5586.1 | Sure the agent is OK? | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz | Fri Sep 10 1993 08:52 | 4 |
| I'd look for a problem with the SNMP agent on SNMP1.

5586.2 | There is no agent, yet it only partially registers. | CUJO::HILL | Dan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer Resident | Fri Sep 10 1993 13:18 | 14 |
| Erik,
I am simply trying to register an IP node with no SNMP agent. The node
in question (SNMP1) was poorly named in this example (I was referring
to the "class" of the entity, not that it had an SNMP agent).
As you can see in .0, the node SNMP1 is on a different network than the
MCC node. I can ping it, but it will not fully register. I have
checked all host tables and community names in the router and
elsewhere (as suggested in 2012.3), but it still won't register.
Any ideas?

5586.3 | It's a feature | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz | Fri Sep 10 1993 14:24 | 6 |
| Yep, the system is performing as designed.
To completely register an SNMP type entity, you need an SNMP agent
on that entity (that's why it is called "SNMP" rather than "IP").
Otherwise, you get a partial registration.

5586.4 | Nodes without SNMP agents registered fully before | CUJO::HILL | Dan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer Resident | Mon Sep 13 1993 16:39 | 16 |
| Erik,
You are correct, but it wasn't always this way. We had a problem with
V1.1 that would not allow us to register & "ping" an IP node that
didn't have an SNMP agent. Changes were made with V1.2 (I believe)
that allowed for this.
I have nodes that have **never** had SNMP agents on them, but are
"fully registered", so that is where my problem originated.
I suppose that it was V1.3 that went back to the "partial registration"
message, but still allowed you to "ping" (Test) SNMP entities.
Thanks for refreshing my memory.

Dan,
You are right. The SNMP AM did allow full registration
of IP nodes which did not have an agent in V1.2. In V1.3 we added
mib filtering. Mib filtering involves querying the agent to figure
out which private mibs are supported. For an entity which does not
have an agent, mib filtering fails thereby causing an error, which
in turn causes partial registration. That is why you are getting
partial registration for the entity in question.

5586.6 | partialy register because of different domain name | HKGACT::SUSANCHAN | | Mon Sep 13 1993 23:03 | 8 |
| When I tried to register an VMS host with UCX installed on my VAX MCC station,
I got partially register also. And it took a lot of time to figure out because
the domain name configure in UCX on the MCC station is different from the
domain name configure in UCX on the managed entities.
Should the partially registered message be more specific to help troubleshooting?
Thanks.

You will see the real reason for partial registration at the
time of registration.
eg.
Partial registration success. Please retry later to complete the registration.
Reason for Partial Registration = No response from entity.

5586.8 | Any way to register a non agent box? | BWTEAL::W_MCGAW | | Tue Jul 05 1994 13:42 | 13 |
| RE: .5
Is there any way to work around the registration? I have a customer
that has his own boxes (no snmp agent) that he wants to register so
that he can receive traps from them. Even though they don't have an
agent, the traps are being sent as though there is one. He says that
he can't create a notify request against the box since it is not
registered.
Any help appreciated!
Thanks,
Walt
