VMS 5.5-2 RSM 2.4 DecMCC 1.2.3
A customer installed RSM 2.4 onto a system that had dec mcc 1.2.3 on already.
This results in the following error when he tried to start the mcc interface
$manage/enter
The MCC product is not installed on your system.
Please contact your Digitial Sales Representative for more information.
The dec mcc release notes specify a work around for this problem. They suggest
that you reinstall the command verb into the DCLTABLES by using the
MCC_COMMANDS.CLD file. However this doesn't completely fix the problem since
RSM 2.4 replaces the images mcc_main and mcc_dap_main.
If these images are replaced from the dec mcc kit the manage/enter command
will work again.
I believe that it is recommended to install RSM before MCC but why does RSM
provide a version of mcc_main and mcc_dap_main? I imagine that if installed the
otherway round all would be ok because the mcc_commands.cld includes all the
definitions for the rsm qualifiers of manage aswell.
The RSM v2.4 release notes section 5.5 say that a Decmcc v1.2 interoperability
problem has been fixed. It says "Installation of version 2.3 server over decmcc
1.2 removed certain *rarely* used command qualifiers." * - my emphasis
It seems that the v2.4 server removes the more regularly used qualifiers :-)

the RSM should be checking the Image ident to see if it should place the images on the system. Or more simply, if the images are on the system, do not ever overwrite them. They are either the small images that display text or actuall DECmcc images. Larry G.

Hi, The problem of getting problems when installing RSM over DECmcc is mentioned in the DECmcc release notes. They should (as to my knowledge) provide a solution. Consider configuration -> Read documentation -> Install product -> Enjoy (Some- times :-). Greetings, Josch

The Release notes for Mcc 1.2.3 provide a workaround that redefines the
command verb for the manage command. This does not fix the problem
since the rsm v2.4 cld includes all the mcc qualifiers anyway.
The problem is caused by a dummy image being put in place on the system
that overwrites mcc images. RSM should check if mcc is installed before
overwriting those images but the kitinstal doesn't.
The images affected are...
mcc_main.exe
mcc_dap_main.exe
mcc_hfb_main.exe
mcc_msl_main.exe
mcc_msl_symbol.exe
mcc_msl_symbol_parse.exe
mcc_dap_browser.exe
mcc_tcpip_mtu.exe
It is easily fixed by either restoring those files affected from backup
or installation kit. If the option not to purge files replaced by this
installation is taken then the originals should still be there.
