5298.0. "What do you use for the MIR and the dictionary ?" by AEOENG::BOMMART (WaveWalker 887-4108) Mon Jul 05 1993 12:44

Hello MCC gurus,

I'm looking for information about the DECmcc MIR and dictionary.

I "think" that they are built above NDBM for Ultrix and RMS for VMS...

Can you confirm that ? (I know that by using the routines mcc_mir_xxx
we do not need to know these details but...)

If I ask this question, this is because my customer (using MCC Ultrix)
is looking for a package to store information and is evaluating several
	possibilities to do so:

		- DECmcc MIR routines...
		- relational database (Oracle, but the license price is
		  prohibitive for him)
		- other software packages...

Are you aware of a softare package which could be used in the MCC
environement (multi-processes and multi-threaded) other than the MCC MIR
, faster... and cheaper than a standard relational database...

I thank you in advance, Regards,
Damien.

    You are correct.

In the interest of matching the right tool to the job, would you ask
    your customer:
What sort of information s/he is trying to store ?
What does s/he plan to *do* with the data, once stored (i.e. how
does it need to be manipulated)?

re: .0

    Damien,

As Doug said it is difficult to recommand any specific storage package
without knowing the exact customer requirements, but for information,
we (TeMIP) were using nDBM for our alarm and log datastores in V1.0 and
we are switching in V1.1 to C-ISAM, the indexed file package from
    Informix.

There are several reasons that lead us to change our datastore package
which might be too long to explain here.

As your customer is also on Ultrix, I thought that might be of
    interest.

    Best regards,

    Marc.

Thank you Doug, Marc. (Salut Marc)

I should meet them next week and I will have a better idea of their
	exact needs...

I remember (bad memories with a delete multi-criteria routine
for the PURGE OC directive...). I think that Pascale remembers that as
	well :-)

If the license price of this soft package is not too expensive, it
might be interresting for us also. Depending of the meeting results,
	I might call you back..

Merci pour l'info. A bientot,
Damien.
