5576.0. "only AA-00-04-00-xx-yy as forward data static entry?" by MAN01::DRAEGER (Gerd Draeger,SWAS Mannheim Germany) Tue Sep 07 1993 12:43

Problem:

FDDI-Bridge 610 is to be setup as follows:

- Port 1 (FDDI) no filters
- Port 2           "
- Port 3           "
- Port 4  Protocol filtering , forwarding only Decnet, TCP/IP + NETBIOS,
          Address forwarding for dedicated ethernet adresses ...

Setup:

Protocol database:	08-00 forward port 1,2,3,4
			08-06		"
			60-03		"
			80-40		"
-> line 4 default ethernet typ filter = true

forward database : multicast entries for the above types
			 forward port 1,2,3,4

			Static entries for the dedicated nodes
			AA-00-04-00-xx-yy where yyxx is the hex.value
			of DECNET node number with forward port 1,4

-> line 4 manual mode = true

Result: as expected;

But: Entering a node into the forward database which has no DECNET
(pure TCP/IP, using ethernet address 08-00-2b-38-13-4d), fails to
communicate through the bridge;
turning line 4 manual mode to false, and removing the 08-00-2b-address
from the forward database (static entry), succeeds;
so, protocol filters+multicast forwarding must be ok.

workaround:
installation of DECNET/ultrix + partial startup of Decnet
(due to missing license) turns the ethernet to AA-00-04-00-xx-yy;

Now: Node can successfully communicate through the bridge, which is
now back to line 4 manual mode = true + AA-00-04-00-xx-yy in the
forward database as static entry ...

Any solution for that behaviour ? ( since there could be nodes in the
future which are not capable Decnet being installed, and which
must communicated through 08-00-2b-..... and TCP/IP )
