5840.0. "Internet Comm Device error IVCHAN" by IJSAPL::DOOLAARD (All for the best) Mon Jan 24 1994 04:35

    Hello,

I have a problem with the SNMP access module/ Iconic map. When I enable
more then 41 snmp based alarm rules (below this value all is O.K.) I'm
not able to look into snmp entities through the iconic map. The error
    message I'm getting is :

    " Internet communications device error % System-F-IVCHAN invalid I/O
    channel"

The window with wich I look into the snmp entitie stays empty and the
pointer remains a watch. When canceling the operation I get the above
    error message.

Through FCL all keeps working fine.

Further I'm also recording snmp data (in another domain) for about 10
entities with about 5 sub entities.

What could be the reason for this behaviour and what can be done about
    this.

    Regards,

    Carlo.

This is a real problem for customers running multiple snmp rules....

The version of MCC is V1.3 (latest kit from CD-ROM)

I would appriciate a fix for this problem since SNMP is still growing
    in importance.

The problem is in UCX. You have to play around with UCX to increase
the maximum of sockets that can be opened simultaneously. When
UCX gets into such a weird state the only solution is to stop and
	restart UCX.

If this problem occurs I'm still able to go to snmp entities via FCL.
Also there are enough free sockets and I can FTP and TELNET to hosts.

Is there anybody who has more than 40 snmp based alarm rules and is
still able to look into snmp entities through the iconic map?

We normally stress tested DECmcc with 250 alarms running
simultaneously on the SNMP AM. For V1.3.0, we made sure that
the tests were successful before shipping to field test. There
is probably something else that is wrong in your environment.
Maybe someone who has some free cycles can figure it out.

I solved the problem with installing a patched version of the
    mcc_iconic_map PM (07/09/93 Special executable for DEC_WM_TAKE_FOCUS
    problem.)
