5495.0. "Does DECmcc support LOCAL Naming option ?" by COL01::LOPEZ (Arturo Lopez drinks Klsch at Cologne) Tue Aug 17 1993 13:46

I defined local naming option (LNO) for the DNS
name space.

When I try to add a Domain in DECmcc, I get an error
message.

Does DECmcc not support the LNO ?

If not, how can I configure DECmcc to use local MIR
instead ?

5495.1LNO is a DECnet term. Doesn't apply to MCCTOOK::R_SPENCENets don't fail me now...Tue Aug 17 1993 15:3219
You are confusing the config question of having DECnet/OSI use DNS or
a Local Naming Option vs Polycenter Network Manager use DNS or a Local
    Name Space.

In this case, DNS is a network service that applications may choose to
use. In the old days, DECnet/OSI required the use of DNS. Also, in the
early days, PNM also required it.

When you install PNM (Polycenter Network Manager), one of the questions
you have to answer is about the use of DNS.

If you choose to not use DNS but when you installed it you did say you
wanted to use DNS then you can either reinstall (horrors) or change a
logical name (or environemntal variable on ULTRIX). The logical
is MCC_DNS_SELECTION . Set it to "DNS" for DNS and "MIR" for local.
Edit the SYS$STARTUP:MCC_LOGICAL_DIR.COM to make the change perminant.

    ?? This make things clearer??

I sure do want to use DNS for DECmcc instead of local MIR.

I chosed LNO (local naming option) when I installed DECnet_OSI instead
of distributed name space. When I try to define a DECMCC domain (means DNS
object) i get the message "C error.."

I just found out, that LNO is read only and therefore DECmcc can not write
in to this file

LNO does not provide DNS functions for applications. It only has the
minimal set of things that DECnet needs for name to address
    translations.

If you want MCC to use DNS then the system has to use DNS.
