5279.0. "Frame Stip mode on DECconcentrator 500s" by GADWAL::WOESTEMEYER (Why??...Why not!!!) Tue Jun 29 1993 11:53

A customer raised an interesting question, to which I an searching for
an answer. He has 4 DECconcentrator 500s. Looking at line characteristics
on them 3 show the frame strip mode as BRIDGE STRIP, the 4th as S/A mode.
The differecnes in the concentrators are that the 3 showing 'bridge strip'
are at V3.2.1, the S/A Strip is at V3.1.

Using DECelms on V3.2.1 I also get the Bridge Strip value. Using DECmcc
and the ELM modules an undocumneted value, 'Frame Content Independent', is
returned. Looking at the DECelms manual it would appear that Bridge Strip
mode should only be seen on a bridge. The DECmcc concentrator use manual
indicates that only S/A mode is valid.

The customeris getting this information via the OBM port. I would have
entered this in the FDDI ndes file, but MOUSE has been unreachable for
several days and then there is the fact that MCC is not reporting it
correctly either.

Any Ideas out there?

This behaviour is documented in FDDI conference ( I don't know why it
is unavailable ... ) as a change between version 3.1 and 3.2 concerning
	the Ring Purger.

The Frame Strip Mode deals with the way to remove frames from the ring.
	1/ Source Address :
	   Source Address = Device Address
==> This device is in charge of this frame removal.

	2/ Frame Content Independent :
Concerns the authorization for a device ( Ring Purger characteristic
enabled ) to remove frames with a source address different from its
	   MAC address.

	So to summarize :
		until 3.1 :
Frame Strip Mode = SA Match ( ELM and ELMS )
		since 3.2 :
Frame Strip Mode = Bridge Strip ( ELMS )
Frame Strip Mode = Frame Content Independent ( ELM )

As far as I remember, this is not documented in the release notes.

	Guy.
