5057.0. "How to handle alarms and notifications ?" by BACHUS::VANDENBERGHE () Thu May 13 1993 11:30

	Hi,

I have a few questions about Notifications Handling.

Imagin a Network with very bad lines (Real PTT lines) connecting
        different nodes in different areas.
I (a customer) am interrested to know:

	1. The current reachability status of the remote nodes or areas.
	2. To have statistical information about the uptime of the line(s) or
           the nodes reachability.
	3. To limit the massive notification information in the notification
           window.

	What I can do is:
	----------------
	1. Enable events on the area routers (like Circuit down/up,
Node reachability change, Adjacency down/up, Area reachability
change for a Node4 Entity) to be sinked to the MCC director.
Of course the notification are enabled for these events.
I will also Target the notification to the relevant entities.

What I don't want to do is:
	---------------------------
Create a rule to poll each entity

What I will see or do is:
        ------------------------
	1. The actual node status by displaying the notification at the level
           of the relevant entity Icons.
	2. Hundred of notifictations comming from several nodes in the
	   Notification window.
	3. To save all the notification in a log file.

What I would like to have is:
	=============================
	1. A reporting FACILITY which will build me a report for a given Entity
about its reachability or uptime (from the ASCII !!! LOG file) using
the time stamp of the events.

	2. An intelligent way to clear the notifications and alarms in the
notification window by leaving only the last one for a specific
entity (In order to leave an accurate display).
This means that the filter option can also be used as a PURGE
option (interactivelly or automatically) and keep the full
	   information in the log file.
This to avoid the clerical operation of aknowledging the notification
           interactivelly.

Is it now or in the future a mechanism in DECmcc (Asset, application
etc.) which will give me the possibility to perform the requirement.

By the way this is a actual customer situation/requirement.

	Thanks in advance,
	Robert
