5090.0. "Managing HUbs and Proxy agents" by MEOC02::FINCH () Wed May 19 1993 22:19

I am trying to represent 6 Dechubs on MCC. These hubs are managed using
one decagent that is resident in one of the hubs. I would like to have
all the hubs on the map so that HUBWATCH can be launched when I select
any of these. HUBWATCH, if I am correct, will then take the community
string of the hub selected and default to that particular hub.

However I have a problem in doing this. From what I understand I should
register all the hubs that don't have the agent resident using the
proxy agent facility. However I can't get the proxy agent registration
to work and only get partial registration. Another person had the same
problem (see note 4625) and has had no response from engineering. They
have Qar'd it #174 and have still no response.

Please , if this is the right way to go with getting all the hubs on
the map and using hubwatch then I need to solve the problem with the
    proxy agent registration.

If someone knows another way to do it then please let me know.

    Thanks for any help,
    Jill

You will always get partial registration for proxy agents. That is
because the foreign devices do not have the internet address and
internet name as identifiers. However, regardless of the partial
registration, you should still be able to do all normal operations.
Let me know if you see anything to the contrary.

Unfortunately, due to other commitments, no one had the opportunity
to take a closer look at QAR #174. I will try to reproduce the
	problem on my system.

	Update:

I tried registering a proxy agent and realised what problem people
are facing. Proxy agents do not have all the identifiers, so they
are partially registered, although all operations can be done
successfully on them. Unfortunately, every time you click into an
entity, the iconic map brings up an informational message saying
that the entity is partially registered and should be re-registered.
This gives the impression that there is something wrong with the
registered entity, although everything works fine in reality.

The same problem is manifest when registering normal SNMP entities,
when the SNMP AM tries to filter supported mibs based on responses
from the agent. In some cases, the agent does not respond at all
to mibs not supported by it, thereby causing a partial registration.

Sometimes you may want to register an SNMP entity which may not have
an entry in the BIND server. The SNMP AM cannot look up an internet
name for this entity and you will get partial registration, since
all the identifiers are not present for the entity. In such cases
you will be able to do all normal operations on the entity, but
you will keep getting the annoying pop-up error messages.

Partial registration is normal for SNMP entities. So ignore those
iconic map messages (if you can).

They are too annoying to be ignored. Remebmer, you have to click away
each of them.

A possible solution could be to put the message in the message area of
the map window instead of popping up a separate window. I think this
could be implemented in a few minutes and would do the job.

BTW: POLYCENTER System Census Agent has the same problem. It gets
partially registered as NODE...

I absolutely agree with you. This sort of behaviour wasn't present
in V1.2 and , as far as I can remember, not even in T1.3.0 (the
initial field test kit). This must have been added really late in
	the game.

5090.5The rules just keep changing!!!!TOOK::LEMMONSat Jun 05 1993 13:3327
geez... sometimes you just can't win! I added the
partially registered message because quite a few people
were complaining that it would be nice to know.

Quite a few things do not work if the iconic map can't
translate the entity name to its alternate identifier
    (e.g., alarming will fail).

Now I am hearing that it is a "normal" for some entities to
    be partially registered!

I could put the message out to the status line but it will
not be as descriptive as the message box.

I could display the message box on the first time the user
looks into the entity and then always put it to the status box.

Of course there are other solutions but the more complex, the
less chance it will get in the MUP kit.

    Which do you prefer?

    Jim,

I like the idea of the status line better. Doesn't the status line
have a scroll bar? Can't you put the whole message there?

    Thanks,
    Dan

How does this solution grab you all:

A new toggle button is added to the Options Menu Map entry -

	Display Partial Registration Warning

Initially it is set to display partial registration warnings in the popup box,
just like in V1.3. However, if you toggle the button and then press ok or
apply, from then on in that session (or until changed) if you look into a
partially registered entity, a line is displayed in the status area -

<class instance> is partially registered. You may want to fully register it.

Also, like other customizable information, you can Save Current Settings and
then subsequent sessions can display the partial registration either in the
popup box or in the map status area.

Hope this helps!

Allowing users to customize their environment as much as possible is
goodness. Thanks for your suggestion. I think it will work well,
    Verna.

5090.9Has Display Partial Registration button made it?BWTEAL::W_MCGAWTue Jul 26 1994 17:1418
    Hi,

    RE: .7

Has this Display Partial Registration Warning button ever been
implemented? I have the following MCC_ICONIC_MAP_PM.EXE file (which
included other fixes) but it does not appear to have this built in.
