5753.0. "MIBs - location for DEC devices?" by BREAKR::HA () Mon Nov 22 1993 19:04

Forgive me if this is a rather naive question, but what exactly are
MIBs and how can I get ahold of the ones for our hardware? From what I
gather a MIB is something that sort of defines how to talk to a
    particular network device.

My customer has purchased a Sun box to manage the network, which has a
Pyramid, and HP and several DEC network devices such as DECservers,
routers, etc. So I need to get MIBs for the DEC devices.

A MIB (Management Information Base) contains the data structure and type
definitions for SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) to manage a
particular device or kind of devices.

There are a few standard MIBs that are not specific to a particular
vendor's device (MIB2, BRIDGE,CHAR...), and there are private or
vendor-specific MIBs.

The DEC MIBs can be found on the Internet on gatekeeper.dec.com
(16.1.0.2).

To get the mibs:
1- login using anonymous ftp
2- cd to /private/mib
3- enter the 'ascii' command
4- use the 'get' command to retrieve the MIB files

Wildcarding in not allowed in this directory, you have to use the exact
file name in the get command. I have appended the README file that gives
the exact file names (I got it using step 4 above).

Remember that most DEC devices implement standard MIBs and use private
MIBs only as extensions for things not defined in the standard. The
newer DECservers e.g. listen to CHAR and RS232 standard MIBs.

If you exactly name the DEC devices that you need MIBs for, I might be
able to help you in a more specific way.

in Concise MIB format. Files with .txt extension are in text form,
and the corresponding files without an extension are
    in compileable form.

    1) dec_elan_vendor_mib_v27.txt, dec_elan_vendor_mib_v27

DEC ELAN MIB version 2.7. This MIB is subject to change.
This version is a superset of versions 1.3, 1.8, 2.0.

       Supported by:

       o DECconcentrator 500 v3.2 firmware (also RFC-1213, RFC-1285)
       o DECbridge 51X/52X/6XX v1.3 firmware (also RFC-1213,
                                              RFC-1285, RFC-1493)
       o LAN Bridge 200 v2.5 firmware (also RFC-1213, RFC-1493)

    2) dec_giga_vendor_mib_v10.txt, dec_giga_vendor_mib_v10

Gigaswitch MIB version 1.0. This MIB is subject to change.

       Supported by:

       o Gigaswitch SCP v1.0 firmware

Note that this product supports the DEC ELAN MIB v2.7 as well.
A combined MIB module is available in dec_elan_giga_vendor_mib_v10
containing both MIBs which should be used when managing with
       DECMCC v1.2.

    3) dec_hub90_vendor_mib_v11.txt, dec_hub90_vendor_mib_v11

DEC HUB90 MIB version 1.1. This MIB is subject to change.

       Supported by:

       o DECagent 90 v1.1 firmware

    4) Outdated firmware versions: If you have the following product
firmware versions, please request a firmware upgrade.

       o DECconcentrator 500 v3.1 firmware
       o DECconcentrator 500 v3.0b firmware
