5586.0. "Register SNMP entity yields No response from entity" by CUJO::HILL (Dan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer Resident) Fri Sep 10 1993 01:27

    I believe I have checked everything mentioned in note 2012.3, as well
    as 2232 and 3345. Here is a quick rundown of the problem:

    MCC> REGISTER SNMP .snmp1 SYNONYM SNMP1

    Partially registers entity. Also displays the message:
    No response from entity.

    Configuration:

    mcc1  111.1.1.1      SNMP1  222.2.2.2
      |                   |
    0-+-----+---0   0--+---+---0
            |          |
             \        /
    111.1.1.2 \      / 222.2.2.1
              iprouter1

    All IP addresses are in host tables correctly. There is also a bind
    server and addresses are supplied properly there, too. I have supplied
    the community name as part of the password qualifier. I can ping node
    SNMP1 and iprouter1 from node mcc1. I can "test" the nodes via MCC.

    iprouter1   will register just fine.
    SNMP1 will NOT register completely, only partially.

    What gives?

I'd look for a problem with the SNMP agent on SNMP1.

5586.2There is no agent, yet it only partially registers.CUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentFri Sep 10 1993 13:1814
    Erik,

    I am simply trying to register an IP node with no SNMP agent. The node
    in question (SNMP1) was poorly named in this example (I was referring
    to the "class" of the entity, not that it had an SNMP agent).

    As you can see in .0, the node SNMP1 is on a different network than the
    MCC node. I can ping it, but it will not fully register. I have
    checked all host tables and community names in the router and
    elsewhere (as suggested in 2012.3), but it still won't register.

    Any ideas?

5586.3It's a featureTOOK::MINTZErik MintzFri Sep 10 1993 14:246
Yep, the system is performing as designed.
To completely register an SNMP type entity, you need an SNMP agent
on that entity (that's why it is called "SNMP" rather than "IP").
Otherwise, you get a partial registration.

5586.4Nodes without SNMP agents registered fully beforeCUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentMon Sep 13 1993 16:3916
    Erik,

    You are correct, but it wasn't always this way. We had a problem with
    V1.1 that would not allow us to register & "ping" an IP node that
    didn't have an SNMP agent. Changes were made with V1.2 (I believe)
    that allowed for this.

    I have nodes that have **never** had SNMP agents on them, but are
    "fully registered", so that is where my problem originated.

    I suppose that it was V1.3 that went back to the "partial registration"
    message, but still allowed you to "ping" (Test) SNMP entities.

    Thanks for refreshing my memory.

	Dan,
		You are right. The SNMP AM did allow full registration
	of IP nodes which did not have an agent in V1.2. In V1.3 we added
	mib filtering. Mib filtering involves querying the agent to figure
	out which private mibs are supported. For an entity which does not
	have an agent, mib filtering fails thereby causing an error, which
	in turn causes partial registration. That is why you are getting
	partial registration for the entity in question.

5586.6partialy register because of different domain nameHKGACT::SUSANCHANMon Sep 13 1993 23:038
When I tried to register an VMS host with UCX installed on my VAX MCC station,
I got partially register also. And it took a lot of time to figure out because
the domain name configure in UCX on the MCC station is different from the
domain name configure in UCX on the managed entities.

Should the partially registered message be more specific to help troubleshooting?

Thanks.

	You will see the real reason for partial registration at the
	time of registration.

	eg.

Partial registration success. Please retry later to complete the registration.
        Reason for Partial Registration = No response from entity.

5586.8Any way to register a non agent box?BWTEAL::W_MCGAWTue Jul 05 1994 13:4213
    RE: .5

    Is there any way to work around the registration? I have a customer
    that has his own boxes (no snmp agent) that he wants to register so
    that he can receive traps from them. Even though they don't have an
    agent, the traps are being sent as though there is one. He says that
    he can't create a notify request against the box since it is not
    registered.

    Any help appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Walt
