5773.0. "ALPHA UPGRADEABLE ??" by SPANKY::PETROFF () Fri Dec 03 1993 11:22

I have been told that the platform that NIS/NETsupport currently delivers
PLYcenter 400 on, the VAXstation 400/model 90, is ALPHA upgradeable.
If true, this has the potential, therefore, to address the capital
requirements necessary in a migration plan. Can anyone confirm this ??

    Thanks...

5773.1Yes. Also for model 60CLARID::HOFSTEEDigital has it now! You'll get it laterMon Dec 06 1993 03:4252
The following applies to an ALPHA upgrade for a VAXstation 4000/60. A similar
thing exists for the model 90. If I am well informed the upgrade package for
the model 60 is PE42-U-AB/BB (makes it a DEC3000/600)and for the model 90,
it's PE42U-AC/BC (to DECstation 3000/600) and PE52U-AB/BB for a DECstation
3000/800. See for more info the UPGRADE notesfile.

Chapter 4 in the October 1993 Systems and Options Catalog covers the
ADVANTAGE-UPGRADE offerings for Digital. It is via these upgrade paths and
part numbers that you can upgrade your customer from their currently installed
VAXstation 4000/60 to an Alpha-based workstation.

With the introduction of the DEC 3000 Model 600 and 800 systems to replace the
Model 400 and 500 systems, the upgrade paths have been established to the new
systems.

Therefore, if your customer wants to upgrade the system from a VAX 4000 Model
60 to a DEC 3000 Model 600 running OSF/1 you would use part number PE42U-AB.
This would give them a DEC 3000 Model 600 SBB with 32MB of memory, DEC OSF/1
AXP two-user base license. DEC Open3D AXP license, NAS250 License, DEC PHIGS
Runtime License, MME Runtime License and DECspin Audio License.

PLEASE NOTE that this does not include a keyboard, mouse, monitor, disk, or
graphics adapter. Your customer can either move forward these options from the
VAX 4000 Model 60 (assuming that they are supported) or purchase new options as
required. The upgrade offering includes the necessary brackets and mounting
hardware to move forward any supported devices from the VAXstation to the DEC
3000.

PE42U-AB has a List price of $12,995 and a Standard price of $15,588.

As was pointed out in an earlier reply, the WHYNOW::UPGRADES notes conference
contains much more information about the ADVANTAGE-UPGRADE offerings including
what options are and are not supported on the DEC 3000 Model 600 workstation.

I hope this has been of some help. If not, feel free to contact me.
