5739.0. "Packetprobe 90 only partially registers" by SIOG::PARKS () Tue Nov 16 1993 04:14

I tried registering a packetprobe 90 on DECmcc/VMS and it only partially
registered. The probe is working fine as I'm using the probewatch s/w. I
can register an Ultrix system on DECmcc/VMS as an snmp entity so mcc
appears to be ok. I can ping the packetprobe from the mcc system.

Are there problems in using the packetprobe with DECmcc. I want to send
snmp traps from the packetprobe to mcc. Will the partial registration
effect this ?

5739.1Known problem or what?KERNEL::WARDJOMon Feb 21 1994 06:1211
    Hello,

    Does anyone know if this is a known problem with the Probe, or if it
    could be something in the setup.

     Any clues as to what to look for.

    Regards,

MCC requires that the object (in the case the probe) return a number
of the system attributes in the MIB-2 tree (like sysDescriptor,
sysObjectID, sysLocation, etc.).

If the probe is not returning them, then you will get the partial
registration. Software like the probewatch ignore most of these
fields. The "spec" (RFC mumble) says that the device MUST return
that info, and MCC seems to ignore that adage "Be generous in
what you accept, carefull in what you send".

Try running MCC_TCPIP_MQ and see what it is actually
willing to return.

Partial registration should not affect the sending of traps.
