5205.1 | DECalert? | TOOK::MINTZ | Erik Mintz | Tue Jun 15 1993 17:14 | 4 |
| Last I knew, there was a DEC product called "DECalert" or something
like that. Perhaps someone else has a better pointer.

5205.2 | The ERICSONS pager (may be a prob with export to US) | HERON::PATEL_A | LoLo-AQIC-I82Q-B4IP, - LMF | Wed Jun 16 1993 03:44 | 9 |
| Hi Catherine -- hope the move has gone well
The ERICSON pager system (this is a facility paging system not
terestrial) was integrated into decmcc by ERICSON, you may car to
conntact Luc TIMMERMANS (heron::) for more details.
This system is a page and message type ....
be in touch soon Amrit

Re : .1
Thanks Erik, I found what I needed in the DECalert notesfile
COLRDO::DECALERT
Hi Amrit,
The move went well !
Thanks for your reply too, but the is an RFP for Alcatel,
and I doubt they would endorse one of their largest competitor's
product...
Bye

5205.4 | They are both trivial to connect to | RACER::dave | Ahh, but fortunately, I have the key to escape reality. | Wed Jun 16 1993 15:52 | 11 |
| Well, having hooked up to both paging systems (DECalert and Ericson's)
It is not really any issue. The "work" for E's system was the addition of
a single VPAGE call in the DCL command procedure. BTW, VMS only.....
Same goes for DECalert, One line call, do it from a VAX/VMS system.
I cant imagine a paging system that would be more difficult to interface to,
so the real issue is the user interface into setting up and controlling the
tables you want to define.
Ericson had none, DECalert allows you to name page groups and add/remove
people from the lists.

5205.5 | my 2 cents on DECalert | CSOADM::ROTH | Light fuse and retire quickly | Wed Jun 16 1993 18:34 | 27 |
| DECalert has a character limitation (64?) of how much text you can pass
to it via its system-to-system DCL level interface.
Also... I suggested a change to DECalert that, as far as I know, has
yet to be made- that is some sense about how many times to page someone.
Example: Network link goes down/up 10 times, for a total of 20 page
requests. If you send 20 page requests to DECalert, then it will beep
your pager *20 times* every 'n' minutes (pager is smoking and melting
on your belt!!). You then must dial into DECalrt and listen (i.e. wade
through) the 20 pages (via your touchtone pad) to get it to stop
beeping you.
I suggested in their notesfile that DECalert only dial your pager once
even if 20 pages were outstanding and the gist of the reply was that
*you* would have to externally maintain the logic to prevent 20 pages
from occuring.
I no longer use DECalert for paging (or anything else).
DECalert is A WHOLE LOT MORE than a paging system... somthing like
buying a car just to get a seat to sit in. Be sure to hold on to your
seat when you ask the price of it. No, they don't offer internal
organizations discounts either. You get to pay full customer price for
it.

5205.6 | So, what do we recommend... | TOSKI::HAYES | | Thu Jun 17 1993 12:07 | 13 |

Not very encouraging...
So what do you use for paging, has someone heard of another
third party paging system ?
Thanks
Catherine
