THE ALCATEL 4750 NETWORK MANAGEMENT CENTER
		==========================================

THE NMC Adds value to your network investment !

The Alcatel 4750 Network Management Center (NMC) is a powerful yet flexible
management system that enables you to configure, monitor and maintain your
telecommunications network.

It is unique, however, and soars past its competition because it also enables
you to manage you data network.

This means that you can manage your entire business communications network
using one application with a common, interactive screen environment and,
depending on the size and organisation of the network, potentially do
everything from one location.

Providing two products in one package is only one of many reasons why the
NMC is the most cost-effective way to ensure that your network provides fast,
efficient and reliable service.

As you will see, the NMC :

- is customized to reflect your network
- adjusts to meet your needs
- conforms to internationally defined standards for open systems
- supports integrated networks

Most of all, the NMC protects your network investment ! Wether you are a large
company or small, Alcatel knows that in these fluctuating economic times you
need to be certain that what you buy today will meet your needs both today
and tomorrow.

The NMC is designed to expand as your needs change and as network technology
continues to improve.

Can the NMC really save time and money ? Absolutely !

Here's just one example :

In any network bottlenecks can occur which slow down traffic. At the same
time, other resources may be available but not used.

The NMC makes it easy to identify and eliminate congestion by rerouting
traffic to take advantage of the unused capacity in other parts of the
system.

Thus, by taking full advantage of existing resources, the NMC can help you
avoid additional investments in equipment that may not be necessary.

THE NMC Special features and functions make it unique !

Display your network graphically !

A Motif/X Windows screen environment helps you visualize your network by
using :

- customized background maps
- icons to symbolize the network elements
- object-oriented user interfaces
- context-sensitive menus

Of course, the NMC also gives you all the standard benefits of X Windows
including the ability to :

- have many windows open at the same time.
- arrange the windows on the screen and move quickly and easily between them.
- monitor an operation running in one window while working on a task in
  another window.
- reduce a window to an icon.

The NMC maps : custom-made for you !

NMC maps, tailor-made to represent your network, enable you to see your entire
network at a glance, to monitor and manage it and then see the results of your
activity.

As you move from one map to the next you gradually move through the layers of
your network (called domains) from the general to the specific, performing
management tasks at any time on any element at any level.

The designs of the maps depend on your network structure and the way you
have chosen to view the system and organize th management tasks.

Configuration management : control the network and the way it functions !

Like most management systems, the NMC enables you to set or update the
parameters that define how the network hardware or software works.

In addition, however, the NMC maps enable you to maintain a complete overview
of the physical configuration of the network - the location arrangement,
connections and interconnections of all the equipment.

This includes elements, such as PTT lines, which you may not manage directly
but which are an important part of the total network picture.

A special "auto-topology" function enables you to easily update the maps
or create new ones.

All network elements are registered in the NMC and commands (SHOW, SET, TEST,
etc.) enable you to monitor and modify the configuration.

Performance management : maximize the potential of the network !

Using the NMC to monitor performance helps ensure an efficient and
cost-effective network.

You can, for example, analyze current or past time performance data to
determine if a problem is due to incorrect allocation of network resources,
incorrect configuration of the network or element, or a technical fault.

Depending on the type of information you are evaluating, performance data
can be listed, displayed in the form of a graph or table, or be feflected
by an alarm signal.

To examine peaks and valleys in performance, you can schedule checks to be made
automatically at regular, repeated intervals.

The NMC enables you to monitor real-time performance to see what is happening
now, this instant or past-time performance to analyze trends or generate
reports. (In fact, some report types are pre-defined to make life even easier.)

Fault and alarm management : prevent a minor problem from becoming a major
crisis !

Regardless of the size of your network or the care you take to manage and
maintain it, problems can occur.

In some cases a problem can be avoided by monitoring performance levels and
conducting preventive maintenance. The NMC has a convenient and complete
work order system to help plan and schedule such tasks in a way that
minimizes disruption to the network.

In many cases, however, problems or faults can't be predicted.

To ensure that you know when there is trouble, the NMC notifies you immediatly
of an abnormal condition by changing the color of the icons associated with
the network element.

The new color reflects the severity of the alarm (critical, major, minor, etc.)
according to the standards established by the ISO for OSI.

The NMC issues an alarm signal when a network element reports an alarm
condition that violates a rule you have defined.

In either case, the NMC enables you to :

	* use filters to determine which alarms are sent, accepted and
	  displayed

	* examine, diagnose and correct the problem

	* maintain a log of alarms that have occured

Accounting services : monitor and distribute network costs !

The NMC enables you to monitor the costs of using the services the network
provides and to produce reports (invoices for example) summarizing these
costs.

Although some reports are predefined in the NMC, you have the freedom and
flexibility to create report formats that meet your specific purposes.

Reports can be generated automatically according to schedules you define
and information from one report can be used as the basis for other reports.
For example, monthly reports can be used to generate an annual summary.

Cost information can be presented in the form of a table, histogram or pie
chart.

An archiving function enables you to save valuable storage space yet retain
important information for later use or retrieval.

Security : Relax and rest assured your system is safe !

A system of codes and passwords controls access to the NMC, to specific
functions and/or to data.

A security auditing feature enables you to monitor the use of the system
and system functions.

The NMC System architecture designed to meet your needs inside and ..........

Flexibility !
A single word that has guided every step of the NMC development effort
because Alcatel believes that :

* your network is unique !
No other business has exactly the same equipement organized in the same way.

* your business is dynamic !
Your network needs will change as your business changes and grows.

* your budget is limited !
Your need to get the most for your money without paying for "extras" you
  can't use or don't need.

The result is a modular design which ensures that the NMC can be tailormade
to meet your needs today... and tomorrow.

Plug in the modules you need !

Virtually any software that meets the standards for an open system can be
mixed, matched and managed by the NMC.

NETWORK MODULES - provide the link between the NMC and the network
elements (PBXs, workstations, printers, LAN managers, etc.).

FUNCTIONAL MODULES include the NMC-specific applications which
support the basic management tasks defined by the international
Standards Organization (ISO) for Open System Interconnection (OSI).

PRESENTATIONS MODULES control the style of the screen environment
and enable the NMC to give you a consistent, easy to use way of
	interacting with the system.

DATABASE ACCESS MODULES enable the NMC to receive, store and retrieve
different kinds of information such as real-time, past-time or
	historical data.

The kernel enables the modules to communicate with one another and exchange
information.

Although the kernel is the heart of the NMC, it has no operating system
dependency. This means that the kernel, and thus the NMC, can be easily
ported to other systems without affecting the modules themselves.

...............OUTSIDE TOO !

ORGANIZE THE NETWORK TO FIT YOUR MANAGEMENT STYLES !

Whether your network is small and contained within one building or large
and crossing international borders, you will use the NMC to plan, administer
and operate your network.

In some cases, these tasks will be performed by the same person ; in others,
they will be shared or completely separated.

In some cases, there will be only one NMC monitoring all network activities;
in others, specialized management centers may monitor specific network
elements.

In some cases, one NMC will be used to manage separate parts of the network;
in others, separate NMCs will be used or, in a combination of these two
strategies, one NMC may collect information filtered from other NMCs.

And finally, in some cases NMC will manage local network activity; in other
cases the management may be quite romote or at least physically removed from
the actual network element.

Although the options and alternatives are almost limitless, your Alcatel
distributor will work with you to plan and set up the NMC in a way that best
fits your corporate structure and meets your networking needs.

Once again, flexibility is the key to the NMC.

The NMC
WELCOME TO THE WIDE OPEN WORLD OF NETWORKS !

Meets - and exceeds - internationally defined standards for network management!

The NMC complies with CCITT and ISO requirements for management of the
network's:

	* Configuration

	* Performance (real and past-time)

	* Faults and alarms

	* Accounting services

	* Security

In addition, tools such as a work order system and technical directory, make
administrative and maintenance tasks easy to plan and perform.

The NMC is fully adapted to the TMN and OSI management standards which
include the CMISE.

It also conforms to industry standards, such as SNMP, for computer
communication.

The NMC incorporates POSIX and OSF technological standards for open systems
and portability.

Alcatel actively participates in international standards organizations (such
as the Open Software Foundation) to ensure that the NMC will always be
up-to-date... and so will you.

FACILITATES THE MANAGEMENT OF AN INTEGRATED NETWORK !

The NMC enables you to manage local or wide area networks (LANS or WANS)
having a multitude of network elements on a wide-variety of systems including:

	* The product range of Alcatel PBXs (A4300L, A2600, etc.)

	* TCP/IP networks with SNMP

	* IBM SNA networks via Net View or NetMaster

	* Decnet (for Node 4 and Node 5)

A modular internal architecture enables the NMC to support this vast array
of management protocols.

By isolating the network-specific protocols from the basic NMC functions,
the work you do and the way you do it remain the same regardless of the type of
network element or system.

Furthermore, a relatively simple "protocol converter" makes it easy, efficient
and cost-effective to add protocols for new network systems or elements as
they are developed or as they are introduced to your company.

Interesting. DEC France telecomm people will certainly be happy to
hear that they - at last - will be able improve the way they manage
their OPUS 4000 (sorry A4300L) network.

Now, a simple question: is this new A4750 NMC able to manage
    non-Alcatel objects ? ie voice-data multiplexors ? or X.25 packet
switches ? or DEC machines, routers, bridges ... ? In other words could
it be a super DECmcc platform ?

You can add any other AM existing in the marketplace.
Hence, you can add all the modules to manage DEC objects

And also FMs from DEC , TeMIP Alarm Handling FM, Event Log FM..

The AlCATEL A4750 is actually built on top of the POLYCENTER Network Manager200
(formerly called DECmcc BMS), and that means you get a lot of functionality for
network management as well, not only for PABX'es.

Alcatel in Norway who has the product management responsibility, is now looking
into building a version based on the POLYCENTER Framework, with addition of
Notification FM, Script AM (if it's still included in PF), and perhaps also the
Data Collector AM, if it's available as a separate module, or part of the PF.

This makes the product alot cheaper, and more sales for smaller PABX-networks,
like the ones we have in Norway.
