Collection AM Question ???
I have a customer that has *several* PDP11s that he wants to manage.
Some are running DECnet, and I assume I can get to them using NODE4
AMs. (I'm not at the site until next week)
They also have PDPs that are not running any network s/w and are not
physically attached to a wire. The only way they are accessed is by
RS232 ports and terminals... They have a console setup LA-type, maybe
an LA120.
They want to be able to fire an ALARM when a given PDP is unavailable
via the console/RS232 connection. My first *guess* is to write a
command procedure that will target the console and use the collection
AM to fire an ALARM if/when the PDP goes down.
Any ideas??? Please feel free to send mail to Mic KAOU15::M_GALVIN or
give a call, (613) 591-5064. I'll be at this site until Friday 5/21.
Thank you in advance. BTW, I was looking in the 1.3 documentation and
saw a nice command procedure that might suit my needs. I'm just a
little confused how to simulate hitting the *CR* on the LA120 in the
program.

TERMINAL_SERVER AM ???
I've found out that there is also terminal access to the PDPs via
terminal servers. Is there a way to write an ALARM rule using the TSAM
to do what .0 asks? thanks in advance.

TSAM is not the way to go here. 1.) A script AM set of scripts could do what you desire without too much work. 2.) VCS could be used to watch any number of console lines and might be able to offer even more interesting types of alarms that what is/is not available. (remember that VCS has a "magical" wire that goes between the system and terminal. 3.) A "small command procedure" and the Data Collector will certianly work. This would be like "half" of 1. e.g. only an alarm, no real info returned. | |||||
| 5081.3 | They don't want to use VCS | KAOU15::M_GALVIN | Mic, (613) 591-5064 | Tue May 18 1993 19:28 | 12 |
Dave,
thanks for the prompt reply... I want to explore the Collector AM with
a command procedure scenerio... My concern is how to *simulate* the
connection through the terminal server... VCS is out. They don't like
what they've seen (not sure what they've done for alarming). Is there
someone in MCCland that's written something I can look at?
thanks in advance.
