5286.0. "MTA EngineeringManager belives DECmcc will die?!?" by OSLACT::BJORN (Bjrn Olav Haugom) Thu Jul 01 1993 04:45

As a response from X.400 MTA 1988 Management to the question "Support for
SNMP?", Engineering Manager answered "No plans, we don't know if DECmcc will
survive".

I'm chocked about this statement. Do they have ANY reason for saying this? Has
there been discussions to phase out DECmcc already? Our VERY VERY good
statements on "10 ways to integrate with POLYCENTER Framework" beats ANY other
vendor of Network Management Applications, as I see it.

Now is the time to really be agressive on advertising our possibilities of
integrating everything with POLYCENTER Framework, because we have the best
opportunities to do so.

An example from Norway;

We are now proposing POLYCENTER Network Manager 200 to a bank spread around all
of Norway. We have given them a presentation of our POLYCENTER concept, and
told the about the "10 ways..." and given them the pre-configured demo of
DECmcc, with some addition to show off "live" event handling. This turned their
mindset from being sceptic to DECmcc (because of lack of functionality), to
being convinced about the high level of integration possibilities.

We also gave them a scene where we use a video-camera in the banks, monitoring
activity, and once a robbery is reported using alarm-buttons from the desks,
the video-frames will be sent over the network using a frame-grabber, which
compresses the image and pulls it over the net. As soon as someone presses the
alarm-button, an event is sent to DECmcc, notifying the security people in the
central office about the robbery, and starts a transmission of the frame via
fax to the local police-station.

If DECmcc is not good enough, then what is?
Someone ought to give the Engineering Managers and Product Marketing Managers a
lesson in how to make money. If they don't implement SNMP because they don't
know if DECmcc will be out there, they don't know what enterprise management
is, and they don't know what people want, and therefore they produce software
that can't be sold.

5286.1SNMP support yields benfit regardles of the directorHERON::PATEL_ALoLo-AQIC-I82Q-B4IP, - LMFThu Jul 01 1993 06:0112
I don't know about any of the POLYCENTER products being canned...

However, the response you got to your question suggests that the person
is not well informed about management capabilities or the question was
not clear. The support of SNMP for the management of X.400 MTA has
nothing to do with management director in question. You should ask
the question again, explaining that the support of SNMP in MTA would
allow MTA to be managed using any director that provides SNMP
management capabilities, not just the POLYCENTER Network manager
    product.

GOOD!

The question was raised from others. I received a mail where this was
documented.

You couldn't be more right. What I meant to say, was that I think it's strange
that Eng. Manager in networking products such as MTA 400 doesn't know this!
