5119.0. "Where is MIB II" by ABACUS::BUKOWSKI () Thu May 27 1993 09:11

    Hello folks,

I am in the middle of field testing a gigaswitch; hence, I am
beginning to see how terrible the world is for advocating snmp (Unix
too.!). Anyway, now that I am forced to learn gibberish in a dozen
tounges, I am need some attribute definitions. I know the *mib.txt
in MCC_COMMON: has definitions within them, but I can not find MIB II.
I hear that I comes pre-installed as part of MCC v1.3, so maybe that
is why it is not in the directory. Can somebody give me a pointer to
the current version of MIB II?

    Thanks,
    Mike

You are right, its "wired in".

MIB II is hard-coded into the TCP/IP SNMP AM.

The basic SNMP entity model, as described in the TCP/IP SNMP AM Use Book,
reflects the AM's view of MIB II.

Descriptions of each attribute exist in MCC's OnLine Help (using the FCL
command HELP ENTITY SNMP should get you started). Note that descriptions
contained in vendor mibs get loaded into online help as well...

There are obvious MCC-specific additions to MIB II: ipReacability,
(storage of) Read|Write Community Name, Proxy Agent Address, and
(DECdns Full)Name.

ok. I guess I'll have to use the on line help., but I'd since I am
scanning many topics, couldn't I just get a copy of the MIB and use
my trusty old EDT search commands (its much faster than looking at
a MCC stopwatch). Sorry for the dig, but sometimes I just end up
using the fastest methods to get my job done.

Do I have to send the gatekeeper mail in request of MIB II, or can
I get it internally on line?

All the RFC's are available on gatekeeper.dec.com, not just the MIBs.
Get a copy of Marshel Rose's book on SNMP, and read it once (or twice),
then keep it on the shelf for reference. It also has a copy of the MIB's,
and will cover almost any question you could come up with. Interpetation,
however, is another issue. The hard core folks talk about this on

Thanks for the pointers and author. The book sounds like a great help.
