Can you clarify this for me with an example. Does our code run on
a HP workstation (I thought it was VMS or Ultrix). Excuse my ignorance

How does the HP receive information from DECmcc as below you indicate
the value of the database and reports. Can the data base be queried
from HP Openview. Can messages be sent from DECmcc reporting alarms
to HP Openview. Does HP not yet have a database like Ingres. Is this not
a significant selling feature or knock off.

Anyone with suggestions on how we might win... Maybe HP is lot more then
marketing hype (of course proved out in Data Communications). Interestingly
enough, my general perception on the enterprise point of view was
that DECmcc would be the EMA and HP or MSU would be SNMP network manger.
Obviously, I have a lot of questions and few answers at this point.

.1 was referring to the displaying of an X-session (a map, a terminal
window, etc.) that runs on the MCC station, but the window appears on
a different workstation (SUN, HP, PC, etc.). All operations invoked on
the map displayed on the HP system actually run on the VAX or Ultrix
system running MCC. All the HP is doing is displaying the graphics
portion of the program.
There is nothing in the .1 reply indicating that the HP receives
anything other than the graphical display info from the MCC system.
In that case, the MCC system is polling entities for counter data and
the like and writing to an RDB (for VMS) or Ingres (Ultrix) database
residing on the same machine running DECmcc. The reports generator
uses Digital products such as Datatrieve and DECgraph to produce
reports, again all this runs on the DEC box.
If the HP system has an SQL interface and the databases on the MCC
system can be accessed via TCP/IP protocols, then the HP system could
probably read data from the databases populated by MCC.
I don;t know if the MCC alarms can be sent to the HP system, but from
the MCC point of view, there is a program called MCC_SEND_EVENT
(written in C) that can be used to send alarm events INTO MCC. If the
HP system can kick off a script upon generation of an alarm, then the
program could potentially be used to forward the alarm to DECmcc. If
HP has a similar program that can be ported to our platform and O/S,
then MCC could send it's alarms to the HP system.
Though it is a somewhat weak selling point, DECmcc has a line/form
command mode interface which allows the system to be used from a
character cell terminal. I do not believe HP has this, thus making it
*real* hard for someone to dial in from home and do work on OpenView.
Granted there are some methods of X-displaying across phone lines,
but none that I know of that operate with reasonable performance.

| Hi, this response came from Scott Hyndman in note 402 of NETMGT...JD
POLYCENTER 200/400 can pass alarm data to other management systems any
way they would like to see it. Typically it is done as part of an
action routine, executed as the result of a threshold alarm or event.
ie. SNMP trap or alarm coming in through data collector goes through
notification process, part of which is to execute an action routine.
The action routine takes the relevant data and forwards to the higher
level enterprise manager. This could be done through email or API etc.
Having the HP management station exert control over the POLYCENTER
platform is another matter. This is called director-to-director
communication and I don't believe HP can do this either. There could
be some sort of scripting done, however most managers just end up
opening a session on the remote or sub-manager platform.
You are unlikely to win the enterprise management with HP already well
positioned with POLYCENTER 200/400. However Digital is currently
working on addressing this issue. If you read the
mcc/POLYCENTER/NETMGT notes you will see this. The end result is that
we should be able to complete with HP directly. Basically MCC has a
good EMA archeticture but lacks in funtionallity and ISV support.
