5763.0. "DECmcc technical article in "IEEE Network"" by CSOADM::ROTH (I'm getting closer to my home...) Fri Nov 26 1993 09:47

A fine technical article on DECmcc is in the November, 1993 issue of
"IEEE Network". It is authored by Alex Allister Shvartsman of Digital.

If I were a customer reading this article I'd get real excited... until
I found out the product was "dead"!!

HEY, wait a moment! MCC is NOT dead (or am I working on a dead horse?).
It is no longer our strategic direction, but this does not mean it's
dead. Believe it or not, but since the NetView announcement people are
really working with MCC(!) now. I'm swamped with calls and I hear people
saying: "Why do you stop development on such a superb product?". Why
didn't they say this earlier???

Gauge for yourself the participation in this notefile by developers and
technical support people... choose whatever adjective you wish other
than "dead".

Maybe the horse isn't dead but the deal with the dog food factory has
already been inked.

5763.3Not dead - just stuntedSKIBUM::GASSMANFri Dec 03 1993 14:5831
The product is not dead - however it's childhood was over before it's
time which stunted it's growth. MCC will be used by a lot of customers
for quite some time - because there is STILL NOTHING IN THE MARKET that
can match it. TeMIP lives on, and will go to OSF, providing much of the
basic product to those that really need it and are willing to pay the
price. Digital decided to reduce investment in the "Rolls Royce" market
that MCC represented, because OSF sales are critical to Digital's growth,
and most network managers interested in OSF are not "Rolls Royce" kind of
customers. Too bad there isn't enough money to invest in both. There
was a time when we had both kinds of products, but not enough folks
    realized it....

If you look in the NetView notes file, you will see that the early
users of the product are already figuring out how to duplicate many of
the features MCC had - THIS IS THE DIGITAL DIFFERENCE!!!! HP and IBM
have had a head start, but those that have been exposed to MCC know
what can be done - and will make NetView do it. MCC was mostly a
service oriented sale - and services using NetView can beat IBM and HP
    using their respective *Views.

MCC is still the best for managing Digital legacy stuff (including
Phase V). Some customers need to buy it for that. The MCC product is
only $12,000 USD. What many customers are really buying is the experience
from Digital helping them know what to manage, when, what reports to
write, what kind of people to hire, what policies and procedures to
use. MCC was the vehicle for this in the past, NetView is it for the
future. The faster the transition, the most money Digital makes - but
the real money comes from the consulting - not the product license.
    SELL WHAT IS REQUIRED.
