5193.0. "Cannot target SNMP * INTERFACE *" by CSOADM::ROTH (Light fuse and retire quickly) Fri Jun 11 1993 16:22
SSB V1.3, VMS V5.5, 32Meg, VS3100/76
Situation:
Cisco box sends traps with differing IP addresses- can trap with
address "A","B" or "C".
I have registered each of IP addresses as a separate SNMP entity.
On iconic map I have an SNMP box with numerous child entities as
well. Child entities are the interfaces on the box (SNMP foo INTERFACE x)
I want to use targeting so that traps from A, B or C interface 'x'
will be directed to SNMP foo INTERFACE 'x'.
Problem description:
In the notification window, I use Targeting --> Assign Target and get the
Assign Target window. I fill in the domain. I use MB3 (display choices) on
'Event Source' and then I double-click the event source of 'SNMP *' and I
get a list of 'MCC * Child classes'. I select the first one listed, which
is 'SNMP * Interface *'. So far so good.
If I skip ahead to 'Managed Object:' and 'Target Entity:' I use MB3
(display choices) and it allows me to select 'SNMP #1 Interface #2' in
each case. This too is goodness.
The problem is when I use MB3 (display choices) on 'Event name:'
I get a window 'Events Field Expansion' with the nasty message "!No
Events found"!! If I manually put in a valid event such as LinkDown, then
it gives a parse error.
The manuals show no examples of SNMP targeting, so they are no help.
How am I to accomplish what I need to do? Is this not similar
to trying to target NODE4 * CIRCUIT * events?
Thanks-
Lee Roth

5193.2 | are there really events defined under the interface subentity? | CHEEKO::DITMARS | Pete | Fri Jun 11 1993 18:15 | 28 |
| Unless there is an EVENT defined under the interface entity in
the dictionary, the targeting UI won't let you do what you're trying to
do.
Pardon my ignorance, but does the event actually come in under
SNMP x INTERFACE y? I'm looking at a vanilla SNMP dictionary (i.e. no
private MIBs loaded that I'm aware of) and I don't see any events
defined under interface. Please educate me on where traps (events)
get defined in the entity hierarchy.
Here's my advice:
1. display an example of the notification that you want to retarget
in a notification detail window
2. match the fields from that window up with the fields in the
assign target window. i.e. copy the "event source" and "event name"
fields from the notification detail window to the assign target
window. you can use the mouse! double-click on the field in the
detail window and then MB2 to quick-copy 'em into the appropriate field
in the assign target window. The "managed object" and "target
entity" fields is where you do the magic symbol subtitution stuff.
That approach usually works.
What we really need is a "targeting wizard" (a-la Excel's graph wizard)
built into the product.
:^)
Let me know how it goes (send mail for faster response).

5193.3 | a guess | CHEEKO::DITMARS | Pete | Fri Jun 11 1993 18:22 | 2 |
| Would those traps be coming in under SNMP * CISCO * INTERFACE * by
any chance?

|
Events are defined only under (SNMP *) and (SNMP * CISCO).
