5137.0. "Monitor Ethernet errors ???" by MQOSWS::S_CHARBONNEA () Wed Jun 02 1993 16:33

    HI,

I have a customer with an Ethernet network based around CHIPCOM
concentrator. He is using DECmcc to monitor and troubleshoot problems.
    The problem is the following:
    - in the past 4 month, they had 2 networks problems that the DECmcc
    station did not discover.
    - They have been told by HP that they can do better and they want to
change their orientation for network management.

Could HP really do better network management than DECmcc?

How could we use DECmcc to discover if Ethernet traffic goes over
    a predetermined value?

Could we detect network errors with DECmcc ? How ?

Could we detect broadcast storm with DECmcc? How ?

If it is not DECnet could we do something?

Is it right to tell that if the network is congested we cannot
determine the cause of the problem with DECmcc?

They are using DECmcc 1.0, could the upgrade to DECmcc EMS 1.3 solve
    some problems.

Any help on how to do things with DECmcc without being forced to poll
all the variables on all the systems?

> Could HP really do better network management than DECmcc?

I doubt it. At least not without bundling in some network pods (i.e. their
LANprobe stuff) -- which is probably what you should be doing with DECmcc by
using something line TEC's Network Professor & NetPods on their LANs.

Like I said: use some network pods to monitor the health of the LAN from MCC.
MCC supports *any* RMON-compliant pods directly with the SNMP AM, plus you can
integate other 'non-standard' network monitor pods with other means (e.g.
application launch to pod-specific UI, etc).

> Could we detect network errors with DECmcc ? How ?

Examples: You can monitor some of the DECnet LINE counters and detect
contention problems (among other things). YOu can probably examine some of
the interface counters on SNMP objects around your network (Sorry. Don't know
which MIB variables are helpful on that...)

If you had the TEC NetPod and their AM installed (assuming VMS) you could
create alarm rules on any of the data returned by the POD AM.

	No.

V1.0???? WhoA! An upgrade would *certainly* be in line...

If you have management modules in you Chipcom concentrators (EMM modules), you
can work with the CHIPCOM privat MIB. You can get a lot of information about
the ethernetsegments connected tou your concentrators, via the EMM module and
the priv MIB. You can look to counters, setup alarmrules, catch CHICOM traps
and so on ......It realy works nice.

As in Re.1 recomended, you should update to V1.3. If you use V1.0 it's very
easy for HP to beat us. But if you use V1.3 they will "bite on granite".

Well, excuse my ignorance but what is the product we are mentionning in
    rep.1.

Are we reselling the Network Professor?

Where could I have information on this product?

Is the NETPOD AM a release product or a beta field test software?

Do we have a contact or a product manager for this product?

    Thanks in advance

5137.5Detecting broadcast storm via Chipcom HUBCUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentThu Jun 10 1993 17:1919
    Sylvain,

You can detect a broadcast storm on a Chipcom hub by looking at the
broadcast packets received. I believe I've published the exact MIB
variable somewhere in the notes file, but if you are really interested
I will dig it up for you.

The problem is that you need what amounts to a DELTA function in order
to do this. This is not available in the current release. Contact
product management to request a release date.

HP can provide this capability today.

You won't see multicast storms or high network utilization based on
other factors by just looking at broadcast storms, though. You need
something more comprehensive. Network pods or smart bridges are the
answer. HP OpenView won't do it.
