5681.0. "AS/400 from DECmcc?" by KCBBQ::TERRY (TERRY_B) Fri Oct 22 1993 12:05

    	Hi,

I have a customer (who has money) that is rolling out VAX 6000's
and AS/400 machines in 6-8 plants across the country. They would
like a lights out situation for each site and have it managed
from a central location. Furthermore, they are giving each site
a local choice of ethernet or token ring.

The specific requirement is for system management from a single
platform for both the Digital and IBM machines. On the Digital
side, they are willing to use DECmcc, with a migration to
Polycenter/Netview, and would like to know if there are any
DECmcc modules to handle managing the AS/400's. Even a console
window would help for such problems as remote booting and operator
messages. They have a very large CISCO network using both routing
and bridging. The information they need from the network itself
is simply passive SNMP traps so they know where problems may lie.
Another group is responsible for the health of the network itself.

Does anyone know of a product that will allow AS/400 management
from a Digital platform? If not, does anyone have any good ideas
on some terminal pass-through that we can use to access the AS/400
console. I realize that if we go with a custom design, we will
have the opportunity to sell some consulting. I know very little
about the AS/400 and what management capabilities exist, so if
there are any experts out there, I would appreciate any
    	suggestions.

They are also talking to IBM about this, and I hope that we can
get this business, so they will migrate to Polycenter/Netview
instead of letting IBM bag the whole business.

    	Thanks in advance...

Do the AS/400s run TCP/IP? If so, then you can use telnet to get the console
access.
