OSI V5.6B

As soon as MCC alarming is activated, lots of SRPs are allocated (really
lots: 3 to 10 thousand a day) and are never released again.

Through SDA I saw that these SRP's were used for LOG (old format logical
name blocks) and contain something like :

(output from SDA)

SDA> format 820CD400

820CD400 LOG$L_LTFL 00350008
820CD404 LOG$L_LTBL 00000022
820CD408 LOG$W_SIZE 0004
820CD40A LOG$B_TYPE 0B
820CD40B LOG$B_TABLE 00
820CD40C LOG$W_GROUP 0008
820CD40E LOG$B_AMOD 35
820CD40F 00
820CD410 LOG$L_MBXUCB 00000000
           LOG$C_LENGTH

820CD414 LOG$T_NAME ".....CSMACD$ESA_8313C180."

Does this look like a known problem with DECNET OSI or DECMCC to anyone?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Peter.

Looks very familiar! It has something to do with frequently starting and
stopping protocols on the Ethernet driver. The problem is seen with
Alarms, because it causes frequent accesses (through AMs). BUT it can be
reproduced without MCC (I can consume SRPs using DECelms, LTM and even
UCX).

We already escalated the problem and engineering is working on it. They
narrowed it down to the common driver code, so it affects ALL Ethernet
and FDDI drivers available for VMS!

5919.2Only on DECnet/OSI ??BONNET::STRATMANPeter Stratman @VBOMon Mar 28 1994 06:3410
    Robert,

    Thanks for the info.

Since we do roughly the same things on one MCC system running Phase IV
(which is OK) and another MCC system which runs DECnet/OSI (and has the
problem), my hypothesis was that the problem is specific to
    DECnet/OSI... Is this true ?

    Peter.

Yes.

Has a patch for this problem been released yet or is it fixed
in the upcoming 1.4 ?

	Hi,

Yes, a patch was released and is avaliable on:
