5246.0. "DECmcc and Multiple Users" by MANWRK::KEEN () Wed Jun 23 1993 11:45

Hi,

I have read previous notes on multiple concurrent users accessing DECmcc - but
have not come across anyone with a similar problem to mine.

Can anyone advise / help?

VMS v5.5-2
DECmcc v1.3
Local MIR

I am experiencing the following sequence of events...

On system startup a background process is run to enable all DECmcc alarms
in all domains.

User A subsequently logs on and invokes DECmcc.

Notification of alarms that are being "triggered" are displayed in User A's
notification window.

User A then goes to view the status of an alarm. The status of the alarm is
shown as "disabled" - even though the alarm is firing and notifications are
being displayed in the notification window.

Why is it that when a user views the status of the alarm, the alarm shows
as "disabled" (even though notifications of the alarm are being displayed)?

Is this considered "normal", and if so, why?

Another issue...

If two users are concurrently accessing DECmcc.

User A is monitoring domain X.

User B creates an alarm in domain X and enables it.

User A begins to receive notifications of the new alarm created by User B
and goes to view the characteristics of the alarm. When User A selects
the option View Rules in domain X he does not see any reference to the new
alarm that User B has created (even though he is receiving notifications
for that alarm).

Why?

Any help or guidance gladly appreciated.

Regards,

    John/Graham,

A detached (or separate) MCC process in which alarms are enabled for
specific domains will result in notification events being displayed in
the notification window of the Iconic Map. You will **NOT** be able
to get status or counter information on those enabled alarms via the
IMPM since there is no mechanism for communicating status of enabled
rules from one DECmcc process to another.

As far as notification is concerned, Alarm Rules in all domains are
reported in the notification window, regardless of whether or not you
    enabled them from your process.

All of this can be very confusing to users, and it is a not received
well. Several of us have requested that it be re-worked, but the
priority of this task has been reduced. Add your name to the list in
    EMF_REQ notes file.

My customers view the notification information to be something that is
the heart of their monitoring and troubleshooting. In their view, it
    is kludged.

I am in the process of trying to put together procedures for monitoring
alarm/event status for them to make life a bit easier.
